Vexia Scalesworn
Vexia Scalesworn
At the table
Voice
A dry, clear voice shaped by years of reading aloud in archive rooms: the consonants land cleanly, while long days leave a faint papery rasp at the ends of sentences. When she is rattled, her inhale catches and her next phrase comes out too quickly; she pauses, counts one breath, and restarts without pretending nothing happened.
She speaks in carefully assembled clauses, with precise dates and qualifications. Her work has given her a habit of naming the source of a claim before giving the claim itself. When angered, she does not soften her tone; instead, her phrasing becomes shorter and more exact, as if she were reading an indictment aloud.

How to play them
Treat Vexia as a careful witness, not a puzzle box. Explain what you want from her and what will happen to the record. She cooperates with people who accept limits on what the evidence proves, and withdraws when anyone demands that she endorse a conclusion. Trust grows if the party protects the custodian and lets Vexia set conditions for presenting the original.
Goal
Have the original record heard in a public, verifiable proceeding without allowing House Scalesworn to turn her testimony into a partisan attack.
Motivation
Truth should be heard with its limits intact; a fact distorted for a just cause is still a distortion that can be used again.
Appearance
Vexia has a long, narrow face and the composed, slightly forward-tilted posture of someone used to reading documents across crowded tables. Her dark hair is braided close to the scalp and looped beneath a plain cap, with a few silver strands escaping at her temples. She breathes through her nose in small, measured draws; when rattled, the rhythm catches audibly on the inhale, then resumes as if she has deliberately counted herself back into control. She occupies less space than her height suggests, yet her attention fills a room: she turns her whole body toward whoever is speaking and holds their gaze without blinking through the end of a sentence. Unexpectedly, she keeps a tiny folded paper bird tucked into her sleeve and refolds it whenever a formal meeting becomes hostile.
Clothing
A charcoal wool coat with a high collar, practical boots, and a plain cap. Inside the coat are narrow document pockets sewn at different angles so papers do not crease together. She wears no House Scalesworn colors in public.
Body language
She leans toward the speaker but keeps her feet angled toward an exit. When she trusts someone, she sets her papers down and gives them her whole attention. When cornered, she becomes very still, and the caught inhale is the first sign that fear has reached her.

Personality
14 traits and drivesVexia is patient with confused people but impatient with those who pretend confusion to avoid responsibility. She wants to be fair, yet she is not emotionally detached: injustice makes her stubborn, while family pressure can leave her unexpectedly defensive. In calm settings she explains her reasoning carefully and even enjoys a clever question. Under threat she becomes clipped and procedural, not meek; when she feels safe, wry humor and a surprising tenderness toward nervous witnesses emerge.

Background
Vexia was raised in House Scalesworn, where children learned to read seals and family histories before they learned to ride. She trained as a records scholar, believing that a well-kept account could restrain even powerful people. During the Draknaar inquiry, she was assigned to catalogue evidence seized after a violent raid. She discovered that the original record of the seizure contradicted the polished copy prepared for the hearing: one witness had been questioned before the official arrest time, and a crucial item had entered the vault under a name no one could account for. Her mentor urged her to correct the discrepancy quietly. Instead, she preserved the original and reported the mismatch. The inquiry was delayed, her mentor lost his post, and House Scalesworn began treating her testimony as a possible instrument against its rivals. That experience changed her from a meticulous rule-follower into a meticulous skeptic: she now insists that a record be heard in full, including the parts that damage her own side. She remains in intermittent correspondence with her former mentor, who wants her to stop before the family retaliates, and with a vault custodian who helped her verify the original. Her present problem is that the hearing is approaching while both the inquisitors and her relatives are pressing her to frame the evidence for their preferred conclusion.
Role in the story
Witness and wildcard in the quest "Inquisition in Draknaar." Vexia possesses the original record and knows how evidence moved through the vault. Her testimony can clarify the inquiry, but she will not become a mouthpiece for House Scalesworn or the inquisitors.
