Richard Jones
Richard Jones
At the table
Voice
A dry, lightly rasped voice shaped by cold-weather breathing and office work spent explaining complicated results to impatient clients. Richard speaks with measured precision rather than theatrical force. The Eagle's presence changes the rhythm and certainty of his words, not their volume.
His voice has the dry, close-edged rasp of someone accustomed to cold air and long stretches of careful concentration. He clips unnecessary words, lays out facts in orderly sequences, and sometimes pauses mid-sentence as if checking which memory belongs to him. His Swedish is deliberate, relearned through study rather than effortless childhood use. When the spirit presses forward, his diction becomes older and more declarative, as though he is reporting from a height above the listener.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Approach him with direct, practical questions and give him time to answer. He responds better to a clear plan than to forced sympathy. Mentioning Aaron or Alexander can break through his guarded manner, but using either as leverage will make him cold and distrustful. If the Eagle spirit manifests, address Richard by name and describe what he is doing in concrete terms to help him reclaim control.
Goal
Find his Swedish blood kin, confront his father, and decide whether the revenge he has been promised is truly his to carry.
Motivation
Richard wants agency: the power to decide what the Eagle spirit does with his body, what his blood family means to him, and whether revenge is worth the price. He is also drawn to the dangerous independence and force the spirit offers.
Appearance
Richard looks like a young man dressed for a winter that followed him indoors: brown hair flattened beneath a wool cap, pale skin with a faint bluish cast at the lips, and keen yellow eyes that catch light like a hawk's. His gaze rarely settles on faces. It tracks exits, hands, reflections, and tiny motions in a room as if he is mapping the air. He moves with spare, abrupt economy, head turning before his shoulders, then going still enough to seem absent. The unexpected detail is his hands: years of statistical work have left his fingertips ink-smudged and faintly callused from constant pencil use, and he reflexively arranges objects into neat columns even in a crisis. He leaves the impression of a careful young professional who has already watched the room die once.
Clothing
A dark insulated parka over a plain wool sweater, practical trousers, thick boots, and fingerless gloves under warmer mittens. His clothes are durable and unshowy, with repaired seams and a small notebook secured inside the coat. He dresses for cold weather even when others have removed their layers.
Body language
His attention moves faster than his body. He angles himself toward windows and open ground, keeps his hands close to his coat, and watches other people's hands more than their faces. When the Eagle spirit presses close, he lifts his chin and holds perfectly still, as though waiting for wind to turn.

Distinguishing features
Personality
16 traits and drivesRichard is disciplined and analytical, yet deeply susceptible to omens he cannot explain. He can be considerate and almost brotherly when someone is frightened, but turns blunt and controlling when he believes time is running out. In ordinary conversation he masks grief with dry practicality; when the spirit is near, he becomes intent, impatient, and strangely sure of himself. He wants independence but longs for the family that gave him a home.
- Alignment
- Chaotic neutral, pulled between personal freedom and the Eagle spirit's demands

Combat
AC 15 · HP 38 · 30 ft.Richard prefers cover, distance, and a clear retreat route. He opens with the pistol if a firearm is available, uses the crossbow when ammunition or noise is a concern, and closes with his longsword only when forced or when the Eagle spirit drives him forward. He saves Cold Breath for enemies who crowd him or block an escape. He is observant and methodical, but the spirit's sudden interventions can turn a measured fight into a frighteningly direct one.

Background
Richard Jones was born in Delaware to a Swedish father and a mother whose face he remembers only in broken impressions. His father and uncles remain vivid in his mind: voices, cold-weather coats, and the sense that he belonged to a family across the sea. As a boy, Richard died. The details are fractured, but the aftermath is plain: an Eagle spirit returned him to life and took his blue human eyes in exchange for its own fierce, yellow sight. Richard's blue eyes now travel with the spirit; the spirit's eyes look out through him. The Jones family adopted him, and their home became a real family rather than a temporary shelter. He is the eldest, and several siblings treat him as a likely heir, a presumption he accepts as a matter of birth order despite no promise ever being made. Aaron, a younger brother and Richard's closest confidant, worries that the hunt is consuming him. Alexander, another younger brother who shares an unspoken history with death, is searching for him whenever his work as a leader allows. Neither brother knows the whole truth. Richard relearned Swedish and now works as a mathematical statistics expert for businesses, finding comfort in patterns that do not change when memories do. Nearing adulthood, he has become preoccupied with blood kin, revenge, and a promised price. The Eagle spirit that restored him is also a spirit of war, wind, and lightning, and it sometimes takes his body without warning. Richard cannot always tell which memories or choices were his. A trail of unnatural cold, electrical interference, and accounts of a Wechuge-like predator has drawn him north toward Northern Europe and his father. He wants to talk to the man, but suspects the meeting may end in murder. He carries a pistol when he can, and plans to obtain one if he reaches the region without it.
Role in the story
A driven, uneasy ally or rival whose search for his blood father intersects with a Wechuge threat. Richard can offer modern analytical expertise and dangerous supernatural perception, while his unstable pact creates tension over who is making his choices.
