Barnaby Quill-Tally
Rogue, Mastermind
Barnaby Quill-Tally
Species
Halfling
Appearance
A cheerful halfling with a round, weather-soft face and a perpetually relaxed posture, Barnaby often appears to be leaning against the nearest wall by accident. His hands move with startling precision, however, flicking between seals, quills, keys, and ledger clasps faster than most people can follow. His sleeves are stiff with layers of dried ink, giving them the texture of old bark, while his fingertips are permanently blackened in delicate branching patterns. He smiles as if every crisis is a minor clerical inconvenience, yet his eyes track every person, parcel, and pause in a conversation. The unexpected contradiction is that his clothing and hands look neglected, but his boots are polished to a mirror shine each morning.
“Light, genial, and conversational, with a soft river-district accent. Barnaby speaks quickly when discussing documents and unusually slowly when someone is lying.”

Distinguishing Features
A crescent-shaped ink stain under his left eye that resembles a permanent bruise.
A missing upper-right incisor, replaced by a tiny silver tooth engraved with a number.
Fingertips permanently darkened by ink, with clean white semicircles beneath each fingernail.
A pair of brass spectacles whose left lens is plain glass and whose right lens is smoked black.
He walks with a loose, drifting sway until he decides to move, at which point he becomes nearly silent.
Voice
“A warm, papery tenor with a habitual smile in it, like a kindly clerk explaining that an apocalypse has been filed under the wrong department.”
Clothing
A faded olive clerk's coat with ink-stiffened cuffs, a patched cream waistcoat, brass spectacles on a cord, soft-soled boots polished obsessively, and a broad leather strap securing his heavy double-locked ledger beneath one arm.
Body Language
Barnaby slouches against walls, tables, and machinery as though gravity is an optional administrative policy. His fingers remain busy even while he talks, aligning papers, polishing a seal, or counting unseen beats against his palm. When genuinely frightened, he becomes perfectly still, with both hands flat on his ledger.
