Rodney Krzobá
Species
Awakened dire rat
Appearance
Rodney is a medium-sized awakened dire rat with the compact, spring-loaded body of a fighting animal and the restless eyes of someone always measuring escape routes. His fur grows in dense, uneven plates of charcoal gray and rust brown, slick along the shoulders from alchemical oils and soft around the belly like damp moss. Livid green eyes stare without pupils, glowing more brightly when he smells fear. Small white flowers, blue-black berries, and tiny curling leaves grow from his spine, haunches, and tail, fed by moon-touched sap beneath his skin. He stands with his weight balanced on the balls of his feet, head low, shoulders bunched, as if the ground itself has insulted him. Despite his furious expression, he is fastidious about grooming the flowers behind his ears.
“A rough, breathy voice threaded with clicks and angry squeaks. Rodney speaks quickly when excited, slows to a deliberate growl when threatening someone, and drops into an unexpectedly tender whisper around injured animals.”

Distinguishing Features
Pupil-less green eyes that brighten in darkness and flare during rage
Clusters of living flowers and tart berries growing through his fur
A tail wrapped in copper wire that jingles whenever he is lying
A clean, sweet scent of crushed mint beneath the sharper smells of acid and wet fur
A habit of shifting his weight forward whenever he waits, as if he is perpetually about to launch himself
Voice
“A gravelly contralto rasp produced through a narrow throat, with sudden squeaks at the ends of sentences and a faint wet hiss whenever his acid glands are active.”
Clothing
A battered crimson harness fitted with brass buckles, padded stirrups, a tiny rear saddle for Gabbie, and a weatherproof green scarf knotted beneath his jaw. His harness carries glass ampoules, dried herbs, and a stitched patch showing a goblin hand gripping a rat's paw.
Body Language
Rodney rarely stands squarely. He leans forward with his hindquarters ready to spring, one claw lifted slightly off the ground, and his tail making slow, irritated punctuation behind him. When Gabbie speaks, he angles his whole body toward her even if his eyes remain fixed on a threat. When he trusts someone, he places one warm paw against their boot and leaves it there.
