Appearance
Sal Veretto is a thin, ruggedly handsome human with the weathered face of someone who has slept beneath bridges, in bell towers, and once beneath a royal banquet table. His full head of messy brown hair repeatedly falls across his eyes, and he pushes it aside with the same impatient motion whether he is thinking, lying, or preparing to strike. A constant haze leaks from his collar, cuffs, and mouth, curling around him in slow ribbons that smell faintly of wet charcoal and burnt cedar. He moves with a thief's careful quiet, but when startled he becomes startlingly still, like a statue abandoned in a chimney. His hands are long-fingered and scarred, with soot embedded permanently in the creases. The contradictory impression he leaves is that of a dangerous fugitive who looks strangely gentle when asleep, with his smoke gathering around him like a blanket.
“His voice is low, dry, and slightly hoarse, with a river-district accent softened by years of imitating nobles, guards, and sailors. He speaks quickly when explaining an escape plan and very slowly when telling a lie.”

Distinguishing Features
A pale burn scar circles his left wrist like a bracelet.
His right eyebrow is split by a narrow scar from a failed rooftop escape.
Smoke escapes from his nostrils when he is irritated, even when he is holding his breath.
The tips of his fingers are permanently gray, as though stained with graphite.
His shadow sometimes appears a heartbeat behind his movements when his elemental power is agitated.
Voice
“Low, dry, and smoke-roughened, with a quick river-district cadence that becomes courtly when he is frightened.”
Clothing
A worn black duster coat with patched elbows, a tan shirt yellowed by smoke, narrow charcoal trousers, soft leather boots, and a faded blue scarf once belonging to Sir Odran. The coat contains hidden pockets sewn into the lining and smells of rain, iron, and old fireplaces.
Body Language
Sal rarely stands fully upright. He leans as if listening to a distant fire, keeps one shoulder turned toward the nearest exit, and lets his hands hang loose until the instant he needs them. When someone mentions knighthood, the smoke around his fingers tightens into little rings.
