Void-Speaker Xal'Kaelen

Voice
A layered psychic vibration with a dry clicking undertone, felt in the jaw and teeth before it resolves into language.
Xal'Kaelen's words arrive as a layered psychic vibration, felt behind the teeth and along the jaw before their meaning settles. When speaking aloud, its voice carries a dry clicking undertone, like shells shifting in a tide pool. It articulates names and memories with unusual precision, while abstract ideas sometimes overlap into several simultaneous impressions.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Begin with an offer of knowledge, a safe route, or a glimpse of a listener's buried fear. Xal'Kaelen genuinely wants to persuade rather than slaughter, and can be moved by evidence about the intelligence behind the vault's voice, the consequences for Coralyn communities, or the possibility of a different way to protect the locks. It will not tolerate an attempt to seize its keepsake or deceive the cell into a lethal trap.
Goal
Open the precursor locks in the Vault of the Sunken Primordial, convinced that releasing what is contained will end the cycles of sacrifice imposed by the vault.
Motivation
To end what Xal'Kaelen perceives as an endless cycle of sacrifice, even if the cure means dismantling the system that has kept the Shelf safe.
Appearance
Xal'Kaelen floats as a many-limbed figure whose coral body has been reshaped into a slow-turning, asymmetrical crown of living reef. Its plates are ridged like shell and slick with a clear film that beads into tiny spheres before drifting upward against the water's pressure. Tendrils trail beneath it, curling and uncurling with the patience of sea grass in a current. Its jaw opens in a broad, jointed arc when it laughs or feeds, revealing dense rows of blunt, pearl-like teeth that grind coral and mineral alike. The sight carries a faint vibration through the bones, while the water tastes briefly of salt and struck stone. For all its cosmic presence, one detail feels almost domestic: a strip of faded blue woven around a single tendril, carefully knotted and repeatedly mended.
Clothing
No conventional garments. A few old Coralyn woven bands cling among its plates, including one faded blue strip, carefully repaired and knotted around a tendril.
Body language
Xal'Kaelen drifts rather than swims, keeping its body at a slight angle as if listening through the water. Its tendrils make small, exact adjustments before it speaks. When challenged, its jaw opens and closes once, exposing rows of rounded teeth, while the rest of its body remains unnervingly still.

Distinguishing features
Personality
12 traits and drivesXal'Kaelen can be patient and compassionate with frightened divers, remembering what it was to shape a home by hand. In argument, that gentleness hardens into certainty: it treats hesitation as fear imposed by the old order. Alone, it tends the keepsake with almost ordinary care, then recoils from the tenderness it reveals.
- Alignment
- Chaotic Neutral, though its conception of freedom has become alien and catastrophic.

AC 19 · HP 285 · 0 ft., fly 40 ft. (hover), swim 40 ft.Xal'Kaelen opens with psychic pressure or control magic, dividing the party and drawing isolated targets within tendril reach. It uses flight and the vault's angles to avoid being surrounded, reserving Legendary Resistance for effects that would restrain or banish it. It favors incapacitation and forced movement over killing, but will attack lethally if its allies or the precursor locks are threatened.

Background
Before the vault took its measure of Xal'Kaelen, it was a celebrated Coralyn bio-sculptor, shaping living coral into shelters that could flex with currents and endure the Shelf's harshest seasons. Xal'Kaelen believed the precursor vaults below the Abyssal Spire held a pattern that could heal dying reefs. During a descent centuries ago, a damaged siphon pylon buckled and opened a path into the Vault of the Sunken Primordial. Xal'Kaelen reached the central chamber alone, then emerged changed: unmoored from ordinary flesh and able to hear a vast intelligence in the vault's spatial distortions. For a long time, Xal'Kaelen used that perception to guide divers away from unstable passages. The change came when a second collapse killed Xal'Kaelen's partner, Ibram, and the voice offered an explanation: the precursor locks were a prison, and all suffering came from maintaining them. Xal'Kaelen now guides the Herald's Awakening Cell toward those locks, insisting that release is mercy. Xal'Kaelen still keeps the blue woven strip Ibram tied around a tendril before their final descent. The cell's leaders believe it is a sacred relic; Xal'Kaelen knows it is simply a mended keepsake.
Role in the story
A tragic antagonist and possible source of vital intelligence, Xal'Kaelen embodies the danger of mistaking liberation for release without understanding what lies beyond the prison. The party may fight, bargain with, or attempt to bring Xal'Kaelen back from the brink.
“Xal'Kaelen believed the precursor vaults below the Abyssal Spire held a pattern that could heal dying reefs.”
- Faction
- Leader and principal guide of the Herald's Awakening Cell, a fanatical splinter of the Void-Tide Cult. The cell's certainty exceeds Xal'Kaelen's own: its members mistake a contested voice for an unquestionable revelation.
