Mellia Vardos
Bard, College of Lore
Mellia Vardos
Species
Elf
Appearance
Mellia is a slender moon elf with the compact, slightly forward-leaning posture of someone forever protecting an instrument from doorframes and careless elbows. Her hands are the first thing people notice: long-fingered, callused at the fingertips, and marked by tiny pale dents from years of harp wire. She moves with a dancer's quiet precision, but when startled she turns abruptly and protectively, as if her harp were a child. Her face is fine-boned and calm, yet her eyebrows are unusually expressive, often conveying an entire argument before she speaks. She leaves behind an impression of warmth, rain-damp wool, and music heard through a half-open window. The unexpected contradiction is that her elegant, almost aristocratic features accompany the practical habits of a roadside peddler, including checking chair legs for stability before sitting and keeping emergency oats in every pocket.
“Her voice is low, musical, and carefully paced, with soft rounded vowels and occasional Hungarian and Greek-like inflections. She speaks gently even while delivering a threat, making dangerous promises sound like observations about the weather.”

Distinguishing Features
Her fingertips are visibly hardened and faintly silvered from years of harp wire, with tiny crescent marks along the pads.
She wears a single polished river pebble in her left ear instead of a traditional earring.
Her harp has one dark red string among otherwise pale strings, and she refuses to explain why it is never replaced.
She smiles warmly with her mouth but studies people's hands first, looking for work, fear, or hidden weapons.
A faint scent of juniper follows her because she oils the harp case with a family mixture made from juniper resin and beeswax.
Voice
“A mellow alto with a clear, bell-like upper register. In quiet conversation she sounds like someone telling a secret beside a hearth. When singing, her voice becomes broader and more commanding, with a trembling undertone that makes even cheerful songs feel as though they remember loss.”
Clothing
She wears a moss-green wool coat repaired with neat triangular patches of faded blue cloth, a cream blouse with sleeves rolled precisely to the wrist, dark travel trousers, and soft riding boots wrapped with red thread at the ankles. Her belt is plain and overused, but her harp case is lovingly polished blackwood with fresh brass hinges. One coat pocket is permanently stretched by carrying oats, chalk, and spare strings.
Body Language
When relaxed, Mellia rests one thumb against the harp's frame and rocks subtly with any nearby rhythm. When suspicious, she becomes very still except for one fingertip tapping a silent three-beat pattern. When afraid, she smiles too quickly, shifts her weight toward the nearest exit, and puts the harp between herself and the source of danger.
