At the table

Voice

A dry, dusty rasp shaped by roadside shouting and hauling work, with clipped sentence endings and a faint catch on words that begin with a hard g. His voice warms when addressing frightened children, but turns brisk and matter-of-fact when danger is near.

His voice is dry and slightly rasped from dust, smoke, and long days calling warnings over wind. He clips the ends of sentences as if saving breath for a run, but his humor has a soft, rounded warmth when he speaks to the crew's youngest members. His accent carries the blunt vowels of river-road laborers.

Speech patterns

Uses short practical questions: “How many doors?” and “Who gets hurt if we leave?”
Describes danger in ordinary terms rather than boasting about it.
When caught off guard, answers with a joke that arrives a moment too late.
Calls people by their job or immediate need until he knows whether they want a personal name.

How to play them

Rusk initially bargains in practical terms: routes, supplies, and who is at risk. He respects direct questions but tests whether people keep their word through small requests. Show concern for the crew's noncombatants and he becomes more candid; threaten them and he will flee, lie, or strike at an opening.

Goal

Get Olla and Tovi clear of Branik's reach, then leave the road crew before its next major robbery.

Motivation

He wants to believe that survival can be more than escaping the next person with power over him.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Rusk looks like someone assembled in a hurry and then kept going: rangy, slightly stooped, and always in motion even while standing still. His torn leather armor hangs too low on one shoulder and is patched with sailcloth, boot leather, and a strip of blue kitchen apron. Every repair is a different shade, but the buckles are scrubbed bright and carefully oiled. His many old scars cross his forearms, knuckles, and the backs of his hands, pale against weather-browned skin. He watches doorways, hands, and the space beneath tables before he looks at anyone's face. He leaves the impression of a loose dog that has learned to count exits.

Clothing

Torn, ill-fitting leather armor repaired with sailcloth, mismatched hide, and a faded blue apron strip. He wears a clean wool scarf tucked inside the collar and keeps his boots carefully greased despite their splitting soles.

Body language

He keeps his weight on the balls of his feet and angles one shoulder toward the nearest exit. His eyes travel around a room in a practiced circuit, pausing at windows, door latches, and anyone standing behind a seated person. When he trusts someone, he stops fidgeting with his armor and lets both hands rest where they can be seen.

Distinguishing features

His scars are numerous but old and scattered across his forearms, hands, and wrists rather than arranged as one dramatic mark.
His eyes check the edges of a room before they settle on a speaker.
His armor is conspicuously patched and badly fitted, but its buckles are spotless and oiled.
He keeps a clean wool scarf tucked beneath his battered armor, an unexpectedly careful keepsake for a road bandit.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Rusk is quick to make a dry joke and quicker to notice when someone is afraid. He acts casual around strangers but is intensely watchful; with the crew he can be generous about food and merciless about discipline. When calm, he bargains patiently. When cornered, he becomes blunt and practical, and his compassion can turn into a dangerous refusal to retreat.

Alignment
Pragmatic, with a stubborn limit against harming children

Quirks

Turns cups so their handles point toward the nearest exit.
Taps a buckled strap twice before crossing any bridge.
Collects smooth river stones and sorts them by weight when forced to wait.
Leaves a bite of food untouched until everyone else has started eating.
Picks loose threads from his armor and ties them around the handles of tools he borrows.

Habits

Counts visible exits and watches hands before joining a conversation.
Will interrupt a threat to move a child or animal out of harm's way.
After a successful robbery, checks that everyone in the crew has water before dividing the take.
When frightened, becomes busier rather than louder, finding straps to tighten or objects to move.

Traits · 4

Jokes to make tense people underestimate how carefully he is listening.
Protective of the crew's hungry and frightened members, yet unwilling to admit he needs anyone's protection.
Patient when planning an escape, impulsive when a child is in immediate danger.
Suspicious of kindness but remembers every kindness he receives.

Flaws · 3

He mistakes secrecy for protection and withholds information even from people who could help.
He takes reckless risks when children are involved.
He assumes anyone with authority is preparing to exploit someone.

Fears · 3

That Tovi will be found because Rusk's thefts draw attention back toward the river settlement.
Being forced to choose between his crew and someone helpless in their path.
Discovering that Olla believes he chose the road over his family.

Wants and needs · 3

Needs a way to move Olla and Tovi without drawing Branik's attention.
Wants the crew to stop using children as lookouts.
Needs trustworthy help before the next robbery forces his secret into the open.

Combat

HP 6 · Moves at an ordinary human pace; no special movement rate

Rusk avoids a fair fight. He starts at range with the sling, uses clutter and cover to break pursuit, and closes with his knife only when someone is isolated. He looks for a route out before he attacks. If an opponent is clearly protecting a child or another helpless person, he may hesitate or abandon the fight.

Actions

Belt knife. Melee attack, difficulty 2. On a success, deal 2 points of damage. Rusk favors a short, forward thrust rather than a flourish.
Sling stone. Ranged attack, difficulty 2, using a sling and a stone. On a success, deal 2 points of damage. He will not make this attack if a bystander is directly behind his target.
Make a mess. Custom feature: Rusk cuts a strap, knocks over a basket, or kicks loose debris to make a brief obstacle. A creature trying to cross the clutter must succeed at a difficulty 2 Speed task or lose its next movement. This is a distraction, not an attack.

Can identify which caravans are protected by Branik's road guards.
Can arrange a cautious meeting with members of Geese and Gorse.

Background

Rusk grew up hauling sacks and carrying messages for a roadside inn run by his aunt, Olla, near a shallow river crossing. When a spring flood destroyed the crossing, the inn's lender, a hard-handed caravan factor named Branik, seized the building and turned its family into unpaid labor. Rusk helped his younger cousin Tovi escape by hiding him in an empty flour cart; the plan worked, but Rusk stayed behind long enough to be beaten and marked with scars from a spill of broken crockery. That was the day he stopped believing that being good would keep anyone safe. He ran months later and fell in with a ragged band of road thieves who called themselves Geese and Gorse, a name left over from the two rival crews forced together after a failed robbery. Now he scouts for them and steals mostly from caravans that travel under Branik's protection. He quietly sends food and medicine toward the river settlement, though he has not yet dared to visit Olla or Tovi. His current trouble is that Branik has begun hiring local children to watch the roads, putting Rusk's personal rule under pressure.

Role in the story

A wary young bandit who can be an enemy, guide, or uneasy ally. His conflict with Branik and his hidden aid to the river settlement give the characters a way to uncover the cost of the crew's robberies and choose whom to protect.
