Sister Hush
Sister Hush
At the table
Voice
Her voice begins with a dry, deliberate intake, followed by words shaped with the care of someone who once led long prayers over smoke and stone. Years of chapel incense have left a slight rasp at the back of her throat. She speaks at an even pace, but anger makes her consonants clipped and hard, like a tool striking a workbench.
She forms words carefully, as if each one has to pass through a narrow doorway. Her speech is plain and workmanlike, with religious vocabulary used precisely rather than ornamentally. She often begins after a deliberate intake through her nose, a habit from years of checking candle smoke and incense draft.
Speech patterns
How to play them
She offers useful, limited help first, then asks what the other person knows about the chapel, its seal, or forbidden rites. She is candid about ordinary risks but evasive about the cost of her bargains. Earn her trust by treating the dead as people rather than clues.
Goal
Discover how to restore the chapel seal without repeating the sacrifice that killed Yemi.
Motivation
She wants to make one choice that protects the living without betraying the dead.
Appearance
Sister Hush has a narrow, weathered face and a stillness that makes her seem to have been waiting before anyone entered the room. Her scalp is shaved in meticulous, even passes, with a faint fringe of silver stubble kept at exactly the same length. She wears no cosmetics, but polishes her nails until they catch the light. She moves with a careful, economical step, as if each footfall might disturb something sleeping beneath the floor. People often notice her deliberate grooming before they notice the ink-dark stains on her fingertips.
Clothing
A patched charcoal traveling robe over a plain linen shirt, tied with a narrow cord once used to fasten a priest's stole. Her cuffs are carefully mended, and a little pouch of chalk hangs at her waist.
Body language
She keeps her chin level and her shoulders square, but her thumb rubs the edge of her sleeve whenever someone mentions the crypt. Before answering a difficult question, she draws a small, deliberate breath through her nose, as if testing the air for smoke.

Personality
12 traits and drivesHush is compassionate in practical ways, quietly mending a stranger's coat or leaving food outside a sickroom, yet she can be brutally unsentimental when someone asks her to abandon the seal investigation. In calm company she listens longer than she speaks. Under pressure, she becomes exacting and impatient, not loud. She distrusts grand declarations of faith but still performs small acts of devotion when no one is watching.

Combat
AC 11 · HP 9 · 30 ft.Sister Hush is not a trained combatant. She tries to keep distance, use The Unwelcome Syllable to interrupt an aggressor's approach, and escape toward a doorway or crowded place. She will use her walking stick only when cornered, and will never endanger bystanders to protect herself.

Background
Sister Hush served for thirty years at the Chapel of the Last Door, where she kept its burial records and tended a seal said to hold a nameless presence beneath the crypt. During a fever winter, the chapel's young bell keeper, Yemi, became trapped below when the seal cracked. Hush could hear him calling through the stone, but the senior clergy ordered her to keep the rite intact. She obeyed until the calls stopped. That failure changed her: she abandoned the chapel, and began seeking knowledge wherever it could be bought, including from Tsul'rekshi, a presence whose answers arrive with a price. Hush now lives above a shuttered bell foundry on Bellfounders' Row. She is still in touch with Borge, the chapel's aging mason, who sends her sketches of the seal's spreading fractures. The clergy want her silenced before her inquiries draw attention to their old decision. Her current problem is that each answer from Tsul'rekshi makes her more capable of repairing the seal and less certain that she should.
