Voice

A dry, slightly rough voice shaped by cold air, office hours, and years of speaking carefully around painful memories. Consonants land cleanly, as if he is checking each word for a hidden assumption. When he is exhausted, the cold in his breath becomes visible and his voice picks up a faint rasp. Anger makes him more blunt and forceful, not quieter.

He speaks in a measured, work-trained cadence, placing clauses carefully and pausing to revise a claim before he commits to it. Years of business analysis have given him a habit of defining terms; his childhood memories and relearned Swedish make some vowels unexpectedly soft. When the spirit crowds forward, his sentences shorten and fill with directional words: above, behind, downwind, moving.

Speech patterns

Uses precise, conditional phrasing: 'If that is true, then this follows.'
Asks practical questions before emotional ones, especially about dates, routes, and who was present.
When speaking Swedish, he is careful and somewhat formal, as if rebuilding the language one measured phrase at a time.
When the spirit intrudes, his speech can abruptly shift to hunting imagery: height, wind, prey, and the direction of escape.
Avoids describing his death directly and changes the subject if someone asks how he came back.

How to play them

Approach Richard with direct questions and practical offers rather than pity. Respect his privacy about death, but make clear that Aaron and Alexander are worried. Evidence, a reliable lead to his father, or help distinguishing his memories from the spirit's can earn his trust. He reacts badly to being called a monster, but may accept the word Wechuge if it is used without accusation.

Goal

Find his Swedish blood father, hear why he left, and decide for himself whether the meeting ends in reconciliation or revenge.

Motivation

Richard wants agency, a reckoning with his blood family, and enough power to keep the spirit from choosing his future for him. Revenge tempts him because it seems simpler than asking why he was abandoned.

Appearance

Richard has the rangy, unfinished look of a young man who has grown too quickly into winter clothes: long-limbed, shoulders drawn in, and always seeming to measure the distance to the nearest door or window. His pale skin has a faint gray cast when he is tired, and his brown hair lies in rough, static-prone waves beneath a wool cap. His eyes are unmistakably those of a bird of prey: pale yellow, ringed in dark amber, with a slight reflective gleam when light catches them. He turns his head in quick, precise increments rather than letting his gaze wander, as if triangulating every movement in a room. His hands are ink-smudged and callused at the pads from pencil work and firearm practice. Within a minute, most people notice that he repeatedly checks the small brass buttons on his coat, touching each one in sequence as if counting them. Despite his severe winter layers and unsettling stare, he keeps a tiny paper crane folded from a business report tucked in his hatband, a private, unexpectedly childish keepsake.

Clothing

Practical layers for severe winter: a dark wool coat with a high collar, heavy knit sweater, scarf, gloves, durable trousers, and insulated boots. Nothing is fashionable or conspicuous. He keeps a concealed holster when armed and carries a weathered cap with a folded paper crane tucked into its band.

Body language

He stands with his weight slightly forward, as if a startle could turn into a sprint. His eyes make short, birdlike adjustments, and his fingers return to the brass coat buttons in a fixed sequence. When angry, he does not retreat into softness: his jaw sets, his shoulders square, and he becomes startlingly direct.

Distinguishing features

Pale yellow raptor eyes that catch light with a reflective gleam.

Keeps a tiny paper crane folded from a business report tucked into his hatband.

Personality

16 traits and drives

Richard is methodical and self-contained, yet quietly desperate for someone to tell him what his past means. In business he is patient with complicated problems and impatient with sloppy assumptions. Among family he can be protective to the point of possessiveness, then disappear rather than admit he needs them. He wants to meet his father with a clear head, but part of him rehearses the killing. He can be dryly funny when comfortable; when frightened, he becomes precise and almost clinical.

Alignment
Neutral, strained between self-determination and a spirit's predatory demands

Quirks

Touches each brass coat button in order whenever he is waiting for an answer.
Folds scrap paper into tiny cranes while thinking through a difficult problem.
Quietly counts the seconds between lightning and thunder, even indoors when he hears a storm.
Tests the temperature of his breath against his glove when he thinks no one is watching.
When introduced to someone, notices their shoes before their face and remembers where they were standing.

Habits

Counts exits, windows, and nearby people before settling into a room.
When the spirit presses close, he watches moving shadows and rooftops instead of the person speaking.
Keeps a careful, professional manner with clients, but becomes clipped and impatient when someone treats uncertainty as proof.
After a blackout or seizure, he asks what happened in the same flat tone he uses to check a calculation.
In cold weather, he sometimes holds his breath to see whether frost still forms when he exhales.

Traits · 4

He insists on checking the assumptions behind a claim, but accepts supernatural explanations more readily than he admits.
He presents himself as independent, yet tracks his siblings' safety and whereabouts with anxious care.
He can be compassionate toward strangers in immediate danger, then emotionally evasive once they are safe.
He wants revenge on his father, but still hopes the man will explain the years of absence.

Flaws · 4

Treats emotional uncertainty as a problem that can be solved by gathering more data.
Keeps secrets from the people most likely to help him, especially Aaron.
Believes being the eldest means he must take responsibility, even when nobody has asked him to.
Can become fixated on a target and mistake the spirit's appetite for his own purpose.

Fears · 4

That the spirit will kill his blood father while using Richard's body.
That his memories of his father and uncles are partly the eagle's memories, not his own.
That his adoptive siblings will see him as a threat rather than family.
That the Wechuge transformation will make him hungry for violence and unable to choose otherwise.

Wants and needs · 4

To find his blood father and learn why he was left behind.
To keep the eagle spirit from making choices through his body.
To speak honestly with Aaron and Alexander about their shared and separate histories.
To understand whether he can resist the Wechuge transformation without surrendering the power that keeps him alive.

Combat

AC 14 · HP 38 · 30 ft.

Richard prefers distance, cover, and a clear escape route. He opens with Hex or a disabling spell, then uses Eldritch Blast to keep enemies away while his pistol remains a last-resort option. He uses Hunger of Hadar to divide or obstruct a group rather than trapping allies in it. If cornered, the eagle spirit may push him toward an aggressive, reckless pursuit that Richard would not choose.

Custom Wechuge condition. Richard is a living man marked by a predatory spirit and a cold, hungry transformation. This is a campaign-specific interpretation, not a standard D&D 5E species trait.
Pact of the Tome warlock, level 5. His pact magic uses Charisma; spell save and spell attack bonus +7.
Agonizing Blast. Richard adds +4 to each damage roll of his eldritch blast.
Pact of the Eagle's Eyes, custom. Richard sees through the spirit's borrowed golden raptor eyes. He has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks relying on sight in daylight, but the spirit may seize control as described under Take the Wheel.
Take the Wheel, custom. At the DM's discretion, when Richard is startled, near death, or exposed to a strong hunting stimulus, the eagle spirit can attempt to control his body. Richard makes a Charisma saving throw. On a failure, the DM controls him until the end of his next turn; afterward Richard remembers the event in fragmented, uncertain images.
Cold Breath, custom. In freezing weather, Richard's breath crystallizes in the air even when others' does not. This has no combat effect by itself.
Wechuge Hunger, custom narrative drawback: Bloodshed and prolonged exposure to supernatural cold make his transformation harder to resist. It grants no automatic combat bonus.

Spells

Eldritch Blast (cantrip, evocation). Warlock cantrip. Ranged spell attack, to hit, range 120 ft.; deals force damage per beam, with two beams at level 5. Agonizing Blast adds +4 damage to each beam.
Minor Illusion (cantrip, illusion). Warlock cantrip. Richard creates a harmless sensory effect, such as a brief gust, a distant bird call, or a faint chill.
Spare the Dying (cantrip, necromancy). Warlock cantrip. A creature Richard touches regains hit points. Once a creature benefits, it cannot do so again until it finishes a long rest.
Hex (level 1, necromancy). 1st-level spell. Bonus action; Richard curses one creature he can see within 90 feet for up to 1 hour with concentration. He deals an extra necrotic damage whenever he hits it with an attack and gains advantage on ability checks to find it.
Darkness (level 1, evocation). 1st-level spell. Richard creates a 15-foot cube of magical darkness centered on a point within 60 feet. Darkvision cannot see through it; concentration, up to 10 minutes.
Suggestion (level 2, enchantment). 2nd-level spell. Richard magically influences a humanoid he can see within 30 feet; the target makes a Wisdom saving throw. On a failure it is charmed for up to 1 hour, with the spell ending early if Richard or his companions harm it. Concentration.
Hunger of Hadar (level 3, conjuration). 3rd-level spell. Richard opens a 20-foot-radius sphere of unnatural darkness and cold centered on a point within 150 feet. Creatures in the area take cold damage at the start of their turns and must make a Dexterity saving throw or take acid damage. The area is difficult to see through; concentration, up to 1 minute.
Shadow of Moil (level 3, necromancy). 3rd-level spell. Richard wreathes himself in shadow for up to 1 hour with concentration. In dim light or darkness, he can become invisible as a bonus action until he attacks or casts a spell.

Actions

Eldritch Blast. Ranged Spell Attack: to hit, range 120 ft., one or two targets. Hit: force damage per beam. Richard fires two beams at level 5.
Pistol. Ranged Weapon Attack: to hit, range 30/90 ft., one target. Hit: piercing damage. Richard is proficient with firearms; this modern pistol uses the DMG firearm rules, adapted to the campaign's technology.
Staff. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: bludgeoning damage. The walking stick is a practical ashwood staff, not a magical weapon.
Rime-Hunger. Once per turn, when Richard hits a creature with an attack, he can deal an additional necrotic damage to it. This is his custom expression of the spirit's hungry influence, not a standard warlock feature.

Reactions

Raptor's Slip. When a creature Richard can see hits him with an attack, Richard can use his reaction to move up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks. This movement is a custom pact feature and does not reduce the triggering attack's damage.

Background

Richard Jones was born in Delaware to a Swedish father whose face and habits remain vivid in his memory, though his mother's are blurred at the edges. He remembers his father and uncles leaving, and remembers trying to follow them, too young to understand whether they meant to return. The Jones family adopted him; as the oldest sibling, he grew up assuming that duty and inheritance naturally belonged to him, though nobody ever promised him either. Aaron became the sibling he trusted most. Alexander, another younger brother, shares an unspoken history of having come close to death; neither has found a way to ask the other what happened. As a youth, Richard died. The eagle spirit restored him, taking his human blue eyes in exchange for its own raptor sight. He returned with brown hair, yellow eyes, cold breath, and a life that felt borrowed. The spirit's memories overlap his own, and its sudden seizures of his body leave him unsure which deeds are his. He became a mathematical statistics expert for businesses, finding comfort in models that admit their assumptions. Recently, the spirit of war, wind, and lightning within him has stirred him toward a hunt. Richard left the Jones home bitterly and is traveling north to find his blood father, intending to talk even though he suspects the meeting may end in murder. He has relearned Swedish for that conversation. His adoptive family is divided between those who think he may be the natural heir to family responsibilities and those who fear what he is becoming. Alexander searches for him whenever his work allows; Aaron is frightened for him and still hopes he will come home.

Role in the story

A fugitive family member and uneasy ally whose search for his blood father can pull a campaign into northern Europe, supernatural bargains, and questions of chosen versus inherited family. He may become a dangerous antagonist if the eagle spirit's hunt overtakes his own judgment.

“He remembers his father and uncles leaving, and remembers trying to follow them, too young to understand whether they meant to return.”
