At the table

Voice

A dry, rasping whisper with a crackle like embers shifting under a draft. The sound seems to emerge through the furnace grille as much as through his jaw; its rhythm carries the measured cadence of a foundry master used to being heard over machinery.

His words rasp from somewhere behind the iron furnace, edged with the dry crackle of burning coal. He shapes consonants carefully and lets each sentence settle like hot metal into a mold. When angered, he does not soften or hush; he speaks faster, with the clipped certainty of a foreman calling a dangerous shift.

Speech patterns

Calls destruction a kind of instruction and asks what a person learned while burning.
Uses foundry metaphors to describe loyalty, grief, and politics.
Addresses a visitor’s fear directly, as if it were an engineering flaw to be corrected.
When discussing his former life, replaces names with job titles and never explains why.

How to play them

Dheskar bargains in knowledge, survival, or access to forbidden foundry techniques. He offers real terms and honors them when doing so advances his plans. He is curious about people who resist him, but treats any appeal to mercy as evidence of weakness. Characters who mention the whistles or his former foundry life can briefly draw his attention away from immediate threats.

Goal

Turn the Howling Caldera into the first of many sanctuaries where death is replaced by a permanent, furnace-bound existence, then spread that transformation beyond Karr-Vazhar.

Motivation

He believes suffering can be made permanent, and therefore meaningless, if every living thing is remade into an unfeeling vessel. Beneath that doctrine is a terror of discovering that his immortality is an elaborate form of death.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Dheskar’s charred skeleton hangs inside a restless veil of black ash, the particles spiraling against the air as if drawn toward the furnace bolted into his rib cage. Sickly green-white flame flickers behind its iron grilles, painting the surrounding stone with a wavering, bone-pale sheen. Obsidian crown-shards rise from his brow, while his ceremonial ash-cloth drags in ragged strips that whisper over the floor. His jaw is long and furnace-hinged, crowded with square, glassy teeth. When he laughs, they click together like cooling slag. He occupies a room as if it were a foundry floor claimed by right, forcing others to give ground without seeming to notice. Unexpectedly, he collects tiny clay whistles and keeps one tucked among the furnace’s iron bands.

Clothing

Tattered ceremonial robes woven from heat-darkened ash-cloth, secured with corroded iron clasps and crowned with splintered obsidian. The hems are powdered black from the Caldera’s ash.

Body language

He stands too close, bending his skull toward whoever speaks as though measuring the heat of their breath. His hands move with the deliberate economy of a smith setting a tool. When pleased, he opens his jaw in a clicking grin; when frustrated, ash streams from his sleeves and pools around his feet.

He carries tiny clay whistles, an incongruous keepsake among his obsidian regalia.

Personality

14 traits and drives

Dheskar is intellectually patient but emotionally possessive. He admires craft and disciplined labor, yet regards the living as wasteful material. He can show an unsettling tenderness toward the dead, especially those who worked beside him, while responding to a living person’s pain with cold curiosity. In private, the clay whistles make him contemplative; under pressure, his certainty turns into furious, sermon-like insistence.

Alignment
Chaotic evil

Quirks

He taps each doorframe twice before entering, as if testing the soundness of a furnace wall.
He asks the names of the dead after a battle and remembers them with unnerving accuracy.
He keeps a clay whistle in the furnace grille and sometimes listens to its warped note.
He will not step on a dropped tool, even when it belongs to an enemy.
He describes a person’s mood as a temperature, then waits for them to correct him.

Habits

Lets petitioners speak until they mistake patience for mercy, then asks the one question that exposes what they concealed.
Studies a defeated enemy’s tools before deciding whether to destroy, recruit, or raise them.
Orders the Coven to recover fallen bodies after battle, though his reason for each recovery is kept private.
When unsettled, presses a clay whistle against the furnace grille and listens to its faint, cracked note.

Traits · 4

He listens carefully to practical expertise, even from someone he intends to kill.
He treats the dead as worthy of names and the living as temporary tools.
He can be genuinely moved by a handmade object, then demand its maker’s loyalty.
He welcomes debate until it threatens the furnace’s authority over the Coven.

Flaws · 3

He mistakes obedience for devotion and cannot accept that his followers may have their own ends.
His certainty that mortality is a defect blinds him to the value of change and choice.
The soul-furnace is both his source of power and a dangerous point of failure.

Fears · 3

That the furnace preserves only a copy of his mind, while the man he was died in the magma chamber.
That the former apprentice who escaped can expose the weakness in his binding.
That the furnace will go cold and leave him conscious, powerless, and mortal.

Wants and needs · 4

Keep the soul-furnace intact and under his control.
Find the escaped apprentice before the weakness in his binding is discovered.
Recover the knowledge needed to remake the Howling Caldera’s dead as permanent servants.
Learn whether the consciousness inside the furnace is a flaw to remove or the last remnant of his lost workers.

Combat

AC 17 · HP 210 · 30 ft.

Dheskar opens from range with control spells or a Cinder-Soul Detonation, then uses legendary movement to isolate spellcasters and wounded targets. He keeps enemies inside the furnace aura while avoiding close combat with those who can disrupt his core. If pressed, he uses wall spells and teleportation to force opponents through hazardous ground. He retreats only if the soul-furnace itself is threatened.

Animate Dead (level 3, necromancy). Dheskar animates dead bodies as undead servants, according to the spell’s limits.
Wall of Force (level 5, evocation). Dheskar creates a wall of force that blocks physical and magical passage.
Teleport (level 7, conjuration). Dheskar teleports himself and willing creatures to a destination he knows on the same plane.
Disintegrating Cinder (Custom, based on necromantic life-draining magic) (level 6, necromancy). Dheskar touches a creature and attempts to drain its life force. The target must make a Constitution saving throw, taking necrotic damage on a failure or half as much on a success.

Each creature in that area must make a Constitution saving throw, taking 36 () fire damage plus 36 () necrotic damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. Spellcasting. Dheskar casts one spell of 3rd level or lower from his prepared spells without expending a spell slot.

Reactions

Ash-Searing Retort (Custom). When a creature Dheskar can see hits him with an attack, he releases a burst of furnace ash. The attacker must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take 10 () fire damage and be unable to take reactions until the start of its next turn.

Background

Before undeath, Dheskar was a celebrated master of the deep foundries, entrusted with the dangerous work of drawing power from Karr-Vazhar’s volcanic heart. He believed that a maker’s knowledge should outlast the maker, and began pursuing a way to bind memory and will beyond death. His peers discovered the experiment and tried to destroy it, leaving him to burn in a magma chamber with his work collapsing around him. The furnace he had built to preserve a mind instead caught his dying soul. He returned changed, with the furnace fused into his chest and every old ambition sharpened into contempt for mortal weakness. Over centuries he gathered the Ash-Crown Coven around his doctrine of transformation through destruction and made the Howling Caldera his seat. He still remembers the foundry hands who helped him, and keeps their names hidden in a private roll. One of them, a former apprentice who escaped the disaster, may yet know how to open the furnace without killing its occupant.

Role in the story

A powerful antagonist whose doctrine turns the Caldera’s ancient dead into both an army and an argument. Dheskar can be confronted as a tyrant, approached as a source of lost foundry knowledge, or challenged through the buried truth of his soul-furnace. His fate may depend on whether the characters destroy the furnace, free the trapped consciousness within it, or offer him a different form of binding.

“He believed that a maker’s knowledge should outlast the maker, and began pursuing a way to bind memory and will beyond death.”
