Bela
Bela
At the table
Voice
Bela's voice has a dry rasp from years of shouting across water, with a faint whistle on s sounds when the air is cold. She projects from her chest and clips the ends of instructions so they carry through wind. After a long shift, her words catch as if she has swallowed river mist; when speaking about Garen, she presses each name and place carefully, as though testing whether it will hold.
She speaks in workmanlike phrases shaped by years of calling over wind and water. Directions come out as commands, even when meant kindly. She often names the practical detail first, then admits the feeling beneath it. When distressed, her words speed up and become clipped, like a chain being hauled through a pulley.

How to play them
Bela is helpful to travelers who respect the ferry and its passengers. Offer practical aid or honest information and she becomes warm, if brisk. Mention Garen or show knowledge of Tovaren's map and her guarded focus becomes intense. Do not pressure her to abandon the search; acknowledge Efa's concerns while asking what Bela needs right now.
Goal
Find out what happened to Garen without abandoning Efa or losing the family ferry.
Motivation
Bela needs proof, not comfort. She believes that a real answer, even a painful one, is kinder than letting Garen's disappearance become a story other people tell for her.
Appearance
Bela has a compact, weather-browned face, a jaw made broad by years of clenching against river spray, and dark hair braided close to her scalp so it cannot catch on ferry rigging. Her oilskin coat shines at the shoulders and is salt-stiff along the cuffs. She walks with the careful, side-to-side balance of someone always accounting for a moving deck. Within a minute, people notice that her gaze goes to hands, exits, and the river's surface before it settles on anyone's face. A small wooden toy her son carved hangs from her belt, its nose polished nearly flat by her thumb.
Clothing
A patched charcoal oilskin coat over a rust-colored wool dress, thick river boots, a belt pouch of nails and waxed cord, and a knitted cap she wears even indoors because the ferry wind has made her head ache.
Body language
She plants her feet as if the ground might drift away, and her hands keep finding a task: testing a knot, rubbing the worn wooden toy, or checking a buckle. When someone lies, she looks briefly at their hands. When Garen is mentioned, her shoulders tip forward and she stops noticing the river.

Personality
14 traits and drivesBela is generous with food and shelter but exacting about rules aboard her ferry. She can be wry and matter-of-fact when fixing a problem, then unexpectedly tender with frightened children or tired animals. She has the patience to wait out a dangerous current but almost none for a vague answer about Garen. When ashamed or afraid, she becomes busier rather than more open.

Background
Bela was born on a ferry and learned the river before she learned letters. Her mother, Efa, kept the crossing at a place locals call Last Chance, a name left over from a flood-season warning that no one had the heart to change. Bela took over its daily work when Efa's knees began to fail. Years ago, Bela's son Garen vanished after taking a job carrying sealed cargo upriver. Tovaren, a traveling mapmaker and occasional passenger, was the last person Bela knows to have spoken with him. Tovaren gave Bela a scrap of a route map and admitted that Garen had asked about a disused landing beyond the marsh. Bela has searched in spare hours ever since, following rumors and asking questions that sometimes put her ferry business at risk. Efa wants her to stop before grief swallows the life she still has. Bela loves her mother and knows the warning is sensible, but she cannot accept that Garen simply chose to disappear. Current troubles include a failing ferry chain, growing toll demands from the reeve's men, and the fear that the next flood will take both her livelihood and whatever trace of her son remains.
Role in the story
A grounded local contact who can ferry the party across dangerous water, provide river knowledge, and draw them into the unresolved mystery of Garen's disappearance. Bela's search can point toward Tovaren and the old landing, while her conflict with Efa gives the story a personal cost.
“Bela took over its daily work when Efa's knees began to fail.”
- Faction
- No formal faction. Bela is part of the loose community of ferry keepers and river traders who rely on one another but distrust the reeve's toll collectors.
