Jorren Kest
Jorren Kest
At the table
“the last duty”
Voice
A clear, dry-edged voice with a little rasp from winter air and long hours outdoors. He draws breath through his nose before speaking, as if taking the measure of a room. His vowels retain a faint northern lilt from his parents, but city work has trained him to project cleanly above a crowd.
His words carry the clipped rhythm of a man used to giving instructions over street noise. He favors plain verbs, concrete choices, and names over titles. When he is relaxed, a dry northern humor appears; when angry, he speaks in short, exact sentences and does not soften the content.
Speech patterns
How to play them
He is courteous without being ingratiating and offers a clear path to cooperation. He respects people who keep their word, protects those who are outmatched, and is quick to recognize a bluff. If the characters treat him as a person rather than a weapon, he may admit that he is frightened by his own changing instincts. He will not reveal the secret casually, but a genuine threat to his parents or a trusted guard can force his hand.
Goal
Discover the source and limits of his white-dragon bloodline before it reshapes his judgment, while keeping his parents and company out of the consequences.
Motivation
He wants to remain a decent son and dependable guard, but the awakening dragon blood rewards certainty, possession, and the belief that the strong should decide what happens.
Appearance
Tall enough to make doorways seem meaner than they are, Jorren has a long, carefully held posture and the economical movement of someone accustomed to standing watch over a crowd. His skin is pale with a wind-reddened cast across the nose and ears. Pale blond hair grows in coarse, almost colorless strands, usually shoved back from his brow but never fully tamed. A faint, narrow scar rests on his face, just below the left cheekbone. In dim light his ice-blue eyes catch the smallest glint, their pupils narrowing to vertical slits when he is angry or testing his emerging power. Fine white scales sometimes surface at his temples and along the backs of his hands, like frost caught in the grain of skin. He leaves an impression of warmth held behind a barred gate: attentive, composed, and not safe to mistake for gentle. Unexpectedly, he is an excellent mender of torn clothes and quietly repairs the uniforms of fellow guards.
Clothing
A charcoal wool coat with a high collar, close-fitting leather gloves, and a plain, weather-darkened breastplate beneath. His belt carries a serviceable dagger and a small pouch of chalk. He wears no polished badge, only a stitched strip bearing the Ninth-and-Fourth Company's survey-mark insignia.
Body language
He squares his shoulders when taking responsibility and angles his body between danger and whoever seems most vulnerable. His thumb repeatedly checks the seam of his left glove, where scales have begun to show. When he is holding back anger, his jaw works once and his eyes fix on the other person's hands.

Personality
15 traits and drivesJorren is warm in ordinary company and stern when a boundary is crossed. He remembers small kindnesses and repays them, yet he can turn abruptly clinical when he decides someone is dangerous. He dislikes cruelty for its own sake but has a troubling capacity to treat violence as a clean solution. In private he is curious and almost boyishly excited by magic; in public he hides that curiosity behind a watchman's discipline.
- Alignment
- Lawful neutral, with a growing and unsettling appetite for dominance

Combat
AC 15 · HP 32 · 30 ft.He begins by controlling space and separating threats, using ray of frost to slow pursuers and hold a line. Against a dangerous foe he uses blindness or a twinned hold person when the opportunity is worth the sorcery points. He saves shield for a hit that would seriously injure him or break his concentration. He prefers to take captives, but if ordered to execute someone he makes the act fast and does not posture.

Equipment
- Fitted breastplate (armor)A fitted breastplate worn beneath a dark wool coat. His unarmored draconic resilience provides AC 15 when he is not wearing armor; the breastplate is carried for situations where he expects physical combat and would otherwise replace that AC with its own armor calculation.

- Ninth-and-Fourth patch (insignia)A company insignia sewn inside his coat, marked with the paired survey numbers.
- Coded notebook (personal)A small notebook where he records spell tests in shorthand.

Background
Jorren was born to Hedd and Sava, northerners who came south to Baldur's Gate with little more than a handcart, a few family recipes, and a stubborn belief that a city offered more choices than a blizzard. His father repaired nets and awnings; his mother found steady work washing linens. Jorren grew up carrying bundles through the Lower City and learned early that a calm voice could stop a quarrel before a blade came out. As a young man he joined the Ninth-and-Fourth Company, a band of hired swords whose name came from two adjacent marks on an old military survey. He became their enforcer because he could talk people into surrender and, when that failed, make the ending swift. His draconic nature first surfaced during a winter escort beyond the city: a wounded companion was trapped beneath a toppled wagon, and Jorren's panic blew frost across the mud and locked a pursuing bandit to a wheel. The power saved the companion, but Jorren saw fear in the survivor's face afterward. Since then, he has secretly tested his bloodline in abandoned storehouses, learning the reach and limits of his magic without telling the company or his parents. His employer, Thes, wants him to take more public execution work to frighten rival crews; Jorren resents being made into a symbol. He sends a portion of every pay packet to his parents, who believe his work is dangerous but do not know how strange it has become.
Role in the story
A city-side ally, antagonist, or moral pressure point whose lawful work puts him in the party's path. He can provide access to mercenary networks and the city's rougher streets. His concealed bloodline and growing capacity for cold violence create a personal crisis that can develop alongside the characters' dealings with the company.
