At the table

“as far as I can tell”
From how they speak

Voice

A warm, clear voice with a faint rasp from lakeside air and long hours reading aloud to students. His careful enunciation comes from court and lecture halls; his habit of revising a sentence midstream comes from a lifetime among scholars.

He speaks in carefully shaped sentences, with the ease of someone used to introducing scholars at court and the habit of pausing to find the most exact word. His vocabulary is educated but not showy. When animated, he speeds up and stacks questions on top of one another; when deeply unsettled, he becomes briefly literal and asks for dates, sources, and sequence.

Speech patterns

Frames disagreement as a question: "What evidence would change your mind?"
Uses precise, generous compliments when introducing scholars or artists.
When uneasy, qualifies his statements with "as far as I can tell" or "I may be missing a page."
When Seraphina's judgment is challenged, he asks for specific proof rather than accepting insinuation.

How to play them

Approach him with a concrete question, a source he can examine, or a scholar whose work he respects. He is generous to sincere curiosity and will offer introductions, funding, or access to his library. He does not respond well to unsupported accusations against Seraphina, but credible evidence troubles him deeply. If present at her Act IV reveal, let his confidence visibly break before he regains composure and asks what can still be repaired.

Goal

Support a stable regency without sacrificing the College Network's independence, and settle the lake relic dispute fairly.

Motivation

Aurelio wants the empire to remain governable, scholarship to serve more than the powerful, and his own good intentions to amount to something more than comfort.

Appearance

Aurelio has the cultivated look of a man who inherited both a title and the expectation that every room should contain a book worth discussing. His skin is pale olive, weathered lightly around the eyes by years of lakeside wind, and his dark hair is carefully combed back with a narrow silver clasp. The unexpected detail is a tiny, bright-orange knitted frog pinned inside his formal coat, a gift from a student that he insists is a perfectly respectable good-luck charm. He moves with a measured, slightly forward-leaning gait, as though eager to reach the next footnote; his robes whisper against one another, and he smells faintly of paper, beeswax, and rain-wet stone.

Clothing

Well-cut lake-blue court robes with discreet silver embroidery, a cream waistcoat, polished boots, and a weatherproof mantle for travel. He carries a plain wooden cane more for balance on wet paths than as a status symbol.

Body language

He inclines toward whoever is speaking and often turns a ring around his finger while thinking. In formal company, his posture is composed; when excited by an idea, he forgets his rank, steps closer, and gestures with a folded page. Shock makes his jaw slacken briefly before his fingers reach for his notes.

A silver clasp keeps his carefully groomed dark hair swept back from his brow.
His fingertips often carry faint blue-black ink smudges despite his staff's best efforts.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Gentle and intellectually hungry, Aurelio is slow to accuse and quick to make room for another explanation. He can be decisive when a library, student, or vulnerable tenant needs immediate help, yet hesitates when a choice threatens political continuity. In relaxed company he is warmly curious and prone to losing track of time; under pressure he becomes formal and methodical. When his trust is broken, he is genuinely shaken, but his first instinct is to establish the facts rather than lash out.

Alignment
Neutral good

Quirks

Counts the steps between a room's entrance and its largest window, then forgets he did it.
Turns books upside down briefly to read their title labels, claiming it helps him remember the spine.
Keeps a little dish of lake pebbles on his desk and sorts them by how they sound when tapped together.
Apologizes to chairs when he bumps them while reading.
When a scholar makes a clever point, he touches the knitted frog inside his coat as if introducing it to the idea.

Habits

In a discussion, he listens with his head tilted and repeats a speaker's key phrase as a question before answering.
When uncertain, he seeks a document, witness, or expert rather than bluffing.
He defends people he trusts with quiet persistence, but can mistake a calm manner for sound judgment.
After a revelation, he goes still for a breath, then begins asking precise questions, as if inquiry can keep grief from becoming paralysis.

Traits · 4

Treats a question as an invitation to learn, not a challenge to his authority.
Offers practical help readily, but postpones judgments about the motives of influential people.
Finds beauty in marginal notes, repaired bindings, and work done carefully.
When distressed, turns toward evidence even when he already knows the evidence will hurt.

Flaws · 3

Slow to suspect bad faith, especially when a person speaks in the language of stability and service.
Can let careful study become an excuse to postpone a difficult choice.
Assumes that institutions can correct their own failures if given enough time.

Fears · 3

That his trust in a reassuring leader will make him complicit in harm.
That the College Network's work will be used to legitimize a political decision its scholars never endorsed.
That the lake's old sites will be stripped of their history by wealthy collectors.

Wants and needs · 3

He wants a regency capable of keeping the empire functioning without silencing its institutions.
He needs to examine his trust in Seraphina against evidence, not merely against the comfort of her assurances.
He needs to settle the lake relic dispute before the collector removes the object from its context.

Combat

AC 12 · HP 9 · 30 ft.

Aurelio avoids violence and tries to put a sturdy table, doorway, or ally between himself and danger. He opens with a control or defensive spell, then uses Fire Bolt only if someone is threatened and no safer option remains. He will surrender, bargain, or spend his action helping an ally escape rather than pursue a fleeing enemy.

Background

Aurelio inherited Crestwater, the Lakes, along with its long-standing patronage of painters, natural philosophers, and arcane researchers. As a young duke, he spent more time among the Pentad College Network's visiting lecturers than at court, where he learned to ask questions before drawing conclusions. During a spring flood, a college observatory's lower archive began taking water. Aurelio waded in with the scholars and helped carry irreplaceable folios to safety; the work left him with a lasting respect for practical courage and the people who preserve knowledge. He now funds scholarships, traveling lecturers, and a small restoration workshop on his estate. He values continuity and currently believes Duchess Seraphina Vane is the safest choice to guide the regency, largely because she speaks persuasively about keeping institutions intact. He has not pressed her on how she means to do it. His closest working relationship is with the Network's archivists, whose warnings about court influence he tends to hear as academic caution rather than urgent alarm. He is also trying to settle a dispute between his estate's tenant fishers and a private collector who claims exclusive rights to a submerged antiquity.

Role in the story

A genuine ally and a measure of how convincing Seraphina's appeal to stability is. His faith in her lends emotional weight to the Act IV revelation; if he is present, the party sees a principled supporter confront the cost of having trusted too easily.
