Appearance
Jareth is a narrow, restless man whose body seems permanently folded around a desk that is no longer there. He waits with his weight balanced on the balls of his feet, heels hovering just above the floor, ready to flee or retrieve a misplaced document. His skin has the dry, faintly powdered look of someone who works amid ash and old paper. His hair is combed with obsessive precision on the left side, yet the ends curl wildly as though they have been singed by invisible heat. He moves in quick, economical starts, stopping so abruptly that his coat continues to sway after him. The first impression he leaves is of a frightened clerk, but his hands are unexpectedly elegant and steady when handling fragile evidence.
“His voice is soft, rapid, and carefully articulated, with the clipped rhythm of someone reading aloud while trying not to be overheard. Under stress, he swallows the ends of sentences.”

Distinguishing Features
His left cuff is always fastened with a tiny brass seal instead of a button.
He smells faintly of sulfur, lamp oil, and crushed mint leaves.
His fingernails are stained black at the tips from archival ink, but the rest of his hands are meticulously clean.
He carries himself like a man perpetually listening for footsteps beneath the floor.
When startled, he instinctively mouths the first few words of whatever document he last read.
Voice
“A quiet, hurried tenor with a dry rasp, as though every sentence has passed through dust and sulfur before reaching the listener.”
Clothing
A smoke-gray clerk's coat with too many inner pockets, a high collar dusted with yellow sulfur powder, soft black trousers, and practical lace-up shoes wrapped at the soles with strips of old parchment to muffle his steps.
Body Language
Jareth keeps one shoulder angled toward the nearest exit and presses his thumb against the edge of his sleeve when lying. When relaxed, which is rare, he leans over objects rather than people, as if documents are safer company.
