Appearance
Vianne Reed is a slight young woman with a permanently forward-leaning posture, as if the next important fact is always about to escape just beyond her reach. Her messy blonde hair is gathered with a broken wooden quill, though loose strands cling to her cheeks in ink-darkened curls. Deep circles bruise the skin beneath her bright, wide-eyed gaze. She moves in sudden, birdlike bursts, crossing a room in three quick steps before freezing completely to study a crack in the wall. Her fingers are stained with blue-black ink, charcoal, and faint metallic dust. She leaves an impression of frantic scholarly brilliance, yet her hands are unexpectedly gentle, handling brittle relics with the care of someone cradling sleeping infants.
“Fast, precise, and lightly breathless, with sudden pauses when she realizes she has revealed too much. Her voice becomes a near whisper whenever she discusses the chamber beneath Azimut.”

Distinguishing Features
A broken wooden quill is permanently caught in her hair.
Her fingertips are stained with ink that cannot be fully washed away.
A thin crescent scar runs from the corner of her mouth to her jaw, caused by falling bronze debris in the observatory collapse.
She wears her mentor's cracked brass spectacles on a cord around her neck, though the lenses are too strong for her eyes.
Her shadow sometimes appears to be holding a book even when her hands are empty.
Voice
“A quick, papery alto with a dry rasp from too much dust and too little sleep. When excited, she speaks faster than most people can follow, then repeats the final sentence very slowly as if translating herself.”
Clothing
Several oversized academic sweaters are layered beneath a patched canvas scholar's robe. The robe is crowded with loose parchment scraps, charcoal rubbings, wax tablets, magnifying lenses, folded maps, and tiny labeled specimen envelopes. One sleeve has been repaired with red thread in the shape of a branching river.
Body Language
Vianne hunches over documents, rocks subtly on the balls of her feet, and gestures with whatever object is nearest, usually a quill, ruler, or bone stylus. When the buried chamber is mentioned, her shoulders lock, her lower lip disappears between her teeth, and her hands become perfectly motionless.
