At the table

Voice

A rough, clear voice with a dry edge, shaped by years of shouting over the forge and giving terse instructions on a watch line. His vowels are broad and grounded; when tired, he clips the ends of words as if conserving breath.

He speaks in compact, workmanlike sentences, often describing a problem as a seam, a load, or a weak joint. Years of calling over a hammer and forge roar have left his consonants crisp and slightly rough. He does not raise his voice to sound threatening; he makes each word land like a tool set firmly on a bench.

Speech patterns

Uses concrete work comparisons: 'That plan has a weak seam.'
Asks short, direct questions when people are in danger.
When discussing the past, names practical details rather than describing his feelings.
Uses dry humor to defuse tension, often at his own expense.

How to play them

Jorik responds best to candor and practical proposals. He tests a stranger's judgment by asking what they would do for someone weaker than themselves. He is generous with repairs and local knowledge, but becomes guarded if anyone treats his brother as disposable or speaks casually about sacrificing civilians.

Goal

Keep his family forge open without letting Tekk's debts turn the workshop into a trap, and make sure no one in town is abandoned during the next crisis.

Motivation

He wants to turn protection from a desperate reaction into a dependable part of daily life, but he also wants his brother to be safe without having to control him.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Jorik is broad through the chest but moves with a careful, sidelong economy, as if every doorway were a narrow forge aisle. His skin has the ruddy, uneven sheen of someone often warmed by a furnace; black soot gathers in the creases beside his nose despite frequent washing. His hands are thick and square, their palms densely crosshatched with old calluses, nails permanently dark at the edges. When he laughs, his lower jaw juts forward and shows a conspicuous gap between two blunt front teeth. Unexpectedly for a veteran fighter and smith, he keeps a tiny, neat braid threaded with blue glass beads tucked behind one ear, a keepsake from his late mother.

Clothing

A soot-brown leather apron over a patched charcoal wool shirt, heavy trousers, and iron-toed boots. His old militia coat has been cut down into a practical sleeveless vest, with the faded unit stitching still visible inside.

Body language

He rests his weight on the balls of his feet and keeps his shoulders angled toward doors. When listening, he rubs the side of his thumb against a small burnished patch on his belt buckle. His jaw shifts once before he gives a difficult answer.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Jorik is warm and quietly funny when people are doing honest work, yet becomes rigid and commanding when someone is at risk. He is patient with a novice's mistakes but has little patience for a leader who treats people as expendable. In private, he is sentimental about small objects and evasive about painful memories; in public, he presents himself as the dependable one who needs nothing.

Gives every unfamiliar dog a small, formal nod before greeting its owner.

Habits

Checks the nearest exit and the weakest-looking support beam whenever he enters a building.
Offers practical help before advice, especially to people who are embarrassed to ask.
Keeps working through grief or anger until someone makes him stop.
When a decision could endanger others, he asks who has not yet been heard.

He favors shoves and grapples against enemies who threaten civilians. He uses Action Surge when an ally is in immediate danger or when a decisive opening appears, and retreats only after helping others withdraw.

Background

Jorik was raised at a riverside forge by his mother, a practical smith who repaired plowshares and quietly taught him to read by stamping letters into scrap iron. At nineteen, he joined a town militia after a bridge collapse left a caravan trapped across the river. He helped hold the crossing against raiders until the stranded families escaped, but a panicked officer ordered the bridge burned with several townspeople still on the far bank. Jorik disobeyed, leading a rescue through the water and losing his mother, who had come to help, in the flood. The experience made him fiercely protective of people caught under someone else's command. He later trained as a fighter, served five years as a watch sergeant, and returned to the forge when his younger brother Tekk took on dangerous debts to keep the family workshop open. Now Jorik repairs tools by day and guards caravans by night, while trying to persuade Tekk to leave town before the debt collectors make good on their threats.

Role in the story

A skilled local protector and source of grounded, reliable help. Jorik can become an ally in a conflict with corrupt authorities, but the secrets he carries may force him to choose between justice, his brother's safety, and the families he once saved.
