Latch

Latch
Species
Gearforged
Appearance
Latch is a slender Gearforged built like a folded brass ruler, all narrow joints, overlapping plates, and deliberate angles. Her dented brass faceplate bears a long crescent scar where a freight hook once tore through her brow. One eye is a striking blue glass lens that catches light like deep water, while the other is a dark aperture crowded with tiny focusing petals. Her hands are delicate and blackened at the fingertips from years of handling soot-coated pneumatic lines. She moves with unnerving economy, sliding sideways through crowded passages and stopping with the abrupt finality of a dropped tool. Fine copper filaments show beneath the seams of her neck and wrists, and old oil has darkened the metal around every hinge. Despite her industrial construction, she wears a tiny white silk flower tucked behind one ear, replacing it every seventh day. The effect is unexpectedly tender, almost mournful, against her battered machinery.
“Her voice is low, precise, and gently metallic. Each sentence contains faint clicks from her damaged memory core, especially when she discusses the Exchange, the Ashfall Shutdown, or Gearforged freedom.”

Distinguishing Features
Dented brass faceplate with a crescent scar
One luminous blue glass eye and one segmented black focusing aperture
Soft clicking vocal distortion when her memory core struggles
A white silk flower replaced every seventh day
A red scarf belonging to a worker who died in the Ashfall Shutdown
Voice
“A soft contralto filtered through brass reeds, with a rhythmic click at the end of uncertain statements”
Clothing
A charcoal courier coat reinforced with stitched leather and flexible copper mesh, a slate-gray hood, numbered brass route tags, a red scarf taken from a dead tunnel worker, and a belt of sealed message tubes. The coat is patched with pieces of old freight labels, some bearing routes that officially never existed.
Body Language
Latch keeps her shoulders angled toward the nearest escape route and tilts her blue lens toward whoever is speaking. Her fingers make tiny counting motions against her palm when she is calculating risk. When angry, she becomes almost perfectly still, with only the blue eye narrowing and the memory core clicking in slow, deliberate intervals.
