Sava
Sava
At the table
Voice
A weather-roughened voice with a dry rasp, a slight salt-thick catch on certain consonants, and the carrying force of someone used to calling orders across a deck. Her laugh is a sudden, gravelly bark.
She speaks in clipped, workmanlike phrases shaped by years of shouting over wind and rigging. Her sayings are practical and often nautical, but she rarely embellishes a story unless she is trying to comfort someone.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Sava offers practical help before asking intrusive questions, but expects people to be direct with her. Respect her staff and customers and she will share useful harbor knowledge. Threaten someone under her roof and she becomes immovable.
Goal
Keep Every Fancy independent, clear its debt, and make it a place where sailors in trouble can safely ask for help.
Motivation
To turn an old act of disobedience into a lasting place of safety, without letting guilt make every decision for her.
Appearance
Sava has a sun-browned face, a broad jaw, and small, close-set teeth that show when she laughs: her upper incisors overlap like badly stowed cutlery. She chews slowly and deliberately, never taking her eyes off a room for long. Her salt-stiff hair is tied back with a strip of sailcloth, and she moves with a sailor's rolling balance even on a dry floor. Her work clothes are patched at the elbows and stained with spice and lamp oil, but her battered red waistcoat is scrubbed and mended with almost ceremonial care. It is an unexpected finery for a tavernkeeper who claims not to care about appearances.
Clothing
A salt-faded linen shirt, patched dark trousers, a canvas apron with a loop for a knife, and a carefully scrubbed red waistcoat repaired at both cuffs.
Body language
She stands with knees loose and shoulders squared, balancing instinctively as if the floor might pitch. When listening, she tips her head toward the speaker but keeps her gaze moving around the room. Her laugh is broad and shows her crowded teeth; when she is worried, she presses her jaw shut and rubs the waistcoat cuff.

Background
Sava spent twenty years as a deckhand and cook aboard the merchant brig Quick Mercy, learning to read weather, hunger, and mutiny before they announced themselves. During a storm off the Gull Coast, her captain ordered the crew to cut loose a boat full of shipwreck survivors to keep the brig afloat. Sava disobeyed, helped haul the survivors aboard, and was put ashore with no wages when the ship reached port. One rescued child, now a grown harbor pilot named Jori, still visits Every Fancy and insists Sava saved more than a life that night. Sava bought the tavern with borrowed money and hard-won favors. Now she gives sailors a place to sleep when they have nowhere else, while the lender who financed the purchase demands repayment and a dockside gang pressures her to let them use the cellar. She wants to keep the tavern independent without turning it into a refuge that gets everyone killed.
Role in the story
A grounded harbor contact, source of local knowledge, and potential ally whose tavern sits at the intersection of debt, old smuggling, and dockside coercion.

- Faction
- No formal faction. She is on familiar terms with harbor pilots and working sailors, and resists the Low Whistle crew's attempts to claim her tavern.
