Mieszko
Mieszko
At the table
Voice
His voice is newly deep and still seems to surprise him when it resonates in a small room. It has a slightly rough edge from cold air, hard travel, and too little sleep, with Polish consonants giving his practical explanations a crisp, clipped rhythm. He does not perform confidence; when he makes a promise, he places weight on the final words.
Mieszko speaks plainly and tends to explain a problem by describing what bears weight, what is under strain, and where it may fail. His Polish slips into his counting and muttered thoughts. He uses careful, practical words when discussing danger, but circles around personal subjects with pauses and abrupt changes of topic. When he is comfortable, a dry, understated humor appears.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Meet Mieszko through a concrete problem: a weak bridge, an unsafe roof, or a route through difficult ground. He responds well to competence and direct questions, but dislikes being handled gently or treated as fragile. Respect his choices about his body and identity. If he overprotects the sole woman in the group, challenge the behavior without dismissing the care underneath it.
Goal
Keep the Seven alive long enough to find a stable settlement, while learning how to be close to his friend without treating her as someone he must manage.
Motivation
Mieszko wants his technical skill and new strength to mean something beyond survival. He wants the Seven to have a safe place to sleep, and wants to recover closeness with his friend without pretending that nothing has changed.
Appearance
Mieszko has the handsome, broad-shouldered look of a figure lifted from a village legend: a straight nose, strong jaw, and an unstudied, open face that becomes guarded when he notices someone staring. He is taller and more powerfully built than the body he remembers, with dark hair that curls at his temples and a rough shadow along his jaw by evening. His gaze keeps measuring doorways, roof beams, slopes, and the distance between people, as if every room were a structure that might fail. His wool coat hangs a little short at the wrists and has been carefully let out at the shoulders; one brass button is polished far brighter than the others. He walks with an engineer's economy, placing each boot as though testing a bridge plank. The unexpected detail is a tiny bundle of dried meadow flowers tucked into his belt, replenished whenever he finds them and never explained.
Clothing
A weather-worn wool coat altered to fit his unfamiliar shoulders, a patched shirt, sturdy trousers, and boots repaired with mismatched leather. He keeps the coat's brass button painstakingly polished and carries dried meadow flowers at his belt.
Body language
He stands as if unconsciously taking the weight of a structure: feet planted, shoulders squared, attention on whoever seems least steady. When uneasy, he rubs the polished brass button on his coat or flexes his hands, then catches himself doing it. Around the sole woman in the group, he often shifts to put himself between her and a perceived threat, even when she has not asked him to.

Distinguishing features
Personality
16 traits and drivesQuietly stubborn and more considerate than his guarded manner suggests, Mieszko can be patient with a damaged beam and impatient with someone who insists he cannot manage. He is steady when others panic, yet privately unsettled by his changed body and by the forest's attention. Around the group he shows care through useful acts; with the sole woman he can become intensely protective, then withdraw when he realizes he has crowded her. When safe and rested, he is dryly funny and unexpectedly gentle with small living things. When tired, hungry, or afraid, his temper arrives faster than he expects, and he hates being treated as fragile even when he is the one who needs help.

Combat
AC 13 · HP 11 · 30 feetMieszko protects the group's weakest position, using his maul to discourage enemies and his body to block access to allies. He favors solid ground, cover, and choke points, and will shove a foe away from an injured companion rather than pursue a fleeing enemy. He is capable but inexperienced in formal combat, and may overcommit if the sole woman in the group is threatened.

Background
Before the displacement, Mieszko was a Polish civil engineer who trusted measurements because they made frightening things manageable. He was one of two women in the group that became the Seven at the Crooked Roof, and his friendship with the group's sole woman had the easy, unguarded intimacy of people who could be tired together without explaining themselves. The new world remade his body into that of a young man: taller, stronger, hairier, hungrier, and carrying a voice and temper he had never had to learn to inhabit. He knows himself as a man now, but that certainty did not make the change painless. At a wayhouse, drunk and exhausted, he followed the group's sleeping arrangement and went to bed beside his friend without realizing what had changed. Waking beside her in a body he barely recognized made him retreat behind watchfulness and practical tasks. The moment that changed him most came later, when a rotten footbridge gave way under a pack animal. He could not save the load, but he held the animal's lead while the others hauled it free, and learned that strength could be useful without making him responsible for everything. Now he surveys shelters, marks safe crossings, and tries to keep the Seven alive while struggling with the trees' uncanny attention. He misses the old ease with his friend, is fiercely protective of her, and has not yet learned where care ends and control begins.
Role in the story
A capable survivor and structural problem-solver whose found-family loyalty is both a strength and a source of conflict. His emerging Leshy bloodline offers a mysterious connection to the wilderness, while his changed body and evolving friendship ask the party to make room for uncertainty without reducing him to it.
“He knows himself as a man now, but that certainty did not make the change painless.”
- Faction
- The Seven at the Crooked Roof, a stranded survival band and found family rather than a native institution.
