Appearance
Senator Hestasion has a narrow, foxlike face, a long nose, pinched lips, and grey hair brushed carefully back from a widening brow. His body is slight and soft around the middle, yet he moves with quick, darting precision, as if every doorway might close behind him. His skin is pale olive, marked by fine red veins around the nose and a crescent scar beneath his left eye. He leaves the impression of a tired scholar until he smiles, when the expression becomes bright, hungry, and strangely boyish. The unexpected contradiction is his hands, broad-knuckled and callused from years of practicing with a staff, despite the delicate theatricality of the rest of him.
“His voice is soft, rapid, and smoke-dry, with a cultivated senatorial cadence. He drops into a conspiratorial whisper for obvious statements and raises his volume only when making a claim he cannot support.”

Distinguishing Features
A crescent scar beneath his left eye, usually hidden beneath a touch of pale cosmetic powder.
A silver caduceus clasp filed nearly smooth, suggesting he fears being recognized as Mercury's heir while exploiting the association.
A habit of smoothing his toga immediately after making a threat.
His shadow sometimes seems to lean a fraction ahead of him when he lies, a subtle supernatural sign of Mercury's blood.
He carries a small bronze grain measure and rubs its rim whenever someone mentions reform.
Voice
“A dry, papery baritone that becomes silky when he is lying and shrill when someone else gives an order.”
Clothing
He wears an immaculate white senatorial toga with a narrow crimson border even during travel, rain, combat, or private meals. The fabric is heavily starched and smells faintly of rosemary oil and smoke. Beneath it he wears a quilted tunic, strapped sandals reinforced for marching, and a bronze signet ring showing a winged heel. His toga is pinned with a small silver clasp shaped like a caduceus, though the symbol has been filed until it is difficult to identify.
Body Language
He holds his chin high while keeping his shoulders slightly hunched, a posture that attempts to project authority while protecting his throat. His fingers worry at the edge of his toga whenever someone else commands a room. During lies, he touches two fingers to his breast as though swearing an oath, then shifts his weight toward the nearest exit.
