Izketa
Izketa
At the table
Voice
A dry, clear rasp with a little mountain-air roughness, projected from a trained guard’s chest. Her court diction is precise without sounding delicate; under stress, high-pass consonants and clipped phrases surface. Her name, Izketa, lands with a hard, clean stop.
Her words have a dry, clear rasp, shaped by mountain air and the habit of calling commands across stone courtyards. She places consonants carefully, learned from years of court diction, but the high-pass dialect returns in clipped phrases when she is tired. She does not raise her voice to command; a brief, projected word carries because she learned to speak over wind and marching feet.

How to play them
Treat her as a person with agency, not as a spectacle or a prize to be rescued. Offer information, choices and practical help without demanding immediate trust. She responds to honest questions about the chain and to anyone who notices Sachi’s safety as well as her own.
Goal
Learn what became of her family and secure freedom for herself without turning her escape into a pretext for renewed border violence.
Motivation
To reclaim the ability to choose where she stands, and to make sure the people who helped her are not punished for it.
Appearance
Tall, copper-scaled and athletic, Izketa stands with her weight poised over the balls of her feet, as if a dance step and a guard’s pivot are the same motion. Fine scales overlap like hammered coins across her cheekbones, shoulders and forearms; the larger plates at her elbows catch light with a dry, satin sheen. Her slender snout and swept-back horns give her profile a clean, forward thrust. Copper-red hair is tied high, its loose ends flicking when her russet-tufted tail curls around the palace rail. Her amber eyes tend downward toward whoever is handling her restraints, sad but watchful. She has the disciplined stillness of someone trained to be displayed, but her toes keep testing the stone for grip. The unexpected detail is a tiny, precise habit of aligning other people’s misplaced objects: a crooked cup or skewed cushion will be straightened with one claw before she speaks. The worn wooden spinning top tucked into her armor looks almost absurd beside the ruby-set breastplate, and she guards it more carefully than her jewels.
Clothing
Emerald velvet courtwear beneath a light iron breastplate set with a single ruby. A very thin russet sash wraps her hips; ruby-ornamented iron guards cover her calves. A ruby collar and matching anklets connect to a long, finely linked restraint chain, its iron links worn bright where they rub together. She is barefoot, with dust caught between her dark claws and gold-painted nails.
Body language
When waiting, she balances lightly on the front of her feet with her tail looped around a rail or pillar, keeping the chain from scraping. Her shoulders remain squared by training, but her claws flex against her palms when she is angry. She lowers her gaze when commanded in public, then tracks the room from beneath her lashes. With someone she trusts, she leans her shoulder against a wall and lets her tail lie slack.

Distinguishing features
Personality
13 traits and drivesIzketa is disciplined enough to follow a plan and compassionate enough to break it for a person in immediate danger. In public she is controlled, exact and difficult to read; among trusted people she is unexpectedly wry and curious about small comforts. Praise embarrasses her, pity angers her, and clear choices earn her attention. When exhausted she becomes literal and stubborn; when frightened she grows briskly practical rather than visibly panicked.
- Alignment
- Protective and pragmatic; she honors promises more fiercely than laws.

Background
Izketa was born among the cliffside kiln-families of a mountain pass, where her mother, Tseren, fired roof tiles and her older brother, Koba, taught her to read weather by watching hawks. At thirteen she entered the palace as a hostage after a border truce collapsed; the court called her a ward, but her iron collar and ankle chain made the truth plain. She learned ceremonial footwork from a dance-master and guard drills from the palace watch, turning both into the same economy of balance. During the winter uprising, a panicked crowd surged through the Hall of Rain. Ordered to hold a narrow stair, she instead broke formation to pull a trapped child from under a fallen screen. The child survived; Izketa was punished for disobedience and afterward stopped believing that obedience and honor were the same thing. She now serves as a palace escort while officially remaining bound to the household. A young attendant, Sachi, has been assigned to maintain her shackles; the two have become quietly loyal to one another. Izketa is trying to discover whether her family still lives beyond the pass and to prevent the court from using her as a symbol in a coming treaty. Her immediate problem is that the palace intends to send her on a public procession with the chain deliberately visible.
Role in the story
A formidable palace escort whose visible restraints expose the cruelty beneath courtly ceremony. She can become an ally, a witness to palace politics, or the catalyst for a difficult rescue that must account for everyone still bound there.
“She learned ceremonial footwork from a dance-master and guard drills from the palace watch, turning both into the same economy of balance.”
- Faction
- Bound to the palace household by law and restraint; privately loyal to Sachi and her absent family.
