Ximker
Ximker
At the table
Voice
A dry baritone with a faint rasp, like a stone dragged across pottery. When the patron speaks through him, a second voice arrives half a heartbeat late, whispering from somewhere below the listener's feet.
His speech is precise, low, and rhythmically measured. He often leaves a pause before important words, as though testing whether the room agrees with him. His humor is dry, his insults are strangely courteous, and his rare anger makes his voice quieter rather than louder.

How to play them
Ximker is helpful but difficult to know. He offers food, directions, minor repairs, and useful warnings before he offers trust. Players who respect his boundaries can earn his loyalty quickly. Questions about his monastery or father make him evasive, while kindness toward laborers, children, or frightened animals causes his guarded manner to soften.
Goal
Find the buried entrance through which the Listening Root intends to enter the surface world, then determine whether to seal it, bargain with it, or step through.
Motivation
To turn the guilt of his childhood mistake into a duty that protects people who have no knowledge of astral wars, ancient patrons, or githzerai politics.
Appearance
Ximker looks carved rather than born, all narrow planes, sharp wrists, and long fingers that seem slightly too deliberate in their movements. His skin has a muted yellow-gray tone, textured with fine grey spots along his temples and collarbones. He walks with a careful forward lean, as if listening to the ground through the soles of his feet. His face is severe at first glance, but his smile is unexpectedly broad and boyish. He keeps one shoulder wrapped in a faded red wool shawl even in warm weather. His most unsettling feature is a small patch of ordinary warm-brown skin over his heart, a mark he conceals whenever possible. Years of road travel and supernatural investigations have left him more weathered, and the shawl is now reinforced with discreet stitching and protective charms.
Clothing
A smoke-brown linen tunic, fitted dark trousers, soft leather climbing shoes, a faded red highland-style wool shawl, and a narrow bronze belt hung with measuring spoons, chalk, and prayer cords. A light crossbow rides on his back. His sleeves are patched with scraps of blue cloth marked with githzerai geometric notation. His travel-worn gear is now better maintained and includes discreet protective stitching.
Body language
Ximker keeps his hands folded behind his back when calm, but spreads his fingers wide when lying. He rarely turns his head fully toward a speaker, preferring to angle one ear toward them. In combat, he becomes almost still, with only his eyes and fingertips moving.

Personality
19 traits and drivesXimker is patient with strangers, sharp with friends, and almost tender toward anyone who works with their hands. He dislikes grand speeches but secretly longs for someone to recognize the scale of what he carries. He is generous with food and information, yet guarded with names, memories, and promises. In a crowd he appears mild and observant. Alone with a trusted companion, he becomes dryly funny and surprisingly playful. When confronted by authority, he grows formal and immovable. When someone vulnerable is threatened, his restraint burns away and he speaks with the calm certainty of a man who has already accepted the cost of violence.

Combat
AC 14 · HP 38 · 30 feetXimker begins at range, using Devil's Sight to exploit darkness and eldritch blast to strike two targets or concentrate fire on a dangerous foe. He uses hex against durable targets, shield when a melee attacker closes, and arms of Hadar when surrounded. He favors terrain with stone floors, walls, or buried foundations so the Listening Root can hinder pursuit. He retreats before allies do, but only to create a safer angle from which to cover them.

Background
Ximker was born in a hidden githzerai waystation built into a cliff above an abandoned imperial road. His mother taught him to read the movement of dust, while his father repaired astral skiffs and believed every problem could be solved by discipline. At eleven, Ximker followed a sound beneath the monastery, a slow knocking that matched the rhythm of his own heartbeat. He found a root growing through solid rock, black as wet ink and covered in tiny silver eyes. When he touched it, the monastery's protective wards failed for one breath, allowing raiders from the Astral Plane to enter. Ximker survived, but his father disappeared and three elders were killed. The elders called him cursed. His mother called him alive and sent him away before the others could decide his fate. He eventually reached the material world and found work in a mountain town bakery, where he learned that kneading dough quieted the knocking in his skull. His patron is the intelligence inside the Listening Root, an ancient subterranean consciousness that claims to remember the first footsteps ever made. Ximker now travels between settlements, secretly tracing the root's symbols wherever earthquakes, disappearances, or impossible wells appear. He wants to learn whether the entity is guiding him toward a salvation buried beneath the world, or merely teaching him how to open a door.
Role in the story
Ximker can serve as a morally complicated guide, a source of information about githzerai culture, or an uneasy ally against an underground cult. His investigation can draw the players into a conflict between his former monastery, his missing father, and the Listening Root. He may ask the party to escort him to a sealed ruin, recover an astral compass, or help decide whether an ancient entity should be destroyed or heard.
