Brundin Axebringer
Brundin Axebringer
At the table
“Brace it. Step back. Now listen.”
Voice
A dry, breath-marked voice with a faint rasp at the end of long shifts, shaped by hot air, dust, and years of calling measurements across a noisy forge. Before answering, he draws a quick breath through his nose, as if testing the room's resonance.
His words carry the breath-and-grit rhythm of a man who has spent decades speaking over furnaces and listening between hammer blows. He articulates technical terms carefully, clips ordinary instructions short, and sometimes pauses mid-sentence to hear a sound others have missed.
Speech patterns
How to play them
He offers clear practical instructions and a fair reward, but initially describes the binding failure as 'worse than expected' rather than admitting how close it is to collapse. He responds well to direct questions, especially if the party demonstrates care for the workers. If pressed, he reveals more in stages and eventually admits that his own earlier mistake shaped the current danger.
Goal
Recover the binding shard, stabilize the failing runes, and keep the council from learning the full extent of the damage until the forge is safe enough to evacuate.
Motivation
To prevent another preventable death and prove, through careful work rather than excuses, that the forge can be saved.
Appearance
Brundin looks carved by years of forge heat and mountain weather: his cheeks are wind-roughened and ruddy, the skin at his temples dry as old parchment, and fine black grit lives in the creases beside his nose. He moves with a measured, slightly forward-leaning gait, as if the floor might give him news through his boots. Before he speaks, he takes a short, audible breath through his nose and waits, listening for an answer from the room. Unexpectedly for a runemaster, he keeps a tiny sprig of dried mountain thyme tucked into his breast pocket and checks it like a keepsake.
Clothing
A soot-dark wool coat with a high collar, a patched leather apron, thick trousers, and boots with pale mineral dust ground into the seams. His cuffs are fastened with mismatched brass hooks, one repaired with a length of copper wire.
Body language
He angles one ear toward whoever is speaking and holds his shoulders still, but his thumb keeps rubbing the edge of his iron tuning wedge. When anxious, he presses both feet flat to the ground as if trying to feel the forge's pulse.

Distinguishing features
Personality
13 traits and drivesBrundin is methodical and sincerely protective, but the same caution that makes him dependable also makes him evasive. Around workers, he is dryly funny and attentive to practical needs; around officials, he becomes formal and guarded. When tired, he grows stubborn and mistakes silence for control. Faced with a crisis, he can act decisively, then spend days second-guessing every choice.
- Alignment
- Neutral good, though his secrecy sometimes puts institutional loyalty ahead of candor.

Combat
AC 12 · HP 9 · 25 ft.Brundin is a noncombatant and tries to get between danger and the forge crew only long enough to direct an escape. He uses his hammer defensively, keeps close to cover, and uses Rattle the Mark to spoil an attack rather than pursue a foe. He will not use runic tricks near the sealed force unless there is no other way to prevent immediate deaths.

Background
Brundin was raised in a stone-cutting hamlet where his mother taught him letters by tracing them in flour and his father taught him to hear when a block was under stress. He apprenticed under Forgemaster Brynna Kettlestone, first as a furnace tender, then as a rune-reader trusted to inspect the mountain forge's old bindings. Years ago, during a tremor, Brundin misread a hairline fracture as harmless settling. A binding failed, a surge of heat killed two workers, and Brynna took public blame to keep the council from shutting the forge. Brundin has never stopped hearing the crack that preceded it. He became patient, exacting, and privately terrified of making another confident mistake. Now the old bindings are failing more quickly, and a shard needed for their repair lies near a sealed force beneath the forge. Brundin has asked adventurers to recover it without disturbing the seal. He wants the work done before the council's inspectors arrive, but he also knows that concealing the truth may leave the next crew in danger.
Role in the story
Questgiver for 'Session 5: Runes of the Mountain Forge.' Brundin hires the party to recover a shard without provoking the sealed force, while trying to prevent the council from discovering how badly the old bindings have failed. His account of events can become more candid as trust develops.
