Voice

A rough, dry-edged voice shaped by shouting across kiln drafts and rushing water. He places emphasis on practical nouns and verbs, and his laugh breaks into a gravelly bark rather than a polished chuckle.

His voice has a rasp like grit dragged across fired clay, shaped by years shouting over kiln drafts and floodwater. He puts stress on the useful word in a sentence, not the impressive one, and leaves a brief pause before giving an order so people can hear it over noise. His laugh is a rough, open bark that shows his crowded teeth.

Speech patterns

Uses practical comparisons: 'That promise has the look of a gate built with wet timber.'
Asks who will be hurt if a plan fails before asking what the plan earns.
Calls people by their names rather than their titles, except when deliberately showing respect.
When embarrassed, changes the subject to whether everyone has eaten.

How to play them

Vesper offers clear, useful help before asking for trust. He responds well to people who take responsibility for their actions and poorly to those who endanger others for profit. He will share suspicions if asked directly, but first checks whether the listener can act on them without making the danger worse.

Goal

Expose whoever is weakening Bellwater's sluice gates and secure repairs before the next major storm.

Motivation

He believes that strength is only worthwhile when it gives someone else time to get clear.

Appearance

Vesper Ashhorn is a broad-shouldered tiefling whose swept-back horns look like charred, ridged wood, with pale rings where years of rain have scoured their tips. His skin has the rough, matte texture of old kiln clay, darkened by soot around the jaw and knuckles. When he eats, his squared jaw works with a slow, grinding motion, and his blunt, slightly crowded teeth show in a laugh that arrives more readily than his smile. He walks with a measured, heel-first tread, as if testing every floor for hidden weakness. The unexpected detail is that he keeps a tiny paper menagerie folded in the inner pocket of his armor, each animal carefully colored with bright, childish inks.

Clothing

A soot-darkened breastplate over a weatherproof brown coat, patched at the elbows. He wears a faded red scarf tucked beneath the gorget, heavy gloves, and a belt with a small case of folded paper animals.

Body language

He plants his feet squarely when listening, but turns one horn toward a speaker as if bringing a difficult sound into focus. His tail gives a small, irritated tap against his greaves when someone evades a question. In a crisis, he becomes economical: no pacing, no grand gestures, only a hand indicating where to stand.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Vesper is warm in small, practical ways but guarded about gratitude, and he can be fiercely stubborn while sincerely willing to change his mind when shown sound evidence. At ease, he jokes and gives away food; under pressure, he becomes blunt and exacting. He is gentle with frightened people but unforgiving toward anyone who uses their authority to abandon others.

Alignment
Neutral good

Quirks

Folds scraps of paper into animals whenever he must wait without a task.
Taps a tool twice against stone before trusting it.
Names the flood heights marked on his shield as if introducing old acquaintances.
Eats the crust of bread first and saves the soft center for whoever looks most tired.

Habits

Checks door hinges, bridge joints, and gate pins while other people are still introducing themselves.
Offers food to anyone who has been standing watch, even if he has to give away his own portion.
When a plan goes wrong, assigns jobs in short, concrete phrases instead of arguing about blame.
After a frightening encounter, folds a scrap of paper into an animal and gives it to the youngest person present.

Has little patience for leaders who delay action while debating how to look blameless.
Keeps investigating a danger after others have agreed it is time to withdraw.

That his sister will inherit his habit of mistaking self-sacrifice for responsibility.
That Oru's betrayal was not exceptional, but simply the way every company behaves when the stakes are high.

Wants and needs · 3

Reliable proof of who is sabotaging the sluice gates.
A chance to repair his relationship with Nela before the next crisis.
Someone to remind him that accepting help is not the same as abandoning responsibility.

Combat

AC 17 · HP 44 · 30 ft.

Vesper takes a position between threats and vulnerable allies, using his shield and reach of movement to control a narrow approach. He opens with a Trip Attack or Menacing Attack against an enemy likely to break through, then uses Action Surge when an ally is in immediate danger. He saves his reaction for Parry unless an enemy's movement creates a better Riposte opportunity. He retreats only to a defensible position, and never chases a fleeing foe past an endangered companion.

Background

Vesper grew up in a kiln district where his mother, Sava, fired roof tiles and his father repaired the town's floodgates. He learned to judge people by the work they left behind: a clean joint, a sound hinge, a door that opened for the next person. At nineteen, he joined a road company guarding caravans, eager to be useful and hungry for a life beyond smoke-black streets. During a bridge ambush, his captain ordered the guards to protect the cargo and abandon a wagon of trapped refugees. Vesper disobeyed, held the attackers at the bridgehead, and watched the captain flee with the company purse. The survivors made it across, but one, a child named Miri, later died of an infection Vesper could not treat. He left the company and trained under a retired militia sergeant, learning disciplined swordwork and battlefield tactics. Now he serves as a practical troubleshooter for the flood-prone town of Bellwater. His old captain, Oru, has resurfaced as a respected caravan broker, while Vesper's sister, Nela, wants him to stop taking risks on behalf of people who may never thank him. He is currently trying to prove that a series of deliberately weakened sluice gates is not an accident before the next hard rain.

Role in the story

A capable local ally whose investigation can reveal a threat to the town, while his old betrayal complicates the party's choices about evidence, justice, and who deserves protection.

“He learned to judge people by the work they left behind: a clean joint, a sound hinge, a door that opened for the next person.”

Miri's older brother, Jori, lives in Bellwater and has never forgiven Vesper for failing to save her.
Oru, his former captain, now brokers caravans and may be connected to the sabotage of the floodgates.
