Vernon
Vernon
At the table
Voice
His voice carries the dry, open-air rasp of someone accustomed to speaking over wind and campfire crackle. It is straightforward and easy to hear, with a trace of breathiness after a long climb. His speech picks up the rhythm of whichever colony he has recently traveled through, but the underlying sound remains his own: direct, youthful, and more comfortable naming a trail than naming a feeling.
Friendly and plainspoken, with the clipped practicality of someone used to calling across a distance or speaking while walking. His vowels and idioms shift subtly with the colony whose people he has most recently been around. When discussing hunting, he becomes exact about tracks, wind, and range; when the subject turns to family, his answers grow abrupt rather than soft.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Meet him outdoors or give him a practical task to do alongside you. He responds to honest competence, fair contests, and kindness to ordinary people. Do not press him to name his true feelings or settle his parentage rumors in public; offer privacy and let him choose whether to speak.
Goal
Prove that he belongs to the colonies through what he does, not through the identity of his unknown father, while finding a way to keep the people he cares about safe.
Motivation
A need to make himself undeniable: as a skilled hunter, a useful protector, and a son worthy of Arthur, regardless of whose blood he carries.
Appearance
Vernon has a relaxed, rugged handsomeness that he seems unaware of, and a posture too loose to pass for a courtier. His sun-browned skin carries the dry, wind-polished look of someone outdoors for hours; come winter, he pales markedly. He walks with a long, springy stride, favoring his left side slightly from habit rather than injury, and goes almost motionless when studying a trail. His suede coat smells unmistakably of woodsmoke, crushed pine needles, and the sharp oil he rubs into his bow; he notices the oil, but not the rest. The unexpected detail: he keeps a tiny, carefully folded scrap of fine French lace tucked in his rough hunting kit, though he claims to dislike European finery.
Clothing
A worn suede coat over a plain cotton shirt, practical breeches, sturdy boots, and a simple belt. He keeps his hair clipped short enough to stay out of his eyes and refuses stiff European clothes, calling them a nuisance in the woods.
Body language
He stands with his weight loose and forward, as if ready to walk out or follow a track at any moment. In unfamiliar company, he leaves an arm’s length of space and keeps his bow-side shoulder angled away. When he feels safe, he sprawls, grins easily, and forgets his unusual strength, sometimes snapping a twig or denting a cup.

Personality
15 traits and drivesVernon is generous with food, directions, and effort, but guarded with affection. He can be loud and sociable in a European drawing room while keeping his body angled toward the nearest exit. Among people he trusts, he is teasing and curious; when embarrassed or hurt, he turns brisk and factual. His deep religious devotion sits uneasily beside his impatience with rules and his readiness to meet force with force.

Background
Vernon was born among the thirteen colonies, one of the rare place-born who grew to his apparent age with startling speed. Arthur, a place-born who calls himself England, gave him his only name and raised him as his son. Rumors argue over whether Berwald, Nils, or Allister might be his blood father; less welcome gossip points to Rhys, Reilly, or even Lalli. Vernon says blood is beside the point, but the uncertainty quietly sharpens his hunger to prove he belongs. He remembers his mother, though he rarely explains what those memories contain. As a child he knew a stretch of peaceful life he misses and will not discuss when others tease him about it. Hunting became his refuge and his reputation: he is a remarkable shot, a capable woodsman, and an eager competitor who likes to wager on skill. Arthur sent him to Europe to learn courtly manners and ordered him to socialize with Ludwig. Vernon makes an effort, but keeps a conspicuous distance from Europeans and most other place-born, with exceptions among people whose traditions draw his curiosity. He has found an unexpected ease listening to Native American stories of thunderbirds and horned serpents, though he knows little enough to be wary of pretending otherwise. His present trouble is that the colonies' competing expectations keep pulling him in different directions, while Arthur dismisses the subtle changes in Vernon’s manner as ordinary place-born nature.
Role in the story
A young colonial hunter caught between family expectations and a fiercely independent sense of belonging. He can guide the party through wilderness, offer a grounded perspective on colonial rivalries, and become a companion whose confidence is tested by the supernatural.
“Arthur, a place-born who calls himself England, gave him his only name and raised him as his son.”
- Faction
- No formal faction. He identifies most strongly with the thirteen colonies and is loyal to their people, but resists being claimed by any single colony.
