Kiv
Kiv
At the table
Voice
A low, warm baritone with a faint rasp, like gravel washed smooth by water.
Low, even, and unhurried, with the clipped clarity of someone accustomed to giving instructions over the noise of water and tools.
Speech patterns
How to play them
He responds well to directness, useful work, and anyone who notices the needs of the people around them. He distrusts grand promises. If the party offers a concrete way to evacuate residents or relieve the sluice pressure, he will share what he knows and stand with them. If they threaten Samet or endanger civilians, Kiv becomes immovable.
Goal
Open the pressure-swollen sluice before the lower district floods, while finding a way to spare the orchard above and keep Samet from being caught in the evacuation.
Motivation
Make the lower canal district safe without allowing another official's timetable to decide whose lives are expendable.
Appearance
Kiv is a broad, steady-looking man with russet-brown skin and a close-cropped cap of wiry black curls. His heavy brows and careful, patient gaze make him seem like a kindly schoolmaster until he moves: then his weight shifts with the quiet speed of someone used to catching falling masonry. His work coat is patched with neat squares of sailcloth, but its sleeves are comically too short, exposing pale bands of wrist. A tiny brass bell is sewn inside the left cuff, where it gives a soft chime whenever he raises his arm. He leaves the impression of a safe pair of hands, right up until he blocks a doorway without seeming to try.
Clothing
A faded green work coat with careful sailcloth patches, short sleeves, a linen shirt, a tool belt, and boots whose soles are wrapped in quiet strips of leather. One cuff is freshly mended and conspicuously over-cared-for.
Body language
He keeps one hand lightly against nearby stone or timber, as if feeling for a change in its mood. When worried, he squares up the cuffs of his too-short sleeves and checks the hidden bell.

Personality
11 traits and drivesKiv is patient with strangers and exacting with those he loves. He gives away labor freely, but keeps small emotional accounts: who visited Samet, who remembered a promise, who left without saying goodbye. In a crisis he is calm and decisive; when the danger passes, he becomes awkwardly silent. He welcomes honest disagreement but bristles at anyone treating workers as replaceable.

Combat
HP 7Kiv tries to keep combat away from bystanders and fragile structures. He uses the prybar to pull a dangerous attacker away from an ally, then plants himself in a choke point. He would rather restrain, disarm, or drive opponents off than kill them.

Background
Kiv was raised in the canal district of Merrowick, where his mother repaired sluice gates and his father kept the night watch. He learned stonework from his aunt Nura, a patient mason who taught him to listen for hollow places by tapping walls with a spoon. At twenty-six, Kiv was supervising repairs beneath the old counting house when a hurried order from the city magistrate sent workers into a cracked flood tunnel. Kiv heard the warning knock in the stone, but obeyed the order to keep the work moving. The tunnel collapsed. His younger brother, Samet, survived but lost the use of one leg; three other workers did not. Kiv left the guild and spent years helping families forced from unsafe buildings, often refusing payment. Now he maintains the neglected lower sluices with his former apprentice, Edda, while arguing with the magistrate’s office over a sealed drainage gate. The gate is swelling under pressure, and opening it will save the district but flood the wealthy orchard above. Samet wants Kiv to stop putting the whole city ahead of his own family. Kiv has not yet found a way to answer him.
