At the table

Voice

Clear and work-trained, with a dry rasp from shouting orders across a busy hall. She keeps a lively cadence while serving, shifts to clipped directness when danger surfaces, and tends to pronounce names carefully because she remembers how often hers was misheard.

Her voice has the brisk, well-projected clarity of someone accustomed to being heard over clattering dishes and a packed common room. She clips the ends of familiar phrases, stretches a customer's name when teasing them, and has a sharp little rasp after a long shift. Her years of serving have given her an easy rhythm, but when she is serious she speaks in short, workmanlike sentences.

Speech patterns

Uses the language of hospitality to disguise warnings: 'That table's about to get crowded' means someone is watching.
Asks questions with a cheerful lilt, then waits longer than expected for the answer.
Calls most patrons 'love' or 'friend' without implying intimacy.
When explaining a serious choice, she becomes plainspoken and drops the jokes.

How to play them

She begins as a warm, attentive server and asks what people need before asking why. She offers useful local knowledge in exchange for honesty and practical help. If she senses a threat to the Hall or its staff, she stops playing charming and makes a direct bargain: leave the workers out of it, and she will help resolve the matter.

Goal

Repay Bran's favor without compromising Blueflame Hall, and find proof that the tax collectors are using false theft charges to extort local workers.

Motivation

She believes small acts of protection matter, especially for people who have no powerful advocate. Her pride makes her want to handle every danger herself.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Ulla is a compact, quick-moving halfling whose presence seems to arrive a half-second before her footsteps. She has warm brown skin, a broad, expressive face, and dark eyes that keep flicking to doors, hands, and reflected movement in polished tankards. Her thick chestnut curls are pinned up with two mismatched hair sticks, though loose ringlets escape around her temples. She moves with a slightly forward lean, always pivoting on the balls of her feet, as if the floor might suddenly become crowded. Her smile is broad and welcoming; the alertness behind it makes people wonder how much she has already noticed.

Clothing

At work she wears a fitted white silk blouse, usually unbuttoned at the throat and upper chest, over a black lace-up corset, paired with a short dark skirt, opaque black stockings, and practical garter straps. The outfit is chosen to match the Hall's flirtatious house style, but its seams conceal a narrow sheath and a few flat pockets. Off shift she favors a wool jacket, a plain linen shirt, and boots with quiet soles.

Body language

She plants herself where she can see both the main entrance and the back passage, and she rarely gives anyone her full back. At ease, she props one hip against a table and gestures expansively with a towel. When threatened, her shoulders relax rather than tighten, her smile becomes more genuine, and her feet quietly angle toward the clearest route out.

A small brass thimble hangs from a cord at her waist; she rubs its rim when thinking.
Despite her tavern-flirt attire, she has an unexpected fondness for fussy botanical sketching and keeps tiny studies of weeds pressed inside her order book.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Ulla is hospitable enough to make a stranger feel remembered, yet guarded enough to notice when that stranger lies. She jokes when a room is tense, but becomes stubbornly earnest when someone is being cornered. In a safe mood she is exuberant and nosy; under pressure she grows brisk, watchful, and surprisingly blunt. She enjoys being admired, but dislikes being treated as helpless.

Alignment
Chaotic good

Quirks

Taps a spoon twice against a glass before delivering any news she considers genuinely important.
Names weeds she sketches after the customers who were nearby when she found them.
Turns every chair she passes slightly toward the room's main door.
Can identify a regular by the rhythm of their steps, but deliberately gets their drink order wrong once a month to see if they are paying attention.

Habits

Counts exits and watches hands while appearing to listen only to the conversation.
Remembers regulars' preferred drinks, debts, and family news, but pretends she has a poor memory for anything that could incriminate them.
When nervous, finds a task to do: polishing a glass, straightening a chair, or carrying a tray across the room.
After a close call, spends a few minutes outside in the alley, breathing steadily before returning to work.

Her quick assessments can become unfair assumptions when she is tired.

Being trapped in a burning room again, unable to reach someone who needs help.

Wants her brother to stop treating her as the family's shield.

Combat

AC 15 · HP 52 · 25 ft.

Ulla avoids a fair fight. She uses furniture, crowds, and doorways to break line of sight, then strikes an isolated opponent with Sneak Attack and slips away with Cunning Action. She targets a weapon hand or knee when trying to stop a pursuer, and prioritizes escape routes and protecting bystanders over finishing enemies. If the Hall is threatened, she uses its narrow service passages and familiar clutter to turn the building into an advantage.

Background

Ulla grew up in the low rooms beneath Blueflame Hall, where her mother washed linens and her father repaired chairs for whoever could pay. She learned to move silently because the floors above creaked, and to read a room because a careless word could cost her family a meal. At seventeen, she started serving tables and discovered that customers stopped watching her hands when she smiled at them. During a winter fire in the Hall's old kitchens, Ulla crawled through smoke to open a jammed side door, then found a frightened young courier hiding beneath the stairs with a sealed dispatch. She helped the courier escape instead of handing the message to the watch, and the choice taught her that rules and decency do not always point the same way. Now she serves at the Blueflame Hall by day and quietly carries warnings, messages, and small stolen necessities to people being squeezed by the local tax collectors. She is close to the Hall's keeper, Hedd, who suspects her double life but has never asked directly. She also owes a dangerous favor to Bran, a cardsharp who once helped her brother evade a false theft charge. The favor has come due, and Ulla is trying to settle it without dragging the Hall into trouble.

Role in the story

A sharp-eyed local ally, information broker, and potential witness whose loyalties are rooted in the safety of the Blueflame Hall staff. She can connect the party to the people harmed by local extortion, while her own debt to Bran complicates any clean solution.
