Mílan Vardanes is a weathered, broad-shouldered man whose age shows in the deep folds beside his mouth and the stiffness he hides whenever he first rises from a chair. His close-cropped silver hair is dense and bristled like wire, with a dark band still visible above his ears. His face is square, dry-skinned, and sun-browned, with a heavy lower lip and a small notch missing from one front tooth. He carries his weight on the balls of his feet even when standing still, as though every pause is a battlefield pause. Within a minute of meeting him, most people notice that he repeatedly checks the leather strap around his left wrist, tightening it by a fraction each time. His hands are scarred by sword calluses, but his fingernails are meticulously clean. The unexpected contradiction is that his armor and weapons are maintained with severe precision while the rest of his appearance is plainly utilitarian, with patched socks, a fraying collar, and one carefully mended blue scarf tucked beneath his gorget.
