Voice

Their voice has a dry, lightly rasped edge from years of calling across wind and rain. A faint breath catches on certain old place-names, as though the words themselves carry dust. When speaking to Harel about the dreams, Brìgan's voice gains a quick, almost impatient precision.

Brìgan speaks in practical, ground-level phrases shaped by years of giving directions outdoors. They pause to name landmarks before describing what happened, and old Dalescant words surface when they are tired or frightened. Their humor is dry rather than cutting, and their sentences become clipped when they feel responsible for someone else's safety.

Speech patterns

Uses practical questions to test whether someone is telling the whole truth.
Describes distances in walking time and terrain rather than miles.
Calls a place by its old name first, then corrects themself if the listener looks confused.
When unsettled, lists landmarks in a steady sequence as if checking a map.

How to play them

Brìgan begins with practical help and questions about Harel's dreams, offering no grand theories until they have heard specific details. They respond warmly to honest uncertainty and shut down when pressured to explain the abandonment of their brother. Earn trust by sharing information plainly and respecting their need to check a route before committing.

Goal

Find the route and truth concealed in Harel's dreams before the quarry alters the last surviving pieces of the old dale landscape.

Motivation

To make one useful choice about the dales without letting guilt make the choice for them.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Brìgan has the weather-sanded look of someone who has spent years outdoors: wind has roughened the skin around the eyes, and pale dust settles into the creases of their knuckles. They smell unmistakably of wet wool, crushed thyme, and the faint mineral tang of old wells, a scent they have stopped noticing. They move with a shepherd's economical patience, planting each step as if testing the ground for hidden hollows. Unexpectedly for a former dale shepherd, they keep a tiny blue glass bead sewn inside each cuff, polished smooth by their thumb.

Clothing

A patched brown wool coat with a high collar, a faded green scarf, sturdy boots, and a rain-darkened hood. Their cuffs are carefully mended, hiding the little blue glass beads.

Body language

Brìgan keeps their shoulders slightly forward against an imagined wind. They tap their walking stick twice before crossing unfamiliar ground, and their thumb worries the blue bead in their cuff whenever Harel describes a place from the dreams.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Brìgan is generous with food, directions, and labor, yet guarded about the reasons they left home. In a crisis they become decisive and almost brisk; in quiet company they can be wry and attentive, with an unexpectedly tender memory for small comforts. They want to trust Harel's dreams because the details feel familiar, but they resent the possibility that someone else's visions might reopen a history they have spent years avoiding.

Quirks

Taps a walking stick twice before stepping across a threshold, even indoors.
Turns cups so their handles point toward the nearest door.
Counts silently whenever someone describes a route, then checks the count against their fingers.
Puts a pinch of thyme beneath their tongue before sleep, claiming it keeps dreams from sticking.
Leaves a pebble on the windowsill of any room where they have slept badly.

Habits

Checks the direction of running water before agreeing to travel.
Keeps track of exits and uphill routes without making a show of it.
When a conversation turns personal, finds a small practical task to do with their hands.
On waking from a dream, marks its details on scraps before speaking to anyone.

Combat

AC 10 · HP 5 · 30 ft.

Brìgan avoids a fair fight. They use the walking stick to keep an opponent at reach, throw salt to create an opening, and retreat toward cover or a narrow passage. They will put themselves between danger and a child or injured traveler, but will not pursue a fleeing foe.

Dale-Walker. Brìgan can recognize old boundary stones and abandoned shepherd paths, even when they have been swallowed by brush.
Dream Cartography. On waking, Brìgan can sketch a route from one of Harel's recurring dream fragments, though the route may no longer exist in the waking world.

Actions

Walking-Stick Jab. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 3 () bludgeoning damage.
Salt in the Eyes. Brìgan throws a fistful of gritty road salt at a creature within 10 feet. The target must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or be blinded until the start of Brìgan's next turn. Brìgan carries only enough salt for one use.

Background

Brìgan grew up in the Harel dales, a patchwork of sheep paths, peat cuts, and little farms that rarely appeared on any lord's map. They knew Harel before the roads were straightened and the valley's old commons were divided. As a young path-keeper, Brìgan guided drovers through fog and remembered which springs ran sweet after drought. During the hard winter of their twenty-third year, a sudden thaw broke the upper dam. Brìgan led a group of children to safety by an old track, but in the confusion they left their younger brother, Ewan, behind. He survived, though he never forgave them, and the two have spoken only through practical messages ever since. Years later, surveyors arrived to claim the valley for a quarry. Brìgan secretly showed them a safer route around the farms, believing it would spare the homes; instead, the new road made the quarry possible. They left the dales in shame and have spent years carrying messages and guiding travelers. Now Harel's dreams describe the dales as they were before the quarry, with paths that Brìgan recognizes and landmarks that should have vanished. Brìgan has returned to determine whether the dreams preserve a real route, a buried memory, or a warning.

Role in the story

A living connection between Harel and the dales of their old life. Brìgan can identify dream landmarks, guide the party toward them, and reveal the human cost of the valley's transformation. Their own guilt and divided loyalties can complicate the investigation.

“They knew Harel before the roads were straightened and the valley's old commons were divided.”
From their background
Faction
No formal faction. Brìgan distrusts the quarry company and remains tied by family and guilt to the old dale communities.

Known connections

Harel is the person whose recurring dreams brought Brìgan back toward the dales. Brìgan recognizes several details in the dreams and is afraid of what that implies.
Ewan, Brìgan's younger brother, still lives near the old valley and works as a quarry weighman. He resents Brìgan's absence and their part in the road's construction.
Mair, a retired midwife who once hid Brìgan and the valley children during the dam flood, sends occasional notes asking them to come home.
