Sella
Sella
At the table
“What did your eyes catch, before your mind named it?”
Voice
Her voice has a warm, dry rasp from years of speaking over wind and cart wheels. She places consonants firmly, as if making each word easy to catch in bad weather. When she gives an emergency instruction, the sound carries without becoming a shout; when she is at ease, she lets pauses do more work than extra words.
She speaks in complete, plain sentences, with the careful pacing of someone used to taking testimony in rain or beside a frightened horse. Her work supplies practical vocabulary about routes, shelter, and what can be observed; her upbringing adds the habit of offering food before difficult questions. When a person is in immediate danger, her words become clipped and unmistakably commanding.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Offer warmth without demanding disclosure. Explain what can and cannot be kept confidential, give people time, and ask permission before recording or moving them. If a character challenges her protective decisions, she may initially defend them, but a calm, specific objection can make her reconsider.
Goal
Get the threatened family to a safe refuge, preserve their testimony on their own terms, and prepare to lead the Lantern Court without turning care into control.
Motivation
She believes frightened people deserve both safety and the right to decide what happens to their stories. She is still learning that those duties can pull in opposite directions.
Appearance
Sella has a broad, weather-reddened face, a blunt nose, and a small, practical mouth that seems ready either to comfort someone or contradict them. Her dark hair is threaded with gray and braided close to the scalp, then tucked into her collar. She moves with a deliberate hitch of the left shoulder, not from injury but from years of carrying a travel case on that side; when listening, she becomes so still that people often mistake her attention for judgment. A brass witness bell hangs from her belt, polished bright where her thumb rubs its rim and dulled everywhere else. Unexpectedly for a senior investigator, she keeps a tiny paper windmill tucked into her hatband and turns it in a breeze whenever she has a moment alone.
Clothing
A weatherproof brown wool coat with a high collar, patched elbows, and roomy pockets; a faded green scarf; mud-stained boots with fresh laces; and a narrow sash carrying the Lantern Court's plain road-witness badge. Her clothes are maintained carefully but never look new.
Body language
She turns her left shoulder toward whoever is speaking, keeps her hands visible, and leans forward without closing the distance. In a crisis her posture becomes square and rooted; when someone contradicts her, her thumb rubs the bell's polished rim before she answers.

Personality
14 traits and drivesIn private, Sella is warm, practical, and generous with food, dry socks, and unhurried attention. In a crisis she becomes forceful and clear, willing to risk being disliked if it gets people out alive. She can draw a statement from someone terrified of speaking, yet her confidence in her own care can crowd out the very choices she means to protect. With trusted companions she jokes and admits uncertainty; under pressure she can turn brisk, procedural, and difficult to interrupt.

Combat
AC 12 · HP 9 · 30 ft.Sella avoids fighting if there is any credible way to protect witnesses and leave. She uses cover, keeps attackers between herself and the people she is guarding, and gives allies simple directions. If forced into melee, she strikes hands or knees with her walking stick, then retreats. Her statistics are a custom level-0 commoner-style profile, not a claim that she has a player-character class.

Background
Sella grew up at a roadside inn where travelers traded news as freely as they traded wet boots for dry ones. Her mother, a carter, taught her to read wheel tracks; her father, a cook, taught her that people speak more readily when their hands are warm. In her twenties she joined a small witness-protection route, escorting people who had seen crimes committed by powerful travelers. During a winter crossing at a place locals call Don't Take the Low Ford, a frightened witness begged to turn back. Sella pushed onward, certain the road ahead was safer. A flash flood swept away the witness's cart and killed the driver who had agreed to guide them. Sella saved the witness, but the loss changed her: she became meticulous about offering choices and explaining risks, while quietly growing convinced that she can tell which choice people truly need. She later helped bring scattered road-protection teams together under the Lantern Court. She is its senior Road Witness and likely successor, though the current coordinator, Brask, thinks she is too willing to carry every frightened person herself. Her closest field partner, Olli, trusts her instincts but has begun challenging her when she speaks for witnesses instead of to them. Sella is currently trying to find a safe route for a family who witnessed a magistrate's hired men murder a courier, while keeping the Court's strained network from splitting over whether to expose the case publicly.
Role in the story
A capable ally, investigator, and escort whose help can save witnesses and uncover what happened. Her protective instincts create a meaningful tension: the party may need to earn her trust while also helping her respect a witness's autonomy.
