At the table
Voice
A dry, breath-driven rasp with crisp consonants and an occasional German vowel shaping his English. The sound carries the economy of someone used to giving instructions over noise; his sudden laugh is warmer and more open than his manner suggests.
His voice has a dry, breath-driven rasp, with consonants clipped by military habit and German vowels surfacing when he is tired. He speaks plainly and tends to put the important noun at the end of a sentence, like he is delivering a final instruction. His laugh is abrupt and startlingly warm; a moment later he may return to a hard, level stare.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Approach him with a concrete purpose and treat both halves of his life as real. Respect his service without flattering him. He responds poorly to mockery, but a sincere question about his family can interrupt a spiral of grievance. If the outsider's influence is active, give him a choice that lets him protect someone without exacting revenge.
Goal
Find the source of the outsider's influence, end its hold over his grudges, and return to Anja and the girls without making Peter's life a battleground.
Motivation
Keep his family safe, hold together the promises attached to both his names, and prove that his anger still belongs to him.
Appearance
Nils looks like a soldier who has been living out of a duffel and refusing to admit it. His black barrel-cut trousers crease sharply at the knees but sag slightly at the waist; his black boots are scrubbed clean, with fresh polish worked into every seam. A red, gold, and black shirt with a baroque pattern sits under a black wool coat from Anja, whose cuffs he has repeatedly repaired with careful, nearly invisible stitches. The coat is the one item he fusses over, smoothing its lapels whenever a conversation turns personal. In his fae mien, his mouth seems too wide for his face, with blunt, uneven teeth and a redcap's unsettling appetite made visible in the way his jaw works even when he is not eating. He moves with parade-ground economy until anger hits, when he leans in as if the other person has already lost ground. The unexpected detail is his immaculate boots: he will tolerate a torn shirt before he lets mud dry on them.
Clothing
Black barrel-cut trousers, polished black boots, a red, gold, and black patterned shirt, and a black wool coat from Anja. He protects the coat from rain and grime, repairs its cuffs neatly, and wears his wedding ring whenever duty and circumstance allow.
Body language
He stands squarely and keeps his hands busy with his coat cuffs or wedding ring. When listening carefully, he stops moving altogether; when anger takes hold, he steps into another person's space and holds eye contact with a challenge in his jaw.

Distinguishing features
Personality
16 traits and drivesHe is disciplined enough to wait out a bad situation but too proud to let an insult go unanswered. Around his daughters he is patient and unexpectedly playful; with strangers he is blunt, suspicious, and quick to test boundaries. With fellow changelings he uses jokes and intimidation to avoid being emotionally legible. When tired or under the outsider's influence, he treats a small slight as proof of a larger betrayal.
- Alignment
- Unseelie, Autumn Court; alignment is not a Changeling: The Dreaming statistic.

Combat
HP 0 · Use the movement rules and rating appropriate to the chosen Changeling: The Dreaming edition; no separate speed value assigned. He uses training and cover rather than theatrical bravado, preferring a firearm when his mortal life permits and close-range violence when the fae situation turns personal. He tries to protect companions, but the outsider's influence can make retaliation more important than a safe withdrawal. Redcap Birthrights describe his kith, not extra damage or immunity.

Background
Nils Kauffman is a German-American U.S. Army serviceman who has spent years keeping his mortal life and his changeling life in separate compartments. In the Dreaming, he is Burke von Bracken, a Redcap whose name he uses like a second uniform. His first marriage ended before he built a household with Anja, his German Unseelie Slaugh wife. His older son, Peter, is back in the States, distant enough that every unanswered message feels like a verdict. Nils fears Peter may be a changeling too, but has never found a way to ask without making the boy feel watched. With Anja he has two daughters, named for Edelweiss and Violet in German; they are his tenderest attachment and the reason he still wears his wedding ring whenever he can. A formative turning point came when a bitter dispute in his fae life spilled into a family reunion: he watched a harmless insult become a feud that frightened the children. Since then he has tried to keep his anger on the other side of the mask, with uneven success. In 2026 he is on leave with Kyle Svenson, an Unseelie Winter Court troll, and Willie Woods, an Unseelie Winter Court satyr. An unexplained outsider's influence is feeding his petty grievances and turning old slights into urgent calls for revenge. He is trying to find its source without admitting how much of the cruelty already feels like his own.
Role in the story
A volatile ally whose double life can bring military discipline and Redcap menace into the same scene. His fear for Peter and devotion to Anja and their daughters give the players leverage to help him, while the unexplained influence can turn a useful companion into a dangerous source of escalation.
