Olek Kest
Olek Kest
At the table
Voice
A forward, rough-edged voice that carries across an open landing without sounding theatrical. Its force comes from years of calling instructions over wind and machinery, not from volume alone. When he is angry, his words get more exact and his consonants more pronounced.
His sentences are clipped and built like orders, with a freight hauler's habit of putting the important word first. He learned to make himself heard over creaking lifts and gusting wind, so consonants land hard and clean. When he is tired, a rough rasp catches at the ends of phrases. He uses plain terms, avoids grand speeches, and sometimes slips into Orcish for old work sayings.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Olek begins with practical questions: where the characters came from, what they saw, and who else is at risk. He respects candor and useful evidence more than titles. If threatened, he creates space for bystanders and gives one clear warning. If the characters challenge a rule with a credible reason, he will listen, though he expects them to accept responsibility for the consequences.
Goal
Expose whoever is forging evacuation notices before panic empties the upper platforms, and change the Guard's procedures so no captain can seal a stairwell without a second check.
Motivation
To make the Guard a source of safety rather than a source of fear, even if that means openly confronting its own failures.
Appearance
Olek is a square-jawed half-orc who seems to occupy a little more space than his broad frame strictly requires. He stands as if every doorway has been measured for a shield-wall, then makes a deliberate effort to give civilians room to pass. His skin is deep olive-brown, weathered to a dry, fine-grained texture across his forehead and knuckles by years of wind on the exposed stairways of Veyra's Ladder. His clipped hair bristles like dark wire. He wears immaculate gloves even on hot days, and his careful, economical movements make him look less like a brawler than a gate being shut. The unexpected detail: a tiny wooden bird, carved with astonishing patience, rides in the same pocket as his arrest warrants.
Clothing
A dark green guard coat with reinforced shoulders, a high collar against the wind, and brass branch insignia polished without ostentation. His gloves are spotless, fitted over hands roughened by rope and cold. His boots have worn soles but are meticulously repaired.
Body language
He plants his feet as though bracing against a gust, shoulders angled to leave a clear route past him. Before making a threat, he taps two fingers against the inside of his wrist. When someone speaks about a death, he stops moving altogether.

Background
Olek was raised among the switchback stairs and wind-scoured platforms of Veyra's Ladder, where a missed step could cost more than a day's wages. His mother, Taz, repaired climbing harnesses, and his father, Geth, hauled freight until a snapped lift-chain killed him. At nineteen, Olek joined the Branch Guard, believing rules could keep grief from becoming ordinary. During the riot at the upper cistern, he obeyed an order to seal a stairwell and trapped a group of frightened workers on the wrong side. They survived, but only because a young guard named Daro disobeyed and opened a maintenance hatch. Olek later testified to the truth, costing his commander his post and earning Olek a reputation for being difficult to command. Now captain, he keeps Daro as his trusted sergeant and quietly sends wages to the family of the worker who was injured in the crush. His current problem is a string of forged evacuation notices that could turn a routine supply shortage into a stampede.
Role in the story
A formidable local authority who can become an ally, obstacle, or honest witness. Olek offers the characters a route into the investigation of forged evacuation notices, while his insistence on public safety may complicate any reckless plan.
