Iorwen
At the table
“in private, but never jokes about another person”
Voice
Her voice has a dry, slightly rasped edge from years of calling instructions over clashing practice blades and palace kitchens. Before difficult answers, she draws a short breath through her nose that makes a faint sandpaper sound. Her consonants are clear and firm; warmth enters her voice through a slower pace and a little breathy amusement, not through a change in pitch.
She speaks in clipped, legible phrases shaped by guard drills and court etiquette. Her word choice is exact, especially when describing routes, distances, or who gave an order. With servants she uses ordinary names instead of titles. Her humor is dry and arrives after a brief pause, as if she has checked whether it is safe to laugh.
Speech patterns
How to play them
She responds best to people who address her as a person rather than as palace property. Do not demand that she prove her suffering. Offer specific help, explain risks honestly, and let her choose whether to accept. If a character threatens an attendant, she treats them as an immediate danger. She may test a party with a small, practical request before trusting them with the contract evidence.
Goal
Find documentary proof that her service contract was forged, secure her mother's safety, and win freedom for herself and the other bound attendants without leaving them exposed to retaliation.
Motivation
Freedom that does not require abandoning the people still trapped beside her
Appearance
A tall, athletic draconic woman whose bronze-copper scales catch light like hammered metal, most visible along her cheekbones, shoulders, and forearms. Her narrow, elegant snout and swept-back horns give her profile a forward-driving, alert look. Copper-red hair is bound high, though short wisps cling to her temples after a shift on guard. Amber eyes carry a tired, attentive sadness; they keep returning to whoever is kneeling near her ankle. She stands on the balls of her clawed feet, heels lifted, knees loose, as if the floor might become a dance stage or a battlefield without warning. Each foot has four forward digits and a shorter inner talon, with chipped gold paint on the blunt edges of her claws. Her long tail, russet-tufted at its end, curls around the palace rail with deliberate gentleness. The detailed ankle shackle is a close iron cuff lined with worn green leather, set with a small ruby whose underside has been filed nearly flat; a double swivel joins it to a short, heavy chain and a second chain-ring fixed to the guard post. Its bright ceremonial links are polished, but the inside of the cuff is scuffed and darkened from years of contact. She moves with a dancer's spring and a sentry's measured economy. The unexpected detail is that she keeps a tiny folded paper puppet tucked into her breastplate, a child's toy rather than a soldier's keepsake.
Clothing
Emerald velvet court jacket and fitted trousers beneath a light iron breastplate set with one ruby; a narrow russet sash, ruby-set iron calf guards, and ceremonial blue-green tattoos winding down her right arm. A ruby collar and ruby ankle ornaments are court insignia, not freely chosen finery. The left ankle bears the detailed iron cuff, leather lining, double swivel, short heavy chain, and post ring. Her feet are bare and dust-marked.
Body language
She waits balanced on the balls of her feet, weight forward but never visibly fidgeting. Her tail hooks a rail or curls around her own ankle when she needs to stay still. She watches hands first, faces second. Before speaking on a difficult matter, she draws one dry breath through her nose, a faint rasp from years of smoke-filled training halls.

Personality
14 traits and drivesIorwen is disciplined enough to make stillness look effortless, yet privately impatient with any rule that treats people as possessions. She is observant and wary with officials, warm and matter-of-fact with servants, and unexpectedly playful with children. Praise makes her uncomfortable, especially when it credits her for enduring abuse. Under stress she becomes brisk and tactical; when safe, she asks gentle questions and remembers small preferences. She wants to protect others but resents being praised for obedience, a conflict she has not resolved.
- Alignment
- Principled and compassionate, but increasingly willing to break unjust laws

HP 68 · 30 feet per round on level ground; custom Generic Fantasy benchmark, toe-walking does not reduce her paceShe controls a narrow approach, using her reach, springing footwork, and saber to keep attackers away from anyone behind her. She favors disarms, trips, and disengagement over killing when protecting attendants. If ordered to attack an innocent, she hesitates long enough to create an opening for them to flee. In open ground she avoids being surrounded and uses the tail for balance, not as a weapon.

Background
Iorwen was born in a mountain-side clutch community whose young were often hired out to the lowland court as guards, dancers, or ceremonial attendants. Her mother, Nessa, taught her to read people by their feet: who was about to flee, who was carrying grief, and who had been told to kneel too often. At thirteen, Iorwen was assigned to palace service under a contract her family believed was temporary. The contract became a chain of extensions, fines, and disputed signatures. Her training was real, and so was her skill, but the court classified her as property and dressed that fact in ruby ornaments and ceremonial language. The turning point came during the Lantern Flood, when a palace retaining wall gave way and water rushed through a servant passage. Iorwen could have escaped through a gate left open by the chaos. Instead, she broke formation to haul a trapped kitchen child onto a stair, then held the passage while attendants fled. The child lived. The court praised her loyalty and tightened her restraint afterward, teaching her that virtue could be used as another lock. She has since quietly taught younger attendants how to spot weak hinges and safe routes. She is protective of the palace physician, Sava, who treats her feet without asking for gratitude, and wary of Captain Branik, who respects her skill but insists the law is the same as justice. Her present problem is a new order to accompany a royal envoy beyond the capital, where the court's control over her could become absolute. She is gathering proof that the original service contract was altered after her family's seal was forged.
Role in the story
A skilled palace protector whose position places her between the royal household and the people it exploits. She can become an ally, a source of access and intelligence, or the moral center of a palace conflict. Her freedom is not a simple rescue: she wants the other attendants protected and the contract system challenged.
