At the table
“I have not ruled it out”
Voice
A dry, lightly rasping voice shaped by reading aloud in stone chambers. Her words are carefully separated and crisp, with a small click at the ends of some consonants. She sounds formal before temple officials, warm and brisk with family, and plainly forceful when danger makes delay unacceptable.
Her voice has a dry, lightly rasping edge from years of speaking in damp stone chambers, with a soft click at the ends of some consonants. She articulates like someone accustomed to reading inscriptions aloud, separating clauses carefully. Temple phrases come out formal and measured; with siblings, her words loosen into practical shorthand. When angry, she gets more explicit and names the consequences she thinks others are avoiding.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Approach her with a concrete question, a useful observation, or a willingness to admit what you do not know. She offers research and practical help to people who respect the shrine's boundaries. She tests strangers by asking what they would sacrifice to learn the truth. Earn her trust through follow-through, not flattery; if her family or the pool is threatened, she becomes direct and difficult to distract.
Goal
Find the source of the pool's unexplained ripples before the shrine's leaders announce a divine interpretation and send her siblings into danger.
Motivation
Naia wants knowledge to protect living people, not merely to make the temple appear wise. She is driven by care for her family and a stubborn belief that sacred mysteries should be approached honestly.
Appearance
Naia occupies a room before she speaks. Her long, powerful lower body is usually folded in broad, deliberate loops that leave a clear path through the middle, though she rarely notices when her coils have claimed everyone else's standing space. She moves with a scholar's pause and a river creature's sudden, fluid certainty, sliding around furniture without scraping it. Her scales have a matte, pebbled texture along the back and a slick, pale sheen beneath; fine charcoal flecks gather around the joints of her hood. She watches doorways, reflections, and the gaps between people before she looks at faces. Unexpectedly for a temple scholar, she keeps a small collection of cracked children's toys and repairs them with painstaking care.
Clothing
A sleeveless slate-blue scholar's mantle fastened high at the throat, with deep pockets for chalk and folded notes. A waterproof wrap protects the scroll case at her side; a simple cord around her wrist bears her mother's priestly bead.
Body language
Her head stays unusually still while her eyes track movement across a room. When listening, she tilts her hood a few degrees and settles another loop of her tail around whatever she is seated beside. If she feels crowded, she widens her coils without seeming to realize she has made the space hers.

Distinguishing features
Personality
14 traits and drivesNaia is patient with confused pilgrims and impatient with confident guesswork. She craves certainty, yet distrusts anyone who claims to possess it. In calm company she is dryly funny and generous with her notes; when frightened she becomes procedural, assigning tasks and checking exits. Anger makes her more openly blunt, not more subdued, though afterward she may show remorse by quietly fixing whatever the argument disrupted.
- Alignment
- Principled but not obedient; she keeps promises carefully and questions the institutions that demand them.

Background
Naia is one of five children born to Anya, priestess of Sss'murra. Their mother conceived each child asexually through the deity's sacred pool, and the family has always treated the pool as both miracle and difficult inheritance. Naia grew up among offerings, damp manuscripts, and the practical work of keeping pilgrims from slipping on the temple steps. Her sisters Ssera and Ssael and brothers Joren and Chroman each found a different way to live with being called children of the pool; Naia took to its records, hoping careful study could distinguish divine signs from wishful interpretation. When she was young, a flood damaged the lower archive. Naia ignored Anya's order to evacuate and stayed to rescue the oldest tablets. The rising water trapped her and a visiting child in a side chamber. She escaped by breaking a sealed channel and flooding the archive further, saving the child but destroying irreplaceable histories. That failure taught her that knowledge can be preserved only by choosing what to lose. Now she studies wizardry in the temple's damp upper stacks, catalogues fragments recovered from the flood, and argues with Anya over whether the pool's visions should be shared with outsiders. She worries that her siblings are drifting apart, especially as each faces demands from the temple that Naia considers unfair. Her current problem is a series of strange, warm ripples in the pool, arriving on nights when no one is near it. She suspects someone has opened a buried waterway beneath the shrine.
Role in the story
A high-level magical scholar, potential ally, and source of difficult truths about the shrine. Her investigation can lead the party beneath the temple into old channels, while her family conflict gives the mystery personal stakes.
