Mara Bellweather
Mara Bellweather
At the table
Voice
A dry, rasp-edged speaking voice, with a small metallic ring on words she has chosen carefully. Years of calling over crowds have given it a clean carrying quality without a shout. She articulates names and figures sharply, and after long hearings her breath catches faintly on hard consonants from old smoke and dust in the bell chamber.
She speaks in crisp, practical clauses shaped by years of keeping records and calling proceedings to order. Her jokes are dry and often arrive as corrections to someone else's grand claim. She gives names and numbers careful emphasis, and when she recounts an expedition detail her vocabulary turns briefly into the precise shorthand of a field mapmaker.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Mara welcomes people who bring evidence, practical proposals, or a willingness to listen. She asks each faction to state its desired outcome, its feared outcome, and what evidence could revise its position. She offers neutral hearing space and help interpreting the tuning fork's readings, but refuses to endorse a plan without examining its risks. To earn her trust, characters should respect the Covenant, protect witnesses, and admit uncertainty. Threats make her end a meeting and move vulnerable people to safety.
Goal
Find out why Orun sleeps and what has changed in his heartbeat before either faction acts on incomplete evidence.
Motivation
Preserve Hearthrest long enough for its people to learn what Orun's sleep means, while keeping each faction from turning fear into an irreversible act.
Appearance
Mara has the weathered, attentive look of someone who has spent decades listening for trouble before it arrives. She stands with her weight settled evenly, moving in small, economical steps that make her seem to glide through the crowded bell chamber. Her dark hair, gone iron-gray at the temples, is braided close to her scalp and pinned with a plain bronze nail. Her coat is mended in neat, mismatched patches, but its wide cuffs are scrubbed and brushed with almost ceremonial care. The coat is too large through the shoulders, a castoff from her adventuring years, and the hem has been shortened and resewn so often it resembles a map of old roads. She smells faintly of beeswax, rain on stone, and hot metal. The unexpected detail: she keeps a tiny paper windmill tucked into her collar and takes it out to test the still air before every hearing.
Clothing
An oversized, patched brown coat with brushed-clean cuffs, a charcoal waistcoat, sturdy trousers, and weatherproof boots resoled with thick pale leather. Her bronze clasp and old adventurer's scarf are conspicuously well cared for.
Body language
Mara gives people her full attention without leaning toward them. When she distrusts a claim, her thumb rubs the worn notch in her tuning fork. She plants her staff across the doorway when tempers rise, not as a threat but as an unmistakable boundary. Her rare smile arrives crookedly, as if she has just noticed the joke a moment before everyone else.

Personality
13 traits and drivesMara is perceptive and pragmatic, with a dry humor that can make a room breathe again or leave a braggart feeling neatly unstitched. She believes people deserve to be heard, but not that every belief deserves equal weight once evidence is available. In public she is patient and procedural; when someone endangers a bystander, her patience snaps into brisk, uncompromising action. Alone, she is more superstitious than she admits, testing ordinary sounds against the rhythm of the buried giant.

Background
Mara once traveled as a mapmaker and field-bard with a small adventuring company. On an expedition beneath Hearthrest, she and her companions found a vast rib of stone that beat like a heart. Their argument over whether to expose the discovery ended in a cave-in that killed her closest friend. Mara came back to town and learned that Hearthrest had been built across the sleeping body of Orun. When the Stillwardens and Dawncallers began sabotaging each other's efforts, she proposed the Covenant of Silence: no faction could strike, excavate, or perform a waking rite without first submitting its plan to a weekly neutral hearing in the hollow bronze bell. She developed practical rules for those hearings: weapons stay outside, each side gets the same speaking time, claims must be paired with observable evidence, and anyone who interrupts forfeits their next turn. Elric Vale, leader of the Stillwardens, trusts her discipline but suspects she conceals evidence. Sera Flint, leader of the Dawncallers, respects Mara's fairness and resents her refusal to endorse awakening Orun. Mara still sends a portion of her earnings to the family of her dead companion. Her current problem is that the tuning fork has begun to register irregular pauses in Orun's heartbeat, while both factions are preparing to treat the change as proof that their own plan is right.
Role in the story
A mediator whose impartial process is a fragile barrier against factional violence, and the keeper of a warning that could overturn both sides' assumptions. She can give the party access to the weekly hearings, task them with gathering evidence, or ask them to investigate the changing heartbeat before the next assembly.
“On an expedition beneath Hearthrest, she and her companions found a vast rib of stone that beat like a heart.”
- Faction
- Neutral keeper of the Covenant of Silence. She is not a member of the Stillwardens or the Dawncallers, though both factions rely on her hearings.
