At the table

Voice

A chest-resonant speaking voice with a dry rasp from dust and cold stone air. Thraxis breathes through the nose when calm, quietly measuring each pause; when alarmed, the breath catches high and briefly roughens the first word. Their name alone carries a clear, crisp initial sound before settling into a low, weighty finish.

Thraxis speaks in clipped, practical sentences shaped by years of giving directions over machinery and echoing stone. They often identify sounds before naming what caused them. Their cadence is steady until rattled, when a shallow breath catches high in the chest and their next words come out with sudden, blunt force.

Speech patterns

Uses exact practical directions: 'Three steps, then wait for the pipe to knock twice.'
Asks questions that sound procedural but are really tests of honesty.
Calls people by their office or duty when trying to keep a conversation from becoming personal.
Uses 'I saw' and 'I can prove' carefully, and refuses to repeat rumors as facts.

How to play them

Thraxis offers practical help first, then asks what the party knows and how they intend to use it. They will guide characters who respect the cathedral's workers and agree not to provoke either House without evidence. If pressed about the deposition, they test the party's discretion before revealing what they copied.

Goal

Prove that the accusation was engineered, restore the Dragon Oath's credibility, and prevent the dispute from becoming a House feud.

Motivation

Thraxis wants justice to be something people can trust again, not a weapon that one House uses against another.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Thraxis has a weather-burnished face, a straight-backed carriage, and the compact, balanced stance of someone accustomed to carrying weight through narrow corridors. Their hands are what people notice first: broad-palmed and ridged with pale calluses from years of turning stiff cathedral winches and hauling service doors. The pads of their thumbs are stained faintly blue by the chalk used to mark safe routes. They move with careful economy, placing each boot as if listening through the floor. A small, unexpected detail: a bright yellow thread is tied around one wrist, the sort used to mend children's kites, and Thraxis carefully reties it whenever it loosens.

Clothing

Dull-silver scale shirt beneath a dark, sleeveless surcoat bearing the Dragon Oath's worn emblem. A service-worker's heavy apron is folded over the belt, with chalk, narrow wedges, and a hook knife tucked into its pockets. Their boots are soft-soled to avoid echoing in the passageways.

Body language

Keeps their shoulders square but not puffed, often angling one foot toward the nearest exit. Their hands hover near the belt when a conversation turns threatening. When listening closely, they tilt their head and go almost completely still, as if tracking a sound behind the speaker.

Distinguishing features

Broad, callused hands with blue chalk worked into the creases of the thumbs.
A yellow kite-mending thread tied around one wrist.
A habit of pausing to listen to a room before crossing it.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Thraxis is disciplined about evidence but compassionate toward frightened people, and those instincts frequently conflict. In a crisis they are brisk, decisive, and physically protective. In private they can be unexpectedly wry and patient. When they believe someone is exploiting procedure, their restraint becomes brittle: they stop negotiating and demand plain answers, even when that risks making an enemy.

Alignment
Lawful good, though distrustful of institutions that mistake procedure for justice

Quirks

Taps a doorframe twice with the back of one knuckle before entering, listening for a hollow sound.
Turns any cup so its handle points toward the nearest exit.
Keeps snapped bell clappers and names each one after the sound it made.
When thinking, rubs blue chalk from one thumb onto the edge of a boot, then notices and wipes it off.
Reties the yellow thread on their wrist whenever anyone nearby makes a promise.

Habits

Checks door hinges and floor seams while speaking, especially when anxious.
Counts the people in a room before deciding where to stand.
When angered, breath catches once in the upper chest, then comes out as a blunt, forceful exhale; their words become more direct, not softer.
Will interrupt a formal argument to help someone carry something heavy, then return to the argument as if nothing happened.

Traits · 3

Protective of workers and bystanders, but impatient with people who use rank to avoid responsibility.
Values proof over suspicion, yet trusts their own instincts more than they admit.
Can be dryly funny among friends and sternly formal around powerful strangers.

Flaws · 3

Treats uncertainty as a reason to delay even when delay carries its own danger.
Takes responsibility for other people's safety until they become controlling.
Is too willing to hide evidence temporarily in the name of preventing a larger conflict.

Fears · 3

That a truthful accusation will be used as an excuse for retaliation against innocent people.
That their mentor will decide they have betrayed the Dragon Oath.
Being trapped in a smoke-filled passage with no way to guide others out.

Wants and needs · 3

Needs a discreet way to verify the deposition without exposing the clerk.
Wants the Dragon Oath's justice restored without provoking a House feud.
Wants the cathedral's service workers to be treated as witnesses, not disposable tools.

Combat

AC 16 · HP 27 · 30 ft.

Thraxis prefers to hold a doorway or narrow passage, keeping hostile creatures away from allies and civilians. They use the longsword defensively, strike only when a threat commits, and reserve Measured Smite for a decisive opening. If a fight risks becoming a House feud, Thraxis first tries to disarm, block, or separate opponents rather than pursue a fleeing enemy.

Dragon Oath. Thraxis swore to uphold truth without turning justice into vengeance. This is a custom oath, not a claim about a canonical subclass.
Service-Passage Guide. Thraxis knows the cathedral's maintenance routes, bellows, and concealed service doors, including which ones can be opened quietly.
Measured Smite. Once per turn, after hitting with a melee weapon, Thraxis can expend a reserved oath-charge to deal an extra 4 radiant damage. This is a custom feature.

Actions

Longsword. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 () slashing damage, or 7 () if wielded in two hands.
Light Crossbow. Ranged Weapon Attack: to hit, range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 4 () piercing damage.
Call to Witness. Thraxis presents a small, silver-edged oath token and names the duty they are sworn to protect. A creature that can hear them must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or hesitate, losing its reaction until the start of its next turn. Once used, this custom ability cannot be used again until Thraxis finishes a short rest.

Reactions

Interpose. When a creature Thraxis can see attacks an ally within 5 feet, Thraxis imposes disadvantage on that attack roll by stepping into the line of attack. Thraxis must be wielding a melee weapon.
Hold the Threshold. When a creature within 5 feet tries to move past Thraxis through a narrow passage, Thraxis can make a melee weapon attack against it.

Services they sell

Guides the party through the cathedral's service passages.
Explains staff routes, shift changes, and which doors can be opened without alerting the nave.
Can help interpret maintenance marks and identify places where evidence may have been moved.

Rewards they can give

A safe route through the cathedral's service passages.
A charcoal rubbing of a concealed maintenance mark that can verify the party's route.
Thraxis's testimony that the accusation's timeline does not match the cathedral's records, if the party protects the implicated clerk.

Folded service-passage diagrams marked with chalk symbols
A copied deposition hidden inside the lining of their apron
Yellow kite-mending thread around one wrist

Background

Thraxis was raised among the cathedral's bell-ringers and maintenance crews, where the Silverwing name came from a family tradition of repairing the thin silver vanes that guide smoke out of the sanctuary roof. They entered the Dragon Oath after guiding trapped worshippers through a smoke-choked undercroft during a fire. The experience changed their understanding of courage: the people they remember most were frightened, ordinary workers who kept opening doors for strangers. Years later, an accusation against a Dragon Oath member was quietly shaped to implicate a rival House. Thraxis found signs that the evidence had been altered, but exposing it carelessly could ignite a feud and endanger the cathedral staff who helped them investigate. Their former mentor, Captain Iven, demands strict obedience; their closest confidante, Pell, a night custodian, wants the truth brought into daylight. Thraxis is currently hiding a copied passage from a sealed deposition while trying to find a way to prove the accusation was engineered without making the Houses take sides.

Role in the story

An allied guide through the cathedral's service passages and a cautious source of evidence in the quest 'Inquisition in Draknaar.' Thraxis can help the party avoid public confrontation while investigating how the accusation was engineered.
