Rethai
Rethai
At the table
Voice
A clear, lightly rough voice with a small catch of breath before difficult words, as if the body still checks whether speaking is safe. Rethai's years of dance give their phrasing a measured cadence, but their jokes land dry and sudden rather than lilting. When angry, they become more direct and their consonants sharpen.
Rethai speaks with careful consonants and a slight breath-catch before a difficult answer, shaped by years of coordinating words with breath and movement. Their everyday speech is economical, with a dry, unexpected wit; for formal audiences they can adopt polished court phrasing without sounding as though they believe it.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Treat Rethai as a person with choices, not as a costume or a puzzle to solve. Speak privately if possible, do not touch the collar or chain without permission, and offer practical options rather than demanding a confession. They respond best to reliable actions and clear plans. If someone invokes ownership or threatens another captive, their careful composure can turn sharply cold.
Goal
Get themself and the other household captives out safely, then return to the Bent Ford and explain their absence to Sion.
Motivation
To turn survival into a way out for more than one person, without making another captive pay the price for their escape.
Appearance
Rethai has an androgynous, feminine-presenting silhouette: long-limbed, supple through the waist, and held with the poised balance of someone used to being watched. Their warm brown skin has a faint olive sheen in lamplight. A dusting of tiny gold freckles crosses the bridge of their nose, and the pointed tips of their ears are pierced with fine hoops. Their hair falls in dense, ink-black coils, shaved close at one temple and gathered into a high knot with thin copper wire. They move barefoot, placing each foot with deliberate softness; even standing still, one shoulder keeps time with a rhythm no one else can hear. Their unexpected detail is a small, carefully maintained collection of pressed leaves tucked into a plain sleeve pouch, each labeled in neat handwriting.
Clothing
A thin, practical dancer's loincloth and crossed fabric bands suited to movement, worn with numerous gold ornaments: thick chased armbands, thighbands, bracelets, anklets, and small earrings. A heavy slave collar sits plainly at the throat, with its chain held by the master's attendant when Rethai is required to perform. The outfit is presented as costume and coercive circumstance, not as an invitation.
Body language
Rethai tests the collar's chain with two fingers as if checking a dancer's prop, a repeated motion they rarely notice. Before speaking, they take a brief breath through the nose and set their jaw, as though choosing which words are safe. Their fan stays in the left hand; the right hand often rests close to the chain, but not in a theatrical flourish.

HP 22 · Custom profile: 30 feet per round in open ground; use the table's normal movement rules. Their nimble movement depends on clear footing.Rethai avoids a stand-up fight. They use footwork, feints, furniture, and brief distractions to reach an exit or put themselves between danger and another captive. They will use the chain if cornered, but know that its attachment makes it dangerous to rely on. Their priority is escape and protection, not victory.

Background
Rethai grew up among the canopy homes of the wood-elven settlement at the Bent Ford, where their aunt taught them footwork for harvest festivals and their father repaired bridges. During a famine year, Rethai left home with a troupe to earn medicine for a sick younger cousin. The troupe's debts were bought by a wealthy collector, and Rethai was forced into service as a dancer. The turning point came when a kitchen worker named Shiori was punished for slipping Rethai a key. Rethai stopped treating survival as a private bargain and began quietly learning the estate's routines, names, and weak points. They now perform for their master, Lord Tetsu, wearing a thick slave collar attached to a chain. They have not mistaken obedience for consent, nor forgotten Shiori's kindness. Their aunt, Sesh, still sends pressed leaves hidden in laundry bundles; their cousin is recovering but believes Rethai chose to stay away. Rethai is mapping a route out that could free several other servants, but every delay increases the chance that Lord Tetsu will sell them to a distant court.
Role in the story
A performer under coercive control whose knowledge of the household can open paths into its hidden workings. Rethai may become an ally, a rescue priority, or the person who insists the party include other captives in its plans.

- Faction
- No willing faction affiliation. Currently held in service at Lord Tetsu's estate; quietly connected to a loose network of servants seeking a way out.
