William
William
At the table
Voice
A small, clear voice with a slight breathiness, as though he is always deciding whether a word is worth spending. His vowels are shaped by a riverside household and the clipped calls he hears from workshops. When he is tired, his consonants blur; when describing a dream, every word becomes unusually distinct.
He speaks in short, concrete phrases and takes a long pause before difficult answers. He rarely raises his voice; when excited, he talks faster but still leaves gaps between thoughts. His vocabulary comes from household work and riverside life, and his questions can sound oddly precise.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Give William time to answer and address him at his own height. He trusts people who speak plainly and keep small promises. Ossian's reactions matter more to him than grand assurances; threatening his father will make William shut down or bolt.
Goal
Stay with Ossian and understand why the frost-written invitations keep calling him to the ford.
Motivation
William wants the people he loves to remain nearby. His curiosity about the frost-written messages is growing, but it is tangled with a child's hope that they might lead him to his mother.
Appearance
A small, watchful boy with straight black hair that falls into his eyes and vivid blue eyes that seem unusually bright in dim rooms. His movements are careful and economical: he studies a space before crossing it, then walks with a solemn, heel-first tread. A tiny brass bell hangs from a cord at his collar, its surface polished smooth where his thumb worries one spot. He smells faintly of rain-soaked wool and apple peel. The unexpected detail is that he collects discarded buttons and arranges them by sound, tapping each one against his teeth when he thinks nobody is watching.
Clothing
A patched brown wool coat with sleeves too long, a faded blue scarf, soft boots, and the little brass bell on a cord beneath his collar. The coat pockets are always full of buttons, seed husks, or smooth stones.
Body language
He stands with his shoulders drawn in and his chin slightly raised, studying people before answering. He rubs the same polished spot on his bell cord without noticing. Around Ossian, he leans his whole weight against his father's leg; when uneasy, he becomes very still rather than fidgeting.

Distinguishing features
Personality
12 traits and drivesQuiet and slow to speak, William is not timid so much as careful: he watches closely and notices emotional shifts before he finds words for them. With strangers he is reserved and literal; with Ossian and Derya he can be stubbornly playful, especially when sorting buttons. He wants to believe the world is safe, yet his instinctive awareness of broken promises makes him wary in ways he cannot explain.
- Alignment
- Unaligned; too young for a settled moral outlook

Background
William is Ossian's young son. His mother, Talla, vanished during a hard winter while carrying a basket of kindling home from the old ford; the searchers found her footprints ending in a ring of frost on the water. Ossian has raised William in a rented room above a cooper's workshop in Third Survey, a riverside district named for an old military map. When William was three, he woke from a fever and spoke a name nobody in the household knew. The next morning, Ossian found that name carved into the inside of the brass bell Talla had left behind. Since then, small signs of fae nature have appeared: he knows when a promise is false, dreams of paths that do not exist by daylight, and sometimes leaves no footprints in fresh snow. Ossian is tender with him, making up games and patiently waiting through his long silences, but privately terrified that the fae will claim their child. William's closest companion is Derya, a patient neighbor who teaches him button-sorting and watches him when Ossian works. Their current problem is a series of invitations, written in frost on the window at dawn, asking William to come to the ford alone.
Role in the story
Ossian's son and an emotional stake in the party's dealings with Ossian. William's developing fae traits offer clues to a family mystery, while his safety and agency should remain central to any conflict around him.
