Appearance
Registrar Silas Kade is a slender human man who seems permanently folded around an invisible desk. His pale face has the waxy translucence of someone who spends too many hours beneath archive lamps, and his nervous dark eyes flick constantly behind wire-rimmed spectacles repaired with red thread. His fingertips are stippled with black, blue, and rust-colored ink, while the skin beneath his nails carries a faint metallic sheen from years of handling clockwork seals. He moves in quick, angular starts, as though each footstep requires written authorization, yet when danger arrives he becomes startlingly fluid, slipping between shelves with the silent grace of a practiced thief. His most contradictory feature is his smile, which is warm, broad, and almost boyish, despite the permanent terror in his eyes. People often remember him less as a frightened clerk than as a candle flame trying very hard not to go out.
“Precise, hurried, and softly formal. Silas often corrects his own wording mid-sentence, then adds a nervous apology.”

Distinguishing Features
Wire-rimmed spectacles repaired with red thread
Ink stains in several colors that never fully wash away
A tiny burn scar shaped like a comma beneath his left ear
A brass registry number tattooed on the inside of his wrist, usually concealed by his glove
A warm, incongruous smile that appears whenever someone offers another person a second chance
Voice
“A thin, warm baritone that rises into a quick flutter when he is frightened. In moments of moral certainty, it settles into a low, remarkably steady register.”
Clothing
A threadbare charcoal wool clerk's tunic with a high collar, brass toggle fasteners, patched elbows, and dozens of cleverly concealed interior pockets. He wears soft-soled archive shoes, a leather belt carrying seal wax and picks, fingerless gloves stained by ink, and a red thread binding one arm of his spectacles.
Body Language
His shoulders remain slightly hunched, and his hands constantly sort, fold, tap, or align nearby objects. When lying, he becomes unnaturally still. When someone speaks the name of a persecuted person, he leans forward with complete attention and stops fidgeting.
