The Guardian of Crescent Woods
The Guardian of Crescent Woods
At the table
Voice
Its voice rises through the trunk like water forced through a hollow log, layered with the creak of loaded timber and a soft grit of shifting bark. Words arrive slowly, shaped by centuries of listening to wind and roots; the name Eirlys comes out with a careful, dry catch, as though the Guardian must part two branches to say it.
The Guardian speaks in measured declarations and questions rooted in natural processes. It calls the moonwell "the spring that remembers" and describes danger as something that "has put its teeth in the water." In calmer moods it can be curious and unexpectedly wry; when frightened, it repeats short commands such as "stay" and "leave the root unharmed."
Speech patterns
How to play them
Approach without weapons readied, keep a respectful distance from the moonwell, and offer a specific sign of peaceful intent. The Guardian responds better to concrete acts, such as replacing a damaged stone or tending the blue flowers, than to vague promises. Showing knowledge of Eirlys may reach its grief, but mentioning the shard without care can trigger an attack. It can become an ally if the shard's influence is addressed and it is given a way to protect the spring without attacking every visitor.
Goal
Protect the moonwell without driving every living creature away from Crescent Woods.
Motivation
A deep instinct to keep the forest and its well alive has been entangled with the shard's pressure and the Guardian's unresolved grief.
Appearance
A towering treant with a trunk broad as a cottage doorway, its bark ridged like old riverbeds and furred with velvety green moss. Pale shelf fungi cluster beneath its limbs like little listening ears. Its crown is a ragged canopy of silver-leafed branches that clatter softly even in still air. It leans forward as if bracing against a wind no one else can feel, and when it waits, it puts its weight on one enormous root while the others slowly test the soil. It smells strongly of wet leaves, bruised mint, and the mineral tang of a deep well; it knows the smell and calls it the scent of a healthy forest. Unexpectedly, it keeps a small, carefully tended patch of bright blue flowers growing in a hollow between its roots.
Clothing
No garments. Its bark carries strips of old keeper's linen caught in the crevices, and thin loops of dried ivy hang from its branches like forgotten offerings.
Body language
It keeps its trunk pitched forward and its crown angled toward whoever is speaking. Its roots shift continuously under the soil, with most of its weight resting on one broad root as though it expects the earth to move. Anger makes its branches spread wide enough to blot out the moon; uncertainty makes the smallest twigs tap against its trunk.

Distinguishing features
Personality
12 traits and drivesIt is patient enough to listen to rain for a whole day, yet quick to interpret a stranger's hurried movement as an attack. - Alignment
- Neutral, driven into indiscriminate violence by grief and the shard's influence.

Combat
AC 16 · HP 138 · 30 ft.The Guardian begins by blocking the approach to the moonwell and uses Crescent Snare to divide a group or pin down anyone carrying digging tools. It grapples the nearest apparent threat and uses Root Crush, preferring to immobilize rather than kill when the shard's agitation briefly recedes. It throws debris at ranged attackers and avoids leaving the ground around the well. If shown the blue flowers or reminded of Eirlys, it may hesitate long enough for a peaceful appeal.

Background
The Guardian took root beside the moonwell when Crescent Woods was young, entrusted by the first keepers to protect the spring and the strange shard sleeping beneath it. For centuries, it guided lost travelers toward safe paths and drove lumberers away with warnings rather than violence. Its closest companion was a human well-keeper, Eirlys, who visited each spring to clear leaves from the water and tell it news of the changing world. When Eirlys died during a winter fever, the Guardian kept the blue flowers she had planted alive in its roots and learned to grieve without moving. Years later, a tremor cracked the well's stone basin. The shard rose into view, and its influence twisted old sorrow into a conviction that every stranger might be the one who would take Eirlys away again. Now the Guardian attacks hunters, pilgrims, and trespassers alike. It has recently driven a family of charcoal burners from their shelter and is troubled by the cries of their youngest child, which it mistakes for a warning from the shard. It still tries to protect the forest, but no longer trusts its own judgment.
Role in the story
Antagonist and possible ally in the quest "Howling in the Grove." The Guardian obstructs access to the moonwell because it believes the shard must be protected, while its sorrow-driven violence threatens the very community and woodland it once safeguarded.
“For centuries, it guided lost travelers toward safe paths and drove lumberers away with warnings rather than violence.”
- Faction
- Ancient protector of Crescent Woods and the moonwell; formerly honored by the local Mosswives, though it no longer recognizes their customs reliably.
