Master Artificer Maren Vance
Species
Rock Gnome
Appearance
Maren is a compact rock gnome with a weathered, clever face and the deceptively sturdy posture of someone accustomed to standing beside industrial machinery for twelve-hour shifts. Silver threads cut through her dark hair, which is pulled into a practical, ink-stained bun secured with a copper gearpin. Her steel-gray eyes are sharp behind wire-rimmed spectacles, and the lenses occasionally display tiny scrolling lines of diagnostic script. Her hands are small, scarred, and permanently darkened around the fingernails by memory-reactive ink. She moves with quick, economical steps, often stopping so abruptly that her coat continues to sway around her. The unexpected contradiction is that she smells faintly of lavender soap and warm bread, despite spending most of her life in the soot-choked Smoldering Vaults.
“Her voice is low, brisk, and lightly rasped by furnace smoke. She speaks in concise technical phrases, rarely wastes a word, and uses deadpan humor as both shield and scalpel.”

Distinguishing Features
A narrow burn scar runs from her left temple to the corner of her mouth, where a memory condenser ruptured during the Quiet Inventory.
Her spectacles have one ordinary lens and one lens made from translucent blue memory glass.
She wears a copper gearpin shaped like an open eye, the symbol of the Lantern Assembly.
Her left thumb bears a tiny serial number, burned into the skin during her apprenticeship.
When exposed to strong enchantment, faint ghost-images of other people's faces appear across her coat lining.
Voice
“A low, brisk, smoke-roughened voice with a dry humor that becomes unexpectedly gentle around Gearforged.”
Clothing
A heavy utilitarian canvas coat, patched at the elbows and lined with secret velvet pouches containing delicate data-crystals and blank memory-core fragments. Beneath it she wears a charcoal work vest, reinforced trousers, thick leather boots, a tool harness, and a scarf embroidered with nearly invisible circuit patterns.
Body Language
Maren leans forward when someone speaks sincerely and leans back whenever authority is invoked. Her fingers constantly test the edges of nearby objects for hidden seams. In anger, she becomes almost perfectly still, with only one thumb tapping a silent five-beat rhythm against her wrist.
