Commander Valen Drakespear
Species
Bronze Dragonborn
Appearance
Commander Valen Drakespear is a broad-shouldered bronze dragonborn whose polished copper scales have been dulled by salt, smoke, and countless nights spent beneath storm clouds. Sea-spray has etched pale mineral scars along his jaw, throat, and knuckles, giving his hide the texture of hammered metal left too long on a beach. His golden eyes burn with an almost furnace-like intensity, but his left pupil is split by a thin black scar that makes his stare seem permanently narrowed. He moves with startling economy for a man of his size, pivoting like a seasoned deck fighter rather than marching like a parade officer. His presence smells faintly of wet iron and ozone. The contradictory detail most soldiers remember is his hands: huge, scarred, and capable of crushing a helm, yet remarkably gentle when fastening a child's coat or repairing a fisherman's net.
“His voice is a resonant baritone with a rasp like a ship's chain dragged across stone. He speaks quickly when issuing orders, slowly when naming the dead, and almost whispers when discussing Brinewake.”

Distinguishing Features
A vertical scar cuts through his left golden eye without impairing his vision.
His lower left horn is wrapped in crimson thread taken from the original Eighth Company banner.
The copper scales on his palms are unusually dark and rough from years of gripping wet weapons.
His halberd emits a low thunderclap whenever it strikes stone.
He wears a simple blue fisherman's cord around his wrist, repaired dozens of times.
Voice
“A resonant, storm-worn baritone that can cut through surf, marching drums, and panicked crowds without becoming a shout.”
Clothing
Utilitarian scale mail reinforced with heavy iron pauldrons bearing the faded crimson insignia of the Eighth Company. A battle-scarred leather baldric crosses his chest, supporting a signal whistle, command seals, whetstone, and waterproof map case. His gauntlets are mismatched, one military issue and one made from a melted ship's bell.
Body Language
Valen leans forward when listening, as if bracing against wind. In danger, he becomes unnervingly still before exploding into motion. He points with the butt of his halberd, grips doorframes when angry, and rests two fingers against his sternum whenever someone mentions the dead of Brinewake.
