At the table

Voice

Her voice has a dry rasp from dust, cold air, and shouting patrol commands, with a bright, abrupt laugh that arrives before she seems to decide whether something is funny. She projects easily across a cavern and clips the ends of sentences when she expects people to act.

Fie speaks in quick, clipped phrases shaped by years of giving orders over bowfire and bargaining across language barriers. Her consonants have a dry, papery rasp, while her laugh bursts out bright and sharp. She uses jokes to make threats sound entertaining and makes promises in plain words, without ornament.

Speech patterns

Calls dangerous plans “a quick errand” and petty disputes “a full campaign.”
Uses blunt jokes to test whether people are frightened, angry, or still listening.
Names prices, risks, and rewards with cheerful precision.
When discussing the Liberators, drops the salesmanship and speaks with surprising plainness.

How to play them

Fie is brisk, entertaining, and openly transactional at first. Offer her a meaningful challenge, a chance to protect the Liberators, or a way to earn public credit and she becomes an energetic ally. Treat her like a disposable hireling and she turns cold, bargains hard, and starts planning an exit. She responds better to direct criticism than to moral lectures, especially if the criticism comes with a workable alternative.

Goal

Win the Twilight Council's approval to lead a major expedition into the Underdark, returning with discoveries and victories that secure lasting prominence for both First Light and herself.

Motivation

To turn past survival into earned authority, wealth, and a place in a family she believes will not abandon her.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Fie is small and elven-featured, with ashen-grey skin like cool fireplace dust and long pink hair that streams behind her in loose, bright ribbons. Her orange eyes glow like embers seen through a keyhole. Two twisting, branch-like horns rise through her hair, their tips wrapped in tiny brass tags from old raiding trophies. Her broad, powdery moth wings have smoky patterns that blur when she banks through the air. She moves in sudden, loose-limbed darts, then lands with unnerving stillness. Up close she smells strongly of crushed mint and bowstring wax, a scent she knows perfectly well and insists is “good for morale.” For someone who commands a guard, she keeps a child’s painted wooden horse tucked into her belt, its paint rubbed away where her thumb worries it.

Clothing

A fitted dark guard coat cut short to leave room for her wings, with First Light's watch insignia pinned over a concealed pocket. She wears layered belts for arrows, lock tools, and trophies, plus soft-soled boots reinforced at the toes.

Body language

She perches on chair backs and railings rather than sitting properly. Her wings twitch in short, irritated pulses when townsfolk complain, but open wide when she is excited by danger. She taps the wooden horse at her belt before making a promise, then watches closely to see who noticed.

Distinguishing features

Smells of crushed mint and bowstring wax, a scent she knows is noticeable.
Her moth wings have smoky, eye-like markings that seem to shift when she turns.

Two curling, branch-like horns are threaded with small brass trophy tags.

Personality

15 traits and drives

Fie is ambitious and funny, but her humor is often a blade used to control a room. She loves decisive action and hates being managed, yet she takes the Liberators' advice more seriously than she admits. With strangers she bargains and performs confidence; with her guards she is exacting but protective; with the Liberators she can be frank, teasing, and unexpectedly sentimental. She laughs at danger because she believes fear should be made useful, not because she fails to feel it.

Alignment
Chaotic neutral

Quirks

Taps the wooden horse at her belt before making a promise.
Gives each of her arrows a different nickname, then denies doing so.
Counts exits by glancing at the ceiling rather than the doors.
When pleased, folds her wings around herself like a cloak and rocks once on her heels.
Leaves tiny mint leaves in the pockets of guards who have pulled off a clever patrol.

Habits

Turns routine patrol reports into arguments for a larger expedition.
Makes a point of publicly praising guards who show initiative, even when their initiative causes her extra work.
When outmatched, laughs openly and immediately looks for a route, a distraction, or a useful hostage.
Keeps small tokens from people she has helped, though she describes them as evidence of debts owed.

Traits · 4

Turns charm into leverage, but is capable of sincere warmth toward people she considers hers.
Craves public recognition, yet resents anyone who tries to direct her path to it.
Enjoys a clean victory, but will accept a messy one if it prevents a worse loss.
Mocks sentimentality while carefully preserving sentimental objects.

Flaws · 4

Greed and hunger for recognition can distort her judgment.
She can be ruthless when she believes a faster outcome serves her goals.
She is impatient with ordinary civic problems and underestimates how much they matter to residents.
She treats trust as something that must be earned repeatedly, even by those who have already proven themselves.

Fears · 3

Being reduced to a disposable subordinate again.
That the Liberators will eventually see her as a raider who merely changed uniforms.
That First Light will become safe, prosperous, and too small for her to matter.

Wants and needs · 4

A Council mandate to lead a dangerous Underdark expedition.
Recognition that cannot be revoked on a whim.
To protect the Liberators without admitting how deeply she depends on them.
A way to repay Greystone without surrendering her position.

Combat

AC 28 · HP 135 · 25 feet; fly 25 feet

Fie tries to make the fight short and lopsided. She takes to the air, uses invisibility or illusions to break enemy focus, and shoots at isolated or distracted targets. She prefers to make enemies waste actions, attack the wrong targets, or expose themselves to her guards. If her advantage collapses, she disengages rather than die for a clean-looking victory.

Fey Skirmisher (custom): Fie can Fly, Step, or Sneak as part of a successful Feint against a creature. This movement does not trigger reactions from that creature.
Plane-wise. Fie is exceptionally knowledgeable about the Feywild and Shadowfell, including their common hazards, inhabitants, and crossings.

Spells

Illusory Object (level 2, illusion). A visual illusion of an object or scene, useful for misdirection and false cover. Heightened to rank 5.
Mirror Image (level 2, illusion). Creates illusory duplicates that make it difficult to determine which image is real.
Invisibility (level 4, illusion). Makes the target invisible until the spell ends, subject to the spell's normal limitations.
Suggestion (level 3, enchantment). Attempts to control a creature's actions by magical suggestion, subject to the spell's normal limitations and saving throw.
Confusion (level 5, enchantment). Confuses creatures in an area, potentially causing them to act unpredictably, including attacking the wrong targets, as determined by the spell's normal effects.

Actions

Enchanted Shortbow. Ranged Strike +20, range increment 60 feet, damage piercing plus precision damage. On a critical hit, the target is dazzled until the end of its next turn by a burst of illusory moths. The dazzled effect is a custom flourish, not a standard property of the bow.
Moth-Flash Feint. Fie attempts to Feint against a creature within 30 feet using Deception +20, weaving a false opening into its vision. On a success, the target is off-guard against Fie's attacks until the end of her next turn. On a critical success, it is also off-guard against the next attack made against it before that point.
Primal Fey Spellcasting (custom presentation). Fie casts a prepared spell. Her spell attack modifier is +19 and spell DC is 27. Her spell repertoire is listed in spells.

Reactions

Wingbeat Escape. Trigger: A creature Fie can see targets her with an attack. Effect: Fie Flies up to 10 feet. If this movement places her outside the attack's reach or range, the attack is disrupted. This custom reaction does not disrupt attacks that can still legally reach her.
False Opening. Trigger: A creature within 30 feet that Fie can see succeeds at a Strike against one of Fie's allies. Effect: Fie casts a visual illusion around the attack's apparent point of origin. The attacker attempts a Will save. On a failure, it is off-guard against the next attack made against it before the end of its next turn. This is a custom illusion effect and has the visual trait.

Can arrange watch escorts and legal access to restricted areas of First Light.
Can brief adventurers on Underdark routes, Feywild customs, and Shadowfell hazards.
Can help plan a patrol, ambush, or extraction using the city's guard resources.

Practical intelligence about nearby Underdark routes and known planar crossings.

Background

Fie learned early that a fortune was only as safe as the mood of the person holding power over it. She raided in the service of the Shadow Fey Lord Oishin, building a hoard through patient ambushes and quick escapes, only to watch Oishin seize it on a whim. The loss taught her to distrust patronage and prize visible rank as much as treasure. She later followed the Shadow Dragon Rynskald into the mortal world, drawn by the promise of richer targets, and helped raid the deep gnome settlement of Greystone. When the Liberators defeated Rynskald, they spared her. Fie expected a trap, then a bargain; instead, they offered her a chance to choose what she did next. She chose to help them, first out of self-preservation, then because their stubborn loyalty began to feel like family. When they settled First Light and formed the Twilight Council, Fie stayed. The Council made her captain of the city guard, a position she has turned into a platform for ambition. She still sends coin and useful intelligence to the former Greystone survivors as restitution, though she refuses to call it guilt. Now she is impatient with disputes over stolen turnips and noisy neighbors, and presses the Council to let her lead dangerous expeditions deeper into the Underdark. She wants glory for First Light, but also wants a story large enough that nobody can casually take her place away.

Role in the story

A reformed former raider who is both a valuable ally and a politically ambitious guard captain. She can open doors to the city's leadership, lead a dangerous expedition, or create conflict when her appetite for glory outruns the Council's caution.

“The loss taught her to distrust patronage and prize visible rank as much as treasure.”
