Mara Tern
Mara Tern
At the table
Voice
A carrying, slightly rasped voice shaped by calling instructions over running water and speaking in close stone chambers. She breathes through her nose between short clauses and gives measurements a precise, emphatic stress. When exhausted, her canal-family sayings come out before she can stop them.
She speaks in clipped, worksite sentences built around measurements, directions, and consequences. Years of calling across rushing water have given her voice a firm, carrying edge, with a slight rasp when she has spent a long shift underground. Her old canal-family idioms surface when she is tired. She does not soften her voice when angry; she becomes faster and more exact, as if a mistake in wording could bring down a wall.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Mara is guarded with officials and candid with anyone who demonstrates practical competence. Offer a concrete plan for keeping the crew safe and she will share her maps, explain the familiar excavation, and admit where the structure has changed. Accuse her of causing the breach and she becomes factual and defensive; show her evidence that clears the crew or confirms the pressure seam and she will risk her own standing to help.
Goal
Get every canal engineer and crew member out of the Archive alive, then make the true cause of the breach impossible to bury.
Motivation
Mara's first duty is to the living people who depend on her decisions. She also wants the breach investigated honestly, even if the evidence exposes her own compromised judgment.
Appearance
Mara has a broad, planted stance and moves with the measured side-to-side sway of someone accustomed to working on narrow canal ledges. Her hands are thickened and deeply callused, with pale lines of old lime worked into the creases; she tests surfaces with her fingertips before trusting her weight to them. Her face is sun-browned and square, framed by hair cut bluntly at the jaw. She takes up more space than she realizes, leaning over maps and worktables as if they were unstable structures. An unexpected detail for a hard-bitten foreperson: she keeps a tiny, carefully folded paper menagerie in her coat, each creature made from an obsolete work order.
Clothing
A tar-dark canvas coat with a high collar, patched elbows, and a chalked map tucked into its inner lining; a leather belt carries a measuring cord, a small level, and a blunt iron hammer. Her boots are wrapped with extra strips of sailcloth for grip.
Body language
Plants both boots before making a decision, even on level ground. She points with a blunt pencil rather than a finger and unconsciously braces doorframes when speaking beneath heavy ceilings. When someone mentions the breach, her shoulders set as if expecting a load to shift.

Distinguishing features
Personality
14 traits and drivesMara is compassionate in action but not especially comforting in manner: she will put a blanket around a shaken worker, then immediately ask them to carry a message. She is meticulous with measurements and suspicious of official assurances, yet she can make a quick, intuitive call when the water changes. In calm company she is dryly funny and quietly sentimental; under threat she turns sharp, procedural, and difficult to interrupt. She wants to be trusted but hates being treated as an authority without question.
- Alignment
- Lawful neutral, with a stubborn preference for protecting people over protecting procedure

She uses Clear the Run to move crew or companions out of danger, places herself between attackers and injured workers when she must, and uses her hammer only to buy time. In the Archive she prioritizes opening routes, shutting sluices, and preventing anyone from being isolated by rising water.

Equipment
- Iron survey hammer (tool and weapon)A short, heavy iron hammer used for tapping masonry and, reluctantly, self-defense.
- Survey cord (tool)A waxed cord with knots at measured intervals, used to check depth and distance.
- Pocket level (tool)A brass-and-glass instrument with a slightly warped casing; Mara knows how to compensate for its error.
- Canal plans (document)Folded plans of the familiar excavation, marked with old repairs and routes Mara considers safe, subject to change.

Background
Mara grew up in a family of canal tenders, learning to read water height from stains on stone before she could read a survey. She became foreperson after the previous supervisor was swept into a maintenance channel during a sudden gate release. For years Mara made a point of obeying every inspection protocol, until a junior engineer named Iago warned that a pressure seam beneath the Sunken Archive was shifting. The official reading said stable. Mara ordered a temporary brace anyway, and the brace held through a night of rising water. Months later, during the Archive's renewed activity, the seam failed in a different place and the breach opened. Now the excavation is familiar but increasingly unreliable: water runs uphill in one corridor, old doors answer to no visible mechanism, and the crew hears tapping beneath sealed walls. Mara wants the canal engineers and her crew alive, but fears the inquiry will blame her for the breach because she signed the last work order. She remains in regular contact with Iago, who wants her to publish the original pressure readings, and with Orena, her estranged sister, who runs a small ferry service above the works and has begun evacuating passengers without permission.
Role in the story
Witness, guide, and anxious point of contact for the canal crew in the quest The Deep Stacks of the Sunken Archive. Mara can orient the party within the familiar excavation, distinguish old hazards from new ones, and help them reach workers in danger. Her testimony and hidden measurements can complicate the inquiry into the breach.
“She became foreperson after the previous supervisor was swept into a maintenance channel during a sudden gate release.”
- Faction
- Foreperson of the canal engineering crew assigned to the Sunken Archive; respected by the workers, under scrutiny from the excavation inquiry
