Court Scholar

Laila bint-Tariq

0·Woman·Medium
Lawful Neutral, increasingly troubled by the difference between lawful procedure and actual justice

Species

Human

Appearance

Laila is a narrow-shouldered woman with a composed, almost ink-drawn silhouette. Her movements are economical and measured, as though every step has been counted against a ledger. Fine sun lines radiate from her eyes, while a pale scar crosses the left side of her scalp and disappears beneath her hair. Her hands are stained permanently blue at the fingertips from archival dyes, and the nails of her right hand are cut short for turning damp pages. She leaves behind the impression of cool rain on hot stone, yet her expression can become unexpectedly fierce when someone misquotes a law. The contradictory element is her smile: it is warm, genuine, and almost girlish, despite the severe court robes and the grim discoveries she carries.

Height5 feet 4 inches
BuildLean and slightly stooped from years spent over low writing tables, with wiry strength in her forearms
EyesDeep hazel with gold flecks, usually narrowed in concentration
HairBlack threaded with premature silver, braided tightly and pinned with a chipped lapis comb
SkinWarm olive-brown, weathered lightly by sun and dust

Her voice is quiet enough to make listeners lean closer. She speaks in carefully balanced clauses, rarely uses contractions, and pauses before names as if checking their legal weight.”

Distinguishing Features

Permanent blue stains on her fingertips

A thin scar across the left scalp from the night her father's water gauge was sabotaged

A brass seal bearing a pre-Sultanate crescent over three ripples

A habit of tilting her head toward distant water channels when thinking

A small, perfectly round burn mark on her left palm from a heated legal seal

Voice

A low, dry contralto with a faint rasp, like a reed pen dragged across rough parchment

Clothing

A charcoal court robe layered over a sand-colored scholar's tunic, with narrow sleeves fastened by copper clasps. Her sash bears the faded green thread of the Old Measures Court. She wears soft leather shoes for silent movement across archive floors and carries a waterproof satchel made from treated fish skin and stitched sailcloth.

Body Language

She keeps one hand resting on her waterproof satchel and angles her body toward exits, archives, and witnesses at the same time. When uncertain, she rubs the blue stains on her fingertips together. When truly frightened, she becomes perfectly still.
