Tavren
Tavren
At the table
Voice
Dry, level, and faintly rasped, with the breath economy of a lifelong practitioner. He speaks in short, grounded phrases shaped by ferry work and decades of guarding a mountain pass. There is no theatrical growl or hush; even his warnings sound like practical facts.
His voice comes from a body trained to spend no breath wastefully: dry and level, with a slight rasp from years of cold-air breathing drills. He clips the ends of practical instructions, but lets a pause stand when the answer matters. His ferry-keeper childhood leaves him using words of water and weight; his years as a guardian make him address people by what they are doing rather than what they claim to be. When he laughs, the sound is a short, startled bark.
Speech patterns
How to play them
He tests visitors with practical questions and small acts of trust rather than riddles: carry water, help a stranger, or admit what you do not know. He responds to patience and honest restraint. Threats made against the Scroll end the conversation; threats made against the vulnerable earn his immediate attention.
Goal
Keep the Scroll from Vask's raiders, preserve its fragile pages, and prepare someone trustworthy to guard it after him.
Motivation
He believes strength is meaningful only when it makes room for another person to choose. He guards the Scroll because its contents belong to the people of Etho, not because he believes every page should remain untouched forever.
Appearance
Tavren looks so spare that his robe seems to hang from a bundle of reeds, yet his balance has the quiet certainty of a stone set deep in a river. His face is long and weather-browned; a thin grey beard divides into three wiry points that twitch when he chews. His broad jaw makes his mouth look almost severe at rest, but when he laughs his small, crowded teeth show in an unexpectedly boyish grin. He walks with a minute favoring of his left heel, then stops so completely that people mistake him for a carved post. The surprise is that he keeps a tiny, bright-red clay spinning top tucked in his sleeve and idly sets it spinning on his knuckles between threats.
Clothing
A smoke-brown wrap robe patched at the elbows with mismatched squares of sailcloth, a faded blue sash, straw sandals, and a weatherproof shoulder cape. He wears no armor. A narrow paper case is tied inside the sash.
Body language
His shoulders slope forward and his hands rest loosely at his sides, giving him the look of a tired caretaker. In danger, the left heel settles, his spine stacks upright, and every unnecessary motion vanishes. He rarely points; he turns his whole body toward whoever deserves his attention.

Personality
12 traits and drivesTavren is patient enough to let a frightened person finish a clumsy explanation, yet mercilessly direct with anyone using that patience to exploit others. He enjoys children's company and has little tolerance for ceremonial authority. In peaceful company he makes room for laughter; when danger approaches, his warmth contracts into exact attention, not rage. He prefers repair to punishment, but once he decides a threat must be stopped, he does not bluff.

AC 20 · HP 170 · 60 ft.Tavren avoids killing when he can end a fight through positioning, disarming, stunning, or forcing a surrender. He begins by measuring the most dangerous opponent and breaking their momentum with Stunning Strike, then uses speed, cover, and patient defense to separate raiders from one another. He spends ki sparingly until the Scroll or an innocent is threatened; then he uses the Dire Wolf chi and accepts no retreat. He does not pursue fleeing enemies beyond the pass.

Background
Tavren was born to a family of ferry keepers on the eastern marches of Etho. As a boy he learned to read current, weight, and hesitation before he learned letters. He entered a mountain discipline after a raiding party burned the ferry settlement; he survived by hiding beneath an overturned boat while his younger sister, Sennu, led the remaining children through a drainage culvert. He spent years mistaking survival for cowardice. A formative turning point came decades later, when a defeated raider captain named Hroth returned to the monastery carrying the bones of a child he had failed to save. Tavren chose to shelter him rather than kill him, and learned that restraint could demand more courage than revenge. The two became uneasy friends, though Hroth died before Tavren could tell him the guilt had been forgiven. Tavren became guardian of the Scroll, a record of treaties, names, and techniques that could unite Etho's fractured valleys or give a conqueror leverage over them. He has held the pass alone through three generations of attempted seizure. He still sends food to Sennu's descendants, though most believe the deliveries come from a nameless benefactor. Now the raider chief Vask has gathered Etho's strongest fighters and is marching on the sanctuary. Tavren knows the pass can be held, but the Scroll's brittle pages may not survive another battle.
Role in the story
A nearly unbeatable guardian whose defense of the Scroll is both a physical obstacle and a moral test. The party can help him confront Vask, uncover the hidden history in the Scroll, and persuade Tavren to entrust its future to others.
