At the table

“That story won”
From how they speak

Voice

A dry, chest-led speaking voice with a faint rasp from dust and cold mornings. His breath is audible when he is rattled, catching in short pulls before the words come. He speaks steadily while handling animals, as if keeping pace with their breathing.

His words are clipped and road-practical, with occasional turns of phrase borrowed from stablehands and prisoners. He tends to describe problems as things that can slip, snag, or break. When unsettled, his breath catches audibly through his nose and his sentences become overprecise.

Speech patterns

Uses practical questions to show concern: "You had water? Your wrists still warm?"
Answers accusations with careful fragments and corrections of detail, often avoiding the central question.
Uses road and animal expressions, such as "That story won't hold the trace" or "Don't startle a tired team."
When relieved, he allows a dry joke to escape, then looks faintly surprised that he said it.

How to play them

Treat Dorran as observant and guarded rather than openly hostile. Practical kindness earns more trust than grand promises. He will deny involvement while he believes the prisoners are at risk, but he can be persuaded to cooperate if given a credible plan that protects them and the families receiving the casks.

Goal

Keep the prisoners from being punished, maintain access to the transport route, and find a safer way to get food to Sootfall.

Motivation

He believes that a small act of mercy matters most when it is made practical and repeatable.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Dorran has the compact, forward-leaning posture of someone who has spent decades bracing against a wagon's jolts. His broad palms are ridged with rope-calluses, the nails permanently darkened by grease and axle dust; he rubs the side of his thumb against his forefinger when deciding whether to trust someone. His hair lies in a coarse, ash-brown cap, usually flattened by a battered wool hat, and his close-trimmed beard catches bits of chaff. He walks with a rolling heel-to-toe gait, as if feeling for ruts through the ground. Unexpectedly, he keeps a tiny wooden whistle tucked behind one ear and uses it to coax birds from the wagon yard, a tender habit at odds with his grim occupation.

Clothing

A smoke-gray wool coat patched at the elbows, a faded rust-colored scarf, oil-dark trousers, and boots with thick soles. His belt carries a grease rag, a short cudgel, and a ring of wagon keys.

Body language

He keeps his shoulders angled toward the wagon and his feet planted as though a sudden lurch is always possible. When he lies, his thumb works the seam of his glove and his eyes travel to the harness rather than the listener. A real threat makes him stop fidgeting entirely.

Distinguishing features

His palms are heavily ridged by reins and rope, with permanent dark grease in the creases.
He carries a small wooden bird whistle behind one ear and uses it in the wagon yard.
He has a practiced, rolling gait that seems to anticipate unseen ruts.
When rattled, his breath catches in short, audible pulls through his nose before he can speak.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Dorran is cautious enough to seem cold and compassionate enough to risk his livelihood for strangers. With officials he is clipped, exact, and difficult to pin down; with prisoners he becomes attentive without becoming familiar. On a quiet road he can be unexpectedly funny, but fear makes him procedural and silence makes him look guiltier than he is.

Alignment
Neutral good, though his caution can look like evasiveness.

Quirks

Taps each wagon wheel twice with the heel of his hand before departure.
Names draft animals after weather, but refuses to explain the names.
Keeps the wooden bird whistle behind his ear and gives it one soft puff whenever a bird lands nearby.
Moves cups and tools so their handles point toward whoever will need them next.
When thinking through a lie, traces an invisible road on his thigh with one finger.

Habits

Counts the team, wheels, and people around him before setting off, even when he is trying to look relaxed.
Checks on prisoners through practical questions about thirst, restraints, and cold rather than offering sympathy outright.
When a superior enters, he becomes brisk and literal; when speaking with a frightened person, his hands slow and his attention sharpens.
In private, he repairs small broken things that are not his, then leaves them where their owners will find them.

Traits · 4

Practical in public, sentimental in private.
Suspicious of authority but respectful toward people who do difficult work well.
Prefers useful kindness to comforting words.
Can endure hardship calmly, but panics when another person is blamed for his choices.

Flaws · 3

He assumes silence is safer than trusting people who might help him.
He can become stubbornly evasive even when a straightforward truth would prevent harm.
He takes responsibility for other people's choices until exhaustion makes him careless.

Fears · 3

That the prisoners will be punished for the diverted shipment.
That one of the hungry families will be used as leverage against him.
Being forced to choose between saving a person and keeping the wagon team safe.

Wants and needs · 3

Wants the diverted casks to reach the families without exposing the prisoners.
Needs the quartermaster to stop comparing the wagon's route records.
Wants someone to tell him that accepting help is not the same as betraying the people he protects.

Combat

AC 11 · HP 9 · 30 ft.

Dorran is not a trained soldier. He prioritizes getting people out of danger, uses the wagon and animals as cover, and tries to break contact rather than win a fight. He will use his cudgel only to create an opening, and he will not knowingly endanger a prisoner or draft animal.

Common
Prison-wagon driver trained to handle frightened draft animals and keep a crowded vehicle steady on rough roads.
Knows the old service tracks and drainage cuts around the region from years of hauling prisoners.
Custom feature. Quiet Brake. When Dorran has a moment to prepare, he can bring his wagon to a halt with little noise by easing the brake and guiding the team onto soft ground.

Actions

Cudgel. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 3 () bludgeoning damage.
Light Crossbow. Ranged Weapon Attack: to hit, range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 3 () piercing damage. Dorran carries only a few bolts and dislikes using the weapon.
Drive the Team. Dorran snaps the reins and urges his team to move. A harnessed draft animal can move up to its speed; this does not grant the animal an additional action.

Reactions

Take the Blow. When a creature within 5 feet of Dorran is struck by an attack, he can use his reaction to pull that creature behind the wagon or his own body if there is room. Dorran becomes the target of the triggering attack instead. He cannot use this reaction if he is incapacitated.

Services they sell

Can drive the party or a small cargo to a nearby settlement.
Can repair a simple wagon or harness problem.
Can provide practical information about prison transport schedules and roads.

Rewards they can give

A hand-drawn route map marking a sheltered track and a reliable water stop.
Dorran's candid account of the transport schedule if he believes the prisoners will be protected.
A wagon repair or discreet ride to the next settlement.

  • Road-repair kit (tool)A grease rag, axle pin, and small tin of tallow for routine repairs.

Possessions

A grease-darkened set of wagon keys
A tiny wooden bird whistle
A folded route map marked with safe water stops
A spare apple wrapped in cloth
A narrow, unsigned note from Iivana

Background

Dorran learned roads before he learned letters, riding beside his mother on a prison wagon that carried debtors between market towns. When a winter bridge gave way beneath the convoy, he heard the prisoners calling from the half-submerged wagon while guards argued over whose duty it was to cut the harness. He freed them with a broken trace-knife and watched one of them, an old cooper named Iivana, go back into the water to pull a guard to safety. That night changed his idea of who deserved saving. Years later, he took the driver's post himself, believing that a man at the reins could make small mercies possible. His current route carries prisoners whose work earned them casks of cider as payment. He arranged for those casks to be diverted to hungry families in the hamlet of Sootfall, then falsified the wagon's timing so the prisoners would not be blamed. He remains in contact with Iivana, now a cooper with a bad knee, and with Sootfall's watchful midwife, Seija, who coordinates the quiet distribution. His immediate problem is that a quartermaster has noticed mismatched axle marks and is asking why the wagon arrived lighter than its manifest claims.

Role in the story

A witness and prison-wagon driver in the quest "The Missing Casks." Dorran knows how the shipment was diverted, but hides his own role to keep the prisoners who donated it from facing punishment. His testimony can expose the route of the casks, protect innocent prisoners, or implicate him if the party mishandles the investigation.
