Azkhar
Azkhar
At the table
“The next consequence is yours to choose.”
Voice
A dry, resonant voice with a faint rasp, as though each word has crossed a dusty cavern. His breath is measured and his consonants land cleanly, shaped by years of calling measurements across echoing chambers. Anger makes him faster and more forceful, not softer; he presses each phrase like a tool into stone.
He speaks in complete, carefully weighted sentences, with the clipped precision of someone accustomed to dictating measurements in dangerous caverns. His work has taught him to distinguish a hairline fracture from a collapse, so he often describes social risks in the language of load, stress, and failure. When rattled, he repeats a key noun as if checking its dimensions.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Azkhar first offers practical cooperation and speaks as if the ritual is an engineering problem with an inevitable solution. He listens carefully to anyone who can explain the shard's behavior, but dismisses appeals based only on sentiment. Evidence that the shard is choosing freely unsettles him. Mentioning his mother or the wind-up bird makes him defensive; speaking honestly about Pema may make him pause.
Goal
Bind the last living shard to a lesser deity and secure its power for the Obsidian Tribunal before the Nexus destabilizes.
Motivation
He wants to prove that loss can be converted into prevention. Beneath his certainty is a desperate need to believe that his mother's death was not the consequence of a bad choice.
Appearance
Azkhar stands with the unnerving balance of someone braced against a ship's deck, though the floor is still. His movements are clipped and deliberate; he turns his whole torso to address people, as if refusing to give any one person the advantage of his profile. Within a minute, most visitors notice his eyes repeatedly measuring doorways, ceiling corners, and the empty space between people, never settling on a face for long. His skin has a dry, fine-grained texture like river clay, and his dark hair is combed into narrow ridges that remain precise even after a fight. He smells faintly of hot stone and rain on dust. Unexpectedly, he keeps a little wooden wind-up bird tucked inside his formal sleeve, winding it before difficult negotiations.
Clothing
A high-collared charcoal coat reinforced with flexible plates, a pale woven sash marked with surveying ticks, close-fitting gloves, and a mantle pinned with the Tribunal's faceted seal. The coat is impeccably maintained but dust gathers along its hem.
Body language
He holds his shoulders square and his weight evenly distributed, with his hands usually folded as though keeping an invisible instrument steady. When he is uncertain, his gaze moves to corners and thresholds. When he has decided, he becomes almost perfectly still.

Distinguishing features
Personality
12 traits and drivesAzkhar is rigorous and protective, yet his protectiveness becomes controlling whenever he feels events slipping beyond calculation. In calm company he can be unexpectedly attentive, remembering small details and making himself useful without being asked. Under pressure he becomes brisk, procedural, and dismissive of feelings he cannot quantify. He is not cruel for pleasure, but he can rationalize cruelty as a temporary measure if he believes it will avert a larger disaster.
- Alignment
- Lawful neutral, increasingly willing to commit atrocities in the name of imposed order

AC 15 · HP 52 · 30 ft.Azkhar keeps distance, uses Pressure Bloom to break formations, and targets spellcasters or anyone approaching the shard. He uses Nexus Lance to shove enemies away from the ritual circle. He retreats if the shard is threatened or if Pema calls him by the private name she used as an apprentice. His magic is custom and is not presented as a canonical spell list.

Background
Azkhar was raised among the surveyors who mapped the unstable caverns beneath the Seventh Nexus. His mother, a patient stone-reader, taught him to recognize the difference between pressure that supports a vault and pressure that cracks it. He learned the lesson, then chose to ignore its moral equivalent. During the Sundering of the East Gallery, an experimental binding collapsed. Azkhar had time to save either his mother or a group of trapped apprentices; he chose the apprentices, believing his mother could escape by the route she had mapped. She did not. The survivors called him brave, and he has spent years trying to make that choice mean something. The Obsidian Tribunal recruited him as a nexus theoretician. He now seeks to bind a lesser deity with the last living shard, convinced that overwhelming magical pressure will force it to select a master and give the Tribunal the leverage to prevent another catastrophe. His former apprentice, Pema, has discovered that the shard responds to trust rather than force and is trying to reach him before the rite begins. Azkhar has not told the Tribunal that the shard's living pulse resembles his mother's old stone-reading signal.
Role in the story
Azkhar is the principal human antagonist of Storm at the Seventh Nexus. He is trying to force the last living shard to bind a lesser deity for the Obsidian Tribunal, believing magical pressure can compel it to choose a master. He is a dangerous opponent, but also a possible source of technical knowledge and a person whose certainty can fracture when confronted with the shard's will.
