Anja of the Alps
Anja of the Alps
At the table
Voice
Her voice has the dry, faintly rough edge of someone who has spoken for hours in cold air, with a breath that catches audibly when she is frightened. The valley accent gives her English an unfamiliar lilt, while her phrasing remains unmistakably American. When rattled, she takes one sharp breath and begins choosing words with even greater precision.
She speaks in a local valley accent she never learned, with American turns of phrase surfacing when she is tired or startled. Her sentences are carefully shaped, but she does not sound formal for its own sake. She often repeats another person's words in plainer language before answering, and when angered she becomes more direct rather than quieter.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Treat Anja as a capable person, not a novelty or a substitute counselor. She responds well to direct questions, practical offers, and people who reciprocate her attention. If she has been listening for too long, ask what she needs and give her room to answer without immediately turning the conversation back to the group.
Goal
Find the truth about how she arrived in the Alpine lands, while building a life here that does not reduce her to the party's listener and caretaker.
Motivation
To make the people around her safer without surrendering her own grief, and to discover whether this place has a claim on her that she never agreed to.
Appearance
Strikingly beautiful in the startling, unvarnished way of a face from an old mountain tale: wind-bright cheeks, a clean brow, and an intent expression that makes people feel she has heard the part they did not say. Her new look evokes a young Alpine heroine, though she has no clear sign of inherited magic or other heritage. She stands with the compact balance of someone learning to trust unfamiliar ground. When rattled, she takes a small, audible catch of breath, then presses her thumb to the seam of her sleeve as if checking that the world is still stitched together. The accent in her voice belongs to the valley, though she never learned it.
Clothing
Her original American clothes came with her: a worn dark jacket, a plain shirt, sturdy trousers, and practical shoes, now repaired with coarse local wool and mismatched thread. She keeps a borrowed alpine scarf close at hand and dislikes wearing anything that restricts her breathing.
Body language
She gives people her full attention, often turning her whole body toward whoever is speaking. Her thumb worries at the cuff seam of her sleeve when she is uncertain. When she is angry, her breathing becomes clipped and audible, and she stops fidgeting altogether.

Personality
14 traits and drivesPatient and observant, but not endlessly accommodating. She gives frightened people time to find their words, yet becomes stubborn when someone mistakes her care for permission to decide for her. She dislikes grand speeches, though she will speak plainly and fiercely when a companion is being treated as disposable.

Combat
AC 10 · HP 4 · 30 feetAnja avoids fair fights. She stays near cover and the party's strongest defender, calls out immediate hazards, and uses her voice to help an ally take advantage of an opening. If cornered, she shoves to make space and retreats. Her statistics are a custom, non-canonical level 0 profile; she is not a trained combatant.

Background
Anja remembers being an American lawyer, trained to read closely, build arguments, and notice which question a witness avoided. She remembers the life she had, but not a journey that could explain how she came to the Alps. She woke on a cold slope above a valley, carrying her old clothes and belongings, with a local accent already waiting in her mouth. The first people to find her were the displaced members of the Seven Who Heard the Snow. At first she treated every conversation as a deposition and every promise as something to test. That changed after a storm trapped the group in a collapsed shepherd's hut. With food running low, she stopped arguing over who had caused the disaster and organized them into shifts, keeping everyone talking until the snow eased. They survived, and she learned that being heard can matter more than winning. Now she is the group's best listener and its only woman, a role she did not choose and cannot set down easily. She tries to rebuild the easy, familiar friendships she remembers from home, while the party's dependence on her keeps making her the mediator, interpreter, and emotional first aid. Her old American clothes are mended with local wool, and her former legal documents are useless here except as reminders. She is currently trying to find out why the valley recognizes her voice, and whether her lack of visible heritage means she has none or that it has yet to awaken.
Role in the story
A displaced member of the party whose strongest contribution is not damage or authority but the ability to help people tell the truth. Anja can reveal inconsistencies in a mystery, mediate a fragile alliance, and remind the party that mutual aid must include her needs too.
